Do people really think this is the road to the end...?! Surely NOT!

Do you honestly think we’re on the road to the end of all this...?!

Here’s how I see things...

New variants will emerge - back into lockdown
Vaccines won’t be as effective as thought - back into lockdown

I’m not sure why people believe that life will be normal by June.

I would bet my house on the fact that it won’t.
We are such a long long LONG way from normality.

Don’t mean to be a doom monger but people really need to keep things in perspective

I can handle the pessimism but it's the superiority of it that annoys me.

FuckingFabulous · 23/02/2021 09:41

*superfluous 'in'

OliveTree75 · 23/02/2021 09:41

Yes I do think this is the start of the end of the road. Mainly because covid is going nowhere, we have very good vaccines and mainly because we cannot live like this forever! We have to get back to normal for so many reasons. Personally I can't wait!

SugarfreeBlitz · 23/02/2021 09:42

Whether it is "the end" or not, it will be the end for some. People die every day so it's good to just be happy in each day with what we have and of course hope is important too.

I think it would be foolish to think all is "normal" again and tend to think we are a long way from normal, but lighter days are coming and there will be things to enjoy.

Exactly. Especially when 'sorry' or 'I'm afraid' are used to add weight to their uninformed opinions. As in 'We need to be realistic, I'm afraid', or 'Sorry, but life isn't ever going to be back to normal again'.

As though they were experts rather than MNers with too much time on their hands.

I am also a "realist" and I disagree with the OP's opinions.

LadyCatStark · 23/02/2021 09:50

OFFS let’s just all resign ourselves to a lifetime of sitting on the sofa watching Netflix shall we. We might as well just all die now then. Oh no wait, I forgot, life must be preserved at all costs.

Jolly good

Thanks for letting us all know

Hairwizard · 23/02/2021 09:53

Lockdowns cant and def shouldnt happen again. Ever. Cant see how anyone would be up for more after all this.
We should be doing what we can to stop them ever using it again.

everythingisstillginandroses · 23/02/2021 09:56

Bozo isn't flipping a switch that will set everyone FREEEEEEEE in the summer, that's just dumb stuff for the tabloids. The scientific advances are massively heartening, though.

As to how people deal with things on MN, it cuts both ways, I think. There are pessimistic threads on here, but also plenty of threads mocking and baiting those who want to take a cautious approach, banging on about 'half-lives' and how they're going to burn their masks at the earliest opportunity, I had it and it was no worse than a cold (well, jolly good for you Hmm), etc. I think of them as the Joy Police, compulsory cheerfulness, it's just un-British Grin

Bluntness100 · 23/02/2021 09:56

Out of curiosity op, how will you feel when it does in fact go back to normal in the timeline given and as witty predicts this basically becomes like a flu we live with and everyone is going back to normal life?

Will you be pleased or secretly gutted?

Moondust001 · 23/02/2021 09:56

Well you have spectacularly failed at both those things.

It irrelevant now - new variants, vaccine, whatever - if the doomsayers like you are right it won't mean anything. The human race cannot live in this way much longer, and we will just have to suck up whatever happens, just as we have for our entire existence.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/02/2021 09:59

I agree. I Don see the point in hoping for anything to just be disappointed again. It would be great if we were back to normal by then, but I don't believe it.

Spillanelle · 23/02/2021 10:00

I get why some people feel the need to think like this though; expect the worst and you won’t be disappointed.

And the reality is that of course we cant 100% know what might happen between now and June, but all signs are pointing to the vaccine rollout going well, the vaccines being effective and things vastly improving, so I see no reason to believe that ending restrictions by June is unrealistic.

Cling onto your pessimism if that’s what keeps you sane OP, but don’t assume everyone else is stupid for believing differently.

Cissyandflora · 23/02/2021 10:02

I have a friend on the front line. She says we will be back to deaths of 1000 + per day a couple of weeks after we come out of lockdown. I’m really not a doom monger and neither is she. But she’s seeing it. She’s losing colleagues. She’s normally incredibly strong and pragmatic but after a year she is now traumatised.
It is tantalising to think this could all be over in a couple of months but realistically we are not there and it could get worse yet.

@Bluntness100

Secretly gutted. I love living in lockdown.... Confused

Just because I don’t believe things will be normal by June, doesn’t mean I don’t want things to be normal.

InkyOctopus · 23/02/2021 10:03

I agree with you OP but feel like we can’t speak it out loud. I think the government wants to cheer people up but of course cases will rise so those targets won’t be met.

I think this “roadmap” may be realistic but with a much longer timescale, maybe a year-18 months? (and up and down in terms of further restrictions).

I understand the need for hope!! I guess I’m always pessimistic because I like to be prepared and hate being disappointed.

Bluntness100 · 23/02/2021 10:04

I find it quite amusing. They are so desperate for this not to be the end they come on here and say “look I know better than witty and valance and people this is what you need to believe, hear me hear me” when in reality it’s just some unqualified random sitting at home proclaiming to be an expert 😂😂😂

You are a doom monger, pessimistic person.
Some others are hopeful and optimistic.
There you go.

psychomath · 23/02/2021 10:07

@allyjay

I think I'm being realistic in believing in the vaccines because evidence so far suggests they ARE effective. I actually think in a few months time when the kids have gone back to school, and the sky hasn't fallen in, and with millions more vaccinated that this board will become obsolete because there's nowt to talk (obsess) about any more. Hope so anyway Smile
Are you kidding? This board will be here forever Grin

"I don't think xyz restrictions should be relaxed yet when not all adults have been vaccinated - young healthy adults still get long covid"

"I don't think xyz restrictions should be relaxed yet because the vaccines only prevent 95% of cases, what about the other 5%?"

"Did you hear about this variant from Timbuktu that was discovered two hours ago? The vaccines definitely won't work against it and it will have a 100% fatality rate"

"I know everyone's been vaccinated, it's effective against all the variants we know of and community infection rates are low, but I just feel like it's still too soon to be getting on planes and packing into crowded nightclubs - this situation is identical to 2020 in every respect, have we learned nothing?!"

"I'm really disappointed that the pandemic didn't change anything in the long term by making all 9-5 jobs obsolete and transforming society into a nature-worshipping anti-consumerist utopia where we all enjoy a slower pace of life"

And eleventy billion threads about "one person dies from rare virus in Asia will this be the NEXT GLOBAL PANDEMIC?!"
