Do people really think this is the road to the end...?! Surely NOT!

Do you honestly think we’re on the road to the end of all this...?!

Here’s how I see things...

New variants will emerge - back into lockdown
Vaccines won’t be as effective as thought - back into lockdown

I’m not sure why people believe that life will be normal by June.

I would bet my house on the fact that it won’t.
We are such a long long LONG way from normality.

Don’t mean to be a doom monger but people really need to keep things in perspective

wow I wish i had a crystal ball like you OP

BillMasen · 23/02/2021 08:57

Great example of how people need to feel either positive or negative to cope

Some need the boost of the positive, believing it’ll all be over soon helps them cope and if it isn’t, well it will be sometime. They’re less worried by the disappointment of delay

Some like the op need to think the worst, have the bad play out in their mind (maybe because it means no surprises, no false hope). They see the risk of being disappointed as greater

Both are fine but both can see the other as “wrong” and try to “correct “ then

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2021 08:59

Well there’s certainly a possibility vaccines will work less well on new variants, but given how efficacious they are on what we have, there’s quite a cushion before we need to worry about high levels of severe disease overwhelming the health service.

I don’t think the chances of a totally vaccine resistance mutation emerging are terribly high. And vaccines can be tweaked. I’m not saying it’s plain sailing from now, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

MsTSwift · 23/02/2021 09:05

I think in a few years Covid will be like the flu. Like those poor people that died of aids at the start now hiv is a controllable long term condition

LizzieBirmingham · 23/02/2021 09:05

All of the evidence so far points to the vaccines being more effective than previously believed but let’s not allow boring things like science get in the way of OP’s wailing about the end of the world Hmm

LastTrainEast · 23/02/2021 09:05

Your certainty that it won't be better and that vaccines will fail etc is NOT getting it into perspective at all.

FrangipaniBlue · 23/02/2021 09:06

Depends what you mean by "the end" though really doesn't it?

Do I think things will be back to how they were in 2019 pre-Covid? Absolutely not and I don't believe they ever will be.

Can I see light at the end of the tunnel that means I can see friends, participate in sporting events and go on holiday (all of which with some differences to how we've done these things in the past)? You're damn right I can.

Oysterbabe · 23/02/2021 09:08

The vaccine data so far is amazing. Infection rates, deaths and hospital admissions are all falling. There's every reason to be positive.

BakewellGin1 · 23/02/2021 09:08

Maybe for those who have been struggling it gives a glimmer of hope, a little optimism, glass more full then empty kind of feeling.

Yes things might change on the way however hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel for those who need it.

People are low enough without people piling in with additional doom

MiddlesexGirl · 23/02/2021 09:10

My perspective tells me that this is the beginning of the end, thank God.

Not to say that a new different epidemic couldn't hit in a few years time or maybe less, but at least we will be better prepared now we've gone through this once.

At last, we can look forward to normal life again and have some rough dates to work towards.

ContessaDiPulpo · 23/02/2021 09:11

I'm a professional sceptic OP (and plough my way through medical research for a living), but even I'm a bit more optimistic than that. Yes, there will be variants, but a) the vaccines will impede transmission as the virus won't be able to replicate anywhere near as much and b) the variants will have far less opportunity to get to new hosts because of the continuing restrictions in place. So yeah, it's not an immediate return to normal, and June may be optimistic. But I am hopeful about August Smile

BebesChamber · 23/02/2021 09:12

I agree with you OP.
I'll believe freedom when it actually happens. My arse can I see hundreds of people being allowed at at a wedding come June, my arse.

TheKeatingFive · 23/02/2021 09:12

What I think is very important is that lessons are learned from this that mean we are better prepared for another pandemic in the future.

We were totally caught with our pants down and suffering could have been minimised with better preparation.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/02/2021 09:13

The thing about pessimistic people is that never really enjoy the good times. They often say stuff like ‘don’t get your hopes up too high otherwise you’ll end up being disappointed’ but it just means they carry on being miserable.

What pessimists don’t realise is that optimists never remain disappointed for long so it doesn’t matter anyway.

Roll on summer.

GrapefruitGin · 23/02/2021 09:13

Leave people to believe whatever brings them a bit of peace and optimism. It makes no difference to you if someone has that opinion. God, I hope you’re not lumping this negativity on your friends and family too.

Violetsarered · 23/02/2021 09:14

@siestalady

wow I wish i had a crystal ball like you OP
@siestalady I didn’t say I had a crystal ball.

There are some people who believe this will end on the 21st June, that life will be normal.

I’m not one of them.

Neither side has a crystal ball, we just have our own beliefs.

OP posts:
CheeseJalapenoBread · 23/02/2021 09:15

They want to believe it’s true, as you want to believe it’s false.

Just because you assert “the way [you] see it” doesn’t mean your belief has any more validity than theirs.

You’re entitled to your opinion but I don’t get this desire to stamp any who dares to have a little bit of optimism.

Is your degree in epidemiology, immunology or microbiology?

Have you been busy working with Sage? Hope they're listening to your evidence when they make decisions.

Yes the above is sarcastic and tongue in cheek. I'm so fed up of every random person thinking they know better than people who spend their lives studying the way viruses and vaccines work in order to help make the best decisions. Has it occurred to you that those scientists might just know a bit more than you do?

GCAcademic · 23/02/2021 09:16

Some people cope better by having hope.

Others cope better by planning for the worst.

Whatever kind of person you are, let others get on with doing what works for them.

hamstersarse · 23/02/2021 09:16

Normality will include a new endemic virus.

Doesn't mean we have to spend the rest of our lives holed up in our homes. You can of course if you wish, but most people will probably require the freedom to face the risk should they chose to.

And this....The thing about pessimistic people is that never really enjoy the good times

IcedPurple · 23/02/2021 09:16

But people cetainly don't need to keep things in YOUR perspective, do they? You have no more insight or expertise than anyone else here.

@GrapefruitGin

My friends and family believe the same as me.
We’re not being negative, we’re being realists.

psychomath · 23/02/2021 09:19

"Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans"

Hmm, I always took this one to be about people who don't appreciate their life as it's happening, because they're always dreaming about what they'll do 'one day'. Not about plans getting derailed as such. Appreciate the selection of quotations though, all very true!

twelly · 23/02/2021 09:19

We have to move back to normality , we can’t go on like this. Covid is here to stay in some form or another and we just need to learn to live with it and except that
