Testing positive after vaccine

My dad recently had the Pfizer jab but has been extremely unwell. He tested positive on a lateral flow (wife works in the nhs) I’m so angry as he barely left the house the whole pandemic. Is this from the vaccine or has he caught COVID from the vaccine place? I live 3hrs away so can’t help.

It takes a couple of weeks after most vaccines for immunity to be gained, so I imagine he was very unlucky and caught it from the vaccine place, if that's the only place he's been.

My sympathies- I know it's a worrying time. Hope he's OK.

WineInTheWillows · 21/02/2021 18:50

Alsoz it's worth noting that lateral flow tests have a reasonably high false positive rate- he'll need to have a PCR test to confirm.

The false positive rate is about 0.3%. You can't catch the virus from the vaccine.

I'm afraid he could have caught it at the vaccine centre or from his wife? Hard to tell really. Everything was very distanced when I had my vaccine.

How long ago did he have the vaccine? I hope he makes a swift recovery and doesn't feel too unwell Thanks

covetingthepreciousthings · 21/02/2021 18:59

Even though he's not left the house presumable he could have caught it from his wife possibly? I don't think lateral flow tests are completely accurate so maybe hers has been a false negative?

Hope he feel better soon though.

Thanks. I realised I have posted twice. Symptoms started a few days after the vaccine and he has been bedridden all week. True he could have caught it from his wife but she is non patient facing.

Its not from the vaccine. DP has just tested positive 3 weeks after vaccination, just bad luck unfortunately.

disappointed101 · 21/02/2021 19:03

I hope your husband isn’t too bad Athing x

Has it stopped severe illness /as in hospitalisation
Navigationcentral · 21/02/2021 19:04

You do not catch covid from the vaccine.

Dustyboots · 21/02/2021 19:05

Where did your your DP catch Covid from @Athinginitself?

trumpisaflump · 21/02/2021 19:06

He tested positive a few days after the vaccine. He won't get any protection from the vaccine until 2 to 3 weeks after. The vaccine will not have caused this.

Dustyboots · 21/02/2021 19:06

This thread isn’t filling me with confidence that the vaccine is going to get us out of this mess ...

disappointed101 · 21/02/2021 19:08

Sorry dusty :( I think he must have caught it from where he had the vaccine. He said it was very busy. I just hope to God he doesn’t get worse.

No vaccine works immediately. Some unlucky people will catch it before the vaccine has time to have an effect. This is why some people think the flu jab can give people flu.
Athinginitself · 21/02/2021 19:10

@Dustyboots

Where did your your DP catch Covid from *@Athinginitself*?
Unsure. He works in a hospital so probably there although no known cases around him.
TitusPullo · 21/02/2021 19:11

Hi OP, I think it’s likely from his wife unfortunately, not that it’s her fault! Non-patient facing staff and patient facing staff mix all the time so that means nothing really. I hope your Dad gets well soon.

Athinginitself · 21/02/2021 19:13

Hopefully it'll prevent serious illness. DP is pretty ill as in bad flu +awful cough but that's it so far.

Why?

Everyone knows that it takes up to 3 weeks for the effect to build up, why would one random person catching covid after their jab make you suddenly think that the vaccine isn't the solution we've been waiting for? Nothing has changed, this isn't news.

Hope he makes a full recovery OP

Mindymomo · 21/02/2021 19:23

Has he had a PCR test to confirm that he has covid, as this is recommended after a positive lateral flow test. How long ago did he have his vaccine?

Dustyboots · 21/02/2021 19:25

Yes, but catching it from the vaccination centre ... that’s not good. A testing centre is down the road from me and I’m going nowhere near it. You can see it’s unsafe.

I hope your dad gets better soon OP and also your DP @Athinginitself

ChasingRainbows19 · 21/02/2021 19:39

Nowhere is completely covid safe 100%. He could of caught it from his wife or the vaccine centre but you won’t really know for sure.

When my dad went for his vaccination we made sure he took his own sanitiser, own pen for the forms and he carefully changed his mask once he left the building. He was Lots of sanitiser throughout and changed his clothes on return. Might seem extreme but he has shielded and this was a big fear of getting that far to catch it there.
