Fabulous!

New Pfizer data - 98.9% effective at preventing death

Is there any data on death prevention after one dose? I've had mine last week but my next one isn't until May, so I'm wondering how at risk I'll be until then (although incredibly grateful I've had it at all)

Motorina · 20/02/2021 22:19

The left hand column (dose 2 + seven days) is effectively the one dose data, as the second dose will not have kicked in by then.

Thanks for making those of us who had the AstraZeneca, feel as if we had the inferior vaccine! Envy

Well that’s great as my 65 year old mum just got AZ.

The AZ trials did not use sufficient numbers of people over 65 to test its efficacy in those groups so honestly I think they should have only given that one to under 65s until we have more data. The US and Canada have reduced to approve it yet because of this, but a study is being done in the US to test this. I really hope it is just as effective in older people and I think this is quite a gamble to take. Really disappointing science, frankly.

Susie477 · 20/02/2021 22:43

The Israelis are doing amazing work in researching how the Pfizer vaccine works in the real world and publishing their findings in real time.

Israel 🇮🇱 is leading the world out of the pandemic, we must learn from them.

picklespark · 20/02/2021 22:43

*refused to approve it

How does it do that? There isn't comparable data from the AZ yet, because these numbers are from Israel and they didn't use it.Confused

I'm sure I'll get the AZ, but I'm delighted by these results for Pfizer.

picklespark · 20/02/2021 22:47

Btw though OP it is great news about the Pfizer, just really wish my mum had that one as we have the concrete data to show it would protect her sufficiently.

Northernsoullover · 20/02/2021 22:54

This is wonderful news! My mum got Pfizered but my dad who is more vulnerable had AZ. I am naturally concerned but I'm just grateful he has had something.

musicalfrog · 20/02/2021 22:54

Are we really having Pfizer v AZ wars now? Is there not enough shit going on in the world @InkyWinky wind your neck in!

Puzzledtenant · 20/02/2021 23:00

The AZ one hasn't got comparable test data out yet but that doesn't mean it'll be useless! They developed it to be effective, they didn't just find a Pfizer alternative in the bins Grin Even if it's slightly less effective the numbers of people having any sort of vaccine will give a massive drop in transmissions.

Susie477 · 20/02/2021 23:09

It’s evident from all the data coming out of Israel that Pfizer have absolutely smashed it out of the park.

Even if the AZ vaccine isn’t quite as outstandingly effective, it still keeps people alive, keeps them out of hospital, prevents them getting seriously ill and cuts transmission massively. And that’s what matters.

I will take whichever I’m given, and be grateful for it.

I read somewhere 85% after first dose.
covetingthepreciousthings · 20/02/2021 23:12

That's amazing!

I just hope the figures are similarly effective in preventing death after 10-12 weeks between doses.. and not just the 21 days.

I'll find you a grip.

AZ is excellent at preventing death & serious illness after one dose.

You can't compare effectiveness as they do not share the same criteria.

Eyewhisker · 20/02/2021 23:16

Great news. The German-Turkish couple who developed this are really inspirational. They hope to use the same technology for personalised vaccines against cancer.

herecomesthsun · 20/02/2021 23:18

So - those are good figures.

Although there were figures previously that suggested 100% protection against serious illness or death (was that Pfizer or Oxford? either way you would expect that with more data therre would be a few exceptions).

What I would really like to know (as someone CEV who has 1 dose) is who were the people who died then?

as in what were their risk factors?

what were their underlying health conditions?

were they men?

how old were they?

(very interesting data though, thank you Smile)

Eyewhisker · 20/02/2021 23:20

The preventing infection number is incredible. If people aren’t infected they aren’t transmitting. Over 90% reduction in transmission is a game changer.

TemperIWasLosin · 20/02/2021 23:22

My guess is that they were 1 person who inevitably died because people do that sometimes.

FaithfullyYours · 20/02/2021 23:26

I will be grateful for any vaccine I receive. DH who works for the NHS is very healthy, absolutely no underlying conditions and he got Pfizer.
I,on the other hand,am in group 6 with underlying conditions and might most probably get AZ but this doesn't bother me one bit. I have a lot of confidence in the vaccine that it will atleast protect me from severe illness, hospitalisation or even death.

Brilliant news about Pfizer though.

BrownEyedBlonde · 20/02/2021 23:31

This is absolutely wonderful news but I have similar thoughts to @herecomesthsun, I’ve had the Pfizer vaccine but advice from my local hospital currently is that immunocompromised individuals may not make a full antibody response and so should still continue to follow advice to avoid exposure to Covid-19. Would like to hear more research regarding this, is there anything out there yet?

turnitonagain · 20/02/2021 23:36

The mRNA vaccines - Pfizer and Moderna - are really top of the class in effectiveness. All of the viral vector types like AZ, J&J have topped out at around 60-70%. Hopefully with a good mix and enough people vaccinated herd immunity can still be reached.

ChocOrange1 · 21/02/2021 07:00

@InkyWinky

What? The two vaccines can both be highly effective, one being good doesn't make the other bad. Honestly, some people are so negative.
ChocOrange1 · 21/02/2021 07:03

Although there were figures previously that suggested 100% protection against serious illness or death
The initial testing which gave the 100% figure was in a smaller sample and they would have all been healthy people so unlikely to die anyway. Now the vaccine has mainly been given to much older people, so it is not that surprising that the numbers are lower as these people have a higher chance of dying in the first place. 98% is still an amazing reduction.
