Just read this, apologies if there’s another post elsewhere about it.

Sudden panic that it equals lockdown past spring?

The only thing I would hope that a year on they limit it to companies who really need it. They won’t but I wish they would.

Bear in mind that redundancy processes and notice periods take time. A hospitality employer who doesn’t have a guarantee that they can open fully could be in deep trouble if they lay themselves open to wage bills with no source of income to pay them.

The Treasury needs to keep the furlough scheme in place for months into the future in order to reassure employers that they are safe to keep their employees on the books otherwise they’d be legally forced to start making redundancies to prevent insolvent trading lawsuits.

Which is exactly what happened in the autumn. Tens of thousands of staff made redundant because the extension to furlough was announced too late, when in early summer Germany, France etc had said it would continue there into 2021. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the UK Government makes a late announcement again costing tens of thousands more jobs when they know there is a legal 45-60 day process for redundancies depending on the size of business - so as an absolute minimum - companies need to know about any extension 2 months beforehand. Total incompetence from start to finish. Who voted for these muppets??

I have to say the way furlough has been handled it feels as though the government actually wanted businesses to make people redundant to reduce the numbers on the scheme.

The economic incompetence shown by this government has been astounding. Neither Johnson nor Sunak give a shit about any of us.

Don't get me started on the 3 million who have had nothing!
