Announcement just made for NI that most kids won't be going back to school until after the Easter holidays, and there's no guarantee of that. So fed up.

I desperately hope my DS year group goes back ASAP. As a Year 7 he has hardly been in his new school since starting and missed his last few months of primary. He is however working well via Teams, has had excellent support from his Subject Tutors and I take my hat off to them as on the few occasions he has emailed them to ask a question on a topic he doesn't understand they have taken the time to reply on top of their already heavy workload and therefore I don't feel he is behind (although nothing is as good for his learning as being in classes, amongst his peers) and being able to ask questions directly.

Fingers crossed he doesn't have to wait until Easter. The school have managed any cases so well for the time they were back I feel they have it as controlled as they can with all necessary precautions.

Youngest DS is scheduled to start 2 year old provision in April a few mornings per week so I hope he can get there to interact with other children as he hasn't really since turning 1 almost a year ago.

I suppose we will find out Monday and deal with whatever that brings then. Same as every other time. We all have our preferences but it is what it is and if there is no choice its down to dealing with it best we can.

motherrunner · 18/02/2021 19:45

Thanks you @SpencerGregson, and I’m sorry to hear of your separation too.

I’m not sad or angry about returning to the classroom, my own children will be happy to be back, I just think if I’m ‘safe’ enough to be in front of 150+ teens a day, why can’t I just see my mum?

Heyhohi · 18/02/2021 19:45

There won’t be another lockdown, at least not till November 2021. They just cannot justify another late spring summer lockdown like there was one last year.

ThePenIsBlue · 18/02/2021 19:47

@Lemons1571

I hope for this for England too. But I’m lucky that they are ok ish with homeschool and I wfh. I just want teacher DH to be safer, which he would be if schools are emptier
Is your DH clinically vulnerable? Is he old? What is this obsession with keeping heathy, “normal” people “safe?” FFS, for most people catching Covid is a minor inconvenience not a death sentence. 🙄
 • apologies if your DH is indeed vulnerable in some way. Caveat.
Heyhohi · 18/02/2021 19:47

I feel so sorry for any teens - young adults at the moment.

Woolff · 18/02/2021 19:47

@MarshaBradyo Some have been doing on screen version for nearly two terms.

It's been half a term. If it goes on until Easter, (another - 5 week - half of a term) it'll still only be one term.

Hollanda40 · 18/02/2021 19:47
@Hollanda40 I didn't mention 'selfish' - that was you, more than I could keep track of.

And I was referring to parents who want millions of people mixing so their kids can see their mates, not any of the things you've described.

We all would prefer normal. And some things are more important individually.

I happen to agree that not being able to see family members is incredibly detrimental. I don't really agree that not seeing all thirty of your randomly assigned class of peers at once l, for just a while, is terrible for children's futures.

And my point was they this has been dressed up as kids needing to go back to learn better, when it's now been said that they need their friends (and maybe to be out of their parents' way...)
There have been benefits to having the kids here more (I finish work at 2pm to pick DD from nursery when she goes). We've learned crafts, done loads of baking, experimented with cooking, taught DS about finances and budgeting etc which he wouldn't learn at school at 9. We've been for lovely walks weather permitting, done so much lovely stuff. I'd never wish the kids to be at school so they're not"under our feet" or "out our way"...DH WFH and he said he's never wished for that, hard as things are sometimes!!!

It's just a bad day today and I've been thrown the word SELFISH at me for simply wanting the smallest of things whilst listening to preachers go on and on about how we'd be best in lockdown until late spring or summer!!!!!!!!

I apologise. My mental health is taking a battering today!!!

What? We did it for a whole term last year.

We’ve had one term in school

PinkFondantFancy · 18/02/2021 19:48

I'm so sorry OP, you must be beside yourself. I'm desperately hoping the same thing doesn't happen here

CrumpetTastic · 18/02/2021 19:49

As much as I’m struggling I hope for this too.
I’m sick of giving up everything for schools to go back and end up in another lockdown.
Slowly we’re making progress and it’s one step closer to life back.

TwelvePaws · 18/02/2021 19:49

Yes, only 20 compare to what they learn at school, as it’s not just academic side what they get from going to a school

Thank you. Academically, my kids in year 12 and year 7 are learning more. But yes, they’re missing out on practical lessons etc and obviously friendships. Primary is much harder I think to judge on how they’re doing academically, the work seems more vague and it’s harder to know what they’re taking in.

blue25 · 18/02/2021 19:49
@diggetydoolittle yes perhaps actually it should be on a case by case basis for everyone to have the option to repeat a year.
How the hell would that work practically? What about classroom space, teacher availability? Just too many issues.

siestalady · 18/02/2021 19:51

Agree so much with this!

But roll that line out and you'll soon get jumped on for "BUT LONG COVID"

honestly I think there are some people on here who have just lost all sense of reasonable risk and being able to assess it for themselves. The conditioning of the masses to be terrified of covid is far more of a worry for our society than the bloody virus is!

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 18/02/2021 19:54

I hope that they do the same in England but phase back some kids from infants and those in yr 10 and 12 after March 8th. We are finally making some headway, let’s not undo it all.

megletsecond · 18/02/2021 19:56

I do have sympathy with people struggling, its shit, But a lot of us struggle anyway and have not much to get back to.
I'm a working lone parent who has spend the last decade trying to keep healthy as no one else is going to look after my kids. I can't do down time or illness as I'm quite fond of paying my bills and trying to stop DD from smashing up the house.

or maybe some people on here understand the situation better than you?

and want to follow the science?

SAGE are advising the government on this, you know. There is a strong steer towards caution from some of them.

Heyhohi · 18/02/2021 19:58

I’ve got a year 12 as well, no way he is learning more at home, there is no routine, no social interaction and so on

TooMuchYarn · 18/02/2021 20:01

That is shocking. Poor kids. Schools here were closed for six weeks last Spring, and have been open since apart from holidays. The kids have to wear masks from Year 5, and teachers wear FFP2 masks (provided in school). And the windows are kept open (army have provided blankets to some schools). So not great, but it’s a lot better than closed for months on end.

WombatChocolate · 18/02/2021 20:01

Isn’t it the case now that all the devolved nations are going for a staggered return to school. It would be mad to think England will suddenly send them all back in one go.

Quite why anyone has thought that would happen, baffles me.

GintyMcGinty · 18/02/2021 20:02

I fear Scotland will be the same.

Children's wellbeing, mental and physical health, development and education are being damaged daily.

Some will never recover.

TableFlowerss · 18/02/2021 20:05

What a shame for the kids.... terrible.

The year 6’s will be thrown in to secondary school not having a clue.

You would’ve think that about 1/4 of the population have been VACCINATED! Poor poor kids - it’s terrible. I worry about the MH of these children 😢

TableFlowerss · 18/02/2021 20:06

wouldn’t think

Mummy195 · 18/02/2021 20:07

Around 1000 deaths per day, (not per month/ week, but per day) from an infectious disease that can be brought down sounds like people dying like flies to me.

That death is permanent.

I would rather sacrifice a few more weeks/ months of being 'fed up' , than have that unforgiving death.

ThePenIsBlue · 18/02/2021 20:08

What? 450 people today.

Completely agree- I could cry for many of these kids and what they’re sacrificing. Covid related effects only count if they’re physical though.... fuck the MH of the younger generation- it’s appalling
