Announcement just made for NI that most kids won't be going back to school until after the Easter holidays, and there's no guarantee of that. So fed up.

@MrPickles73

monkey tennis listen to the BMJ youtube on schools. Transmission in primary schools was v low and mostly facilitated by staff... Transmission is higher in secondary schools.
I'm a secondary teacher. Yes I am aware of transmission rates in schools. Primary children have one of the highest rates at the moment. I wonder why...(26% of primary aged children in compared with 5% of secondary).
Monkeytennis97 · 19/02/2021 07:54

Also 'mostly facilitated by staff'. Rubbish. Primary children I think were 3 times more likely to be the index case in their families and secondary age children were 7 times more likely to be the index case in their families (I think this was towards the end of last term). Where were the parents (some of whom are school staff of course) catching it from? The children who are mixing with others more than anyone else in society was at the time.

LadyPenelope68 · 19/02/2021 07:55

@BrideofBideford
It’s unacceptable, schools have open in other countries in Feb
Yes because those countries have had stricter lockdowns than us and have massively lower rates than we’ve ever had, that’s why! You can’t even compare.

TwelvePaws · 19/02/2021 07:56

In fact there is more teaching and learning going on as there is less low level behaviour for me to deal with. Lots of positive parental emails too.

That’s been my children’s experience too. My kids have liked that there’s less interruptions from bad behaviour. Some teachers are not setting homework as they’re now ahead of where they should be.

LadyPenelope68 · 19/02/2021 07:58

They said the 8th March would be the absolute earliest possible, if rates are t low enough and it’s not felt safe then it won’t be the 8th, could be much later. Too many people are so fixated that they’ll be back in the 8th, that’s not what was said. NI have made the right decision.

Fab, homeschool for you from now on
Monkeytennis97 · 19/02/2021 08:02

@OnlyFoolsnMothers just putting the other side of the coin out there.

I might look into it as I've been enjoying it as a teacher. I know many others haven't and can't wait to get back into the classroom but as it stands for my subject the classroom experience has been heavily restricted due to Covid there is no difference now between what I do in the classroom or online- except I can teach more online as stated before.

ArmsClary · 19/02/2021 08:02

@WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo DD's highest position on all criteria, for all schools she likes, is 3rd (behind siblings and past pupil siblings, of course Hmm). Her first choice school (when AQE was still proceeding) is still looking like her most promising one.

How about you?

We've accepted that it's completely out of our hands. We're hopeful.

This is such a lonely place to be but I'm glad you started this thread, seeing even one more person in the same situation helps (misery in numbers Grin).

LadyPenelope68 · 19/02/2021 08:06

@buffyp
This is what needs to happen in England too. No it isn’t and thankfully it won’t
Got a crystal ball have you buffy? What a ridiculous comment, you can’t know that at all.

LadyPenelope68 · 19/02/2021 08:15

@WanderingMilly
The news this evening said rates are falling amongst all ages except children (which doesn't surprise me) and that this may have implications for schools going back.....I'm not if it was BBC or ITV as I just had the TV on in the background.
It’s been in all the news channels all day Milly, to the point I’m wondering if this is a drip feed to pre-warn that schools aren’t going back in on the 8th, particularly primary age who the report are saying have the highest rising number of cases.

I hope we do follow the route NI are taking and no schools are back until after Easter, we then stand much more chance of avoiding a further lockdown in a few months.

Fembot123 · 19/02/2021 08:17

@Gobbeldegook

I hope to god there's not a zombie apocalypse on the horizon or all our kids are dead. No sense in this world
What do you mean?
WhenSheWasBad · 19/02/2021 08:21

@TheTeenageYears

I cannot see the point in getting everyone back in school for what in most cases will be 3 weeks followed by a 2 week holiday. It makes so much more sense to just open after the Easter holidays. Many more people will be vaccinated by then including the vast majority of 2nd vaccines for the highest priority groups. Lots of people rely more on older relatives when children are at school and that help is much more likely to be available in mid April than early March. I don't think the U.K. could survive another lockdown so it's better to be cautious now.
Totally agree.

I’m not sure why people are pointing out infections started to drop in November (with schools in).
November was followed by December, which had a new variant. Huge increase in numbers.

I suspect if we go back before Easter we will be in another lockdown in May. I really want this to be the last lockdown.

I’ve read threads where some people say they live lockdown, gives them an excuse to not to see people and enjoy their introvert self ....doesn’t mean it’s the majority or the norm

Fembot123 · 19/02/2021 08:30

I’m not sure what the Zombie apocalypse is in reference to but I have seen a lot of ‘If this was Ebola/killing kids, you’d stay in’ Well duuuuuur, yes we would but no it isn’t so what is the point there except for hyperbole.

TwelvePaws · 19/02/2021 08:31

Fab, homeschool for you from now on

Excuse me? I was commenting back to someone about my kids experience of homeschooling from an academic point of view. If you’ve read my other posts on this and other threads you would see that I’ve said my kids would like to see their friends, which this sort of homeschooling doesn’t facilitate. I’ve also said that my kids want to go back when it’s ok to do so and I want that for them too. My son is doing some sciences at A level so is missing out on practicals for a start.
So go away with your unnecessary shitty little comment that obviously doesn’t suit your narrative that homeschooling must be terrible in every single way for everyone. Or whatever the fuck your problem is with my comment. 🍑 🍩

Fembot123 · 19/02/2021 08:36

This isn’t homeschooling anyway, it’s working from home for kids 😁

Monkeytennis97 · 19/02/2021 08:36

@OnlyFoolsnMothers well lockdown has been hell for us as we've not been able to see our vulnerable DS who lives in a care home. It's certainly not been a barrel of laughs here. The only saving grace is that I've felt safer this term compared to last term.

Redtulipses · 19/02/2021 08:37

The education is still very much being facilitated by teachers. Your kids are just at home, with you

If only it were that simple Hmm

I think that’s horrendous for you and your family I’m so sorry.
I just cannot support schools being closed any longer seeing the suffering of children

TheKeatingFive · 19/02/2021 08:40

I actually snorted.

With a six year old at home and school giving us 30 mins live lessons a week, this is complete crap.

hopeishere · 19/02/2021 08:44

The homeschooling provision imixed. DS's school (grammar) has vastly improved from the first lockdown. But it's definitely not the same as being in school.

That makes sense, fewer children will currently be in secondaries as at that age they should be able to stay home independently in the main. Primary schools have far more children in this lockdown than last April.

Don’t you just love blanket statements about what is happening for ALL kids, but then we are so desperate to fling our kids in school without a backwards glance we’d let them be gobbled to bits by Zombies or some other fantasy creature.

do you have actual credible data for this, or was it just something you vaguely heard from your TV whilst doing something else?

The latest ONS report showed drops for all school age children - see figure 4 on this page: www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/coronaviruscovid19infectionsurveypilot/latest#age-analysis-of-the-number-of-people-who-had-covid-19-in-england

CrumpetTastic · 19/02/2021 09:20

‘ I just cannot support schools being closed any longer seeing the suffering of children’

I can’t stand reading these statements any longer whilst there’s children at the other side of the world that don’t even get clean water never mind an education.
I can’t imagine getting coronavirus would be fun for many children or their families either.
Nothing is ideal at the moment, it’s shit for everyone but that does not equate to suffering. Children in abusive situations need to be dealt with separately.
