Can I travel by train?

Apologies for being slightly dense but the information out there is confusing.
I want to travel by train Norwich to London in the next two weeks. My father is having a serious operation as has cancer and as a result my mum is going into a respite home as he can’t look after her (she has diabetes, stroke and is immobile). He will probably have home care but I want to be there. (My husband gets regularly tested with work). I just don’t want to get into trouble on the way down.

I don't think you'll be challenged, but I would have this handy if you were challenged.

I'm afraid they tend to charge first and you have to fight your case in court later (see Anthea Turner's adventure). Few of those levied fines etc. are having to pay them, though.

Travel is allowed for essential reasons. This is an essential reason.

Yes, it’s allowed. Try and book off peak train times.

My DD travelled by train from the south coast to London this week for a medical appointment. She wasn't challenged and said she was alone in the carriage. She also said London was very quiet.

I doubt peak time trains are remotely busy to/from Norwich on that London line, but probably still extra expensive at peak times.

Thankyou for the replies. I went down last weekend and it was shockingly quiet. No one queried my movements either plus I think it’s the cheapest fare I’ve ever brought. I’m glad I went. My dad is in a lot of pain and has basically been left to fend for himself and is feeling very depressed. My mum also seems to be going slightly senile and has only been in the home a week in isolation. Worryingly I can’t get through to her on her mobile and when we can she’s making no sense. Still it was an interesting visit standing on a street corner and communicating through a window at her care home.

So sorry to hear your parents are struggling

Yes definitely fine to travel for caring needs or to assist someone vulnerable, and it doesn't make a difference whether this is by private or public transport :)
