If audiences/spectators are allowed at events this summer, will you go?

I have various plans to attend sporting events and theatre shows this summer, some held over from last year, some booked in hope things will be normal, some booked with social distancing plans in place. I don't know if they will go ahead, but if they do, I'll be there. But I've been watching the Aus Open this week and they've said that despite a daily capacity of 30,000, they haven't had anywhere near those numbers in. Presumably people don't feel safe enough going, because I would imagine those tickets would sell out easily in normal times (or maybe there just aren't enough locals interested and fans from further away can't travel?). So it made me think, if events like Wimbledon go ahead this summer, will there be an appetite for it?

Yes. And happy to wear a mask.

Donatella · 13/02/2021 18:53

I'm less surprised by the people saying they won't wear masks than I am by the lack of people saying they won't go regardless of whatever measures will be in place - I thought there would be a more split opinion about whether it would be wise. I'm glad though, because it shows that these sectors have a good chance of recovery, that people will still choose to buy tickets and help them back on their feet.

I’d go now

AnneElliott · 13/02/2021 18:54

Yes - I have theatre tickets booked for April, May, June and July and if they're open then I'm going.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/02/2021 18:54

No, we will be avoiding indoor events unless for some miraculous reason there is an effective quick test that can be taken to ensure safety.

Not sure about outdoor ones either, people seem to think you can’t catch it outdoors so very few masks or SD.

I’d rather we got case numbers down so will continue as we are amd hope that the nhs starts to be able to treat all the delayed patients.

Biscuitsneeded · 13/02/2021 18:57

I AM cross though - cross that a load of whinging, over-entitled woman-children would jeopardise the return of the industry I love, and which is the life-blood some of my favourite people, over the wearing a piece of fabric on their face! Nobody likes it - I certainly would prefer not to - but it's such a ridiculous thing to make a fuss about when livelihoods are at stake. I just wish people would be less selfish.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/02/2021 18:59

If vaccinated yes, I’ll go completely back to normal if I can! I’m done with all this shite.

RedcurrantPuff · 13/02/2021 19:05

@CeeJay81

I'm suprised how many people are saying they'll go to indoor events with no mask. It'll be several years before theatres are open without measures such as masks. It'd be the perfect environment for the virus to thrive. Lots of people in an unventilated room. I'll be doing outdoor things mostly this year. If I go to any large events it'll be outdoors.
You have no idea what basis theatres will be able to open on any more than anyone else. You do realise that the pandemic will come to an end which means the virus stops spreading? Who would need to wear masks to prevent infection with a virus no one has not that they work anyway
FourTeaFallOut · 13/02/2021 19:05

Get knotted biscuit.

I would go wearing a mask but nobody owes their attendance under conditions they are not happy with. It's just tough luck if you don't like it. And it will be tough luck for the arts that fail during the limbo between lockdown and restriction free conditions. Life's not fair, etc.

PersonaNonGarter · 13/02/2021 19:24

Those fussing about a mask are being petty and ridiculous.

Why @Biscuitsneeded? Surely they just don’t like wearing masks? Which if fine, surely?

I am a bit baffled by the ‘woman up’ stuff about masks. Yes, I’ll wear a mask to the supermarket. Not sure why I have to sit with one on and pay for the experience though.

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 19:25

No, I think we’ll be wary for a while.

TheKeatingFive · 13/02/2021 19:26

I’d love to go to the theatre

I don’t have anything booked, but will if i get the chance

yeOldeTrout · 13/02/2021 19:29

I don't normally go to events like that, so probably not.
If chance arises & I want to go then I'll go... even if masks required.

There are other soc-distancing things I might not do, like constant hand hygiene.

GintyMcGinty · 13/02/2021 19:30

If its allowed I will be there with bells on.

Hotcuppatea · 13/02/2021 19:31

Yes. I have two tickets for Hamilton in June. Really hoping it goes ahead.

Madcatwoman68 · 13/02/2021 19:32

Yes
Would have no hesitation in going to theatres etc

Toorapid · 13/02/2021 19:35

Outdoors, yes, even accounting for short periods indoors for the loo etc.

I'm having my vaccine tomorrow, but I don't think that's changed my view.

Indoors still seems a step too far, but that will depend on the numbers. In our area, which was awful at the start of this lockdown, the rates are very encouraging.

RedPaperLantern · 13/02/2021 19:36

No. We’re not out of the woods yet and we won’t be until at least Xmas.

“Eat Out to Get Infected” was an entirely foreseeable disaster last year. Rushing back to events etc will just be not learning from that mistake.

We’re in territory we’re could could basically just piss the vaccines up against a wall. With the level of transmission that would follow from resumption of large scale events (even with vaccination) there is so much scope for new mutations that can outrun the vaccines and we’re back to square one -or worse- before you know it.

Not seen it but a friend took her teenagers and they all loved it. 🤞 for you.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 13/02/2021 19:41

Yes, 100%. I would now, tonight, if I could. Indoor, outdoor, whatever.

Exactly. I love theatre, but we don’t earn enough to go as regularly as I’d like, and I’m damned if I’m paying for something I know I won’t enjoy. Contrary to the common assertion here, some of us can’t forget we’re wearing a mask after 5 minutes, and it would detract from my ability to concentrate on the performance.

DP and I are Barbican members and will continue to support them and other venues financially as much as we can, even if we’re unable to attend in person for the foreseeable.

Rockbird · 13/02/2021 19:52

I've got a rescheduled book tour and a concert to go to in the autumn. I'll go in a wetsuit and snorkel as long as I can go. Happy to wear a mask although it might inhibit the loud singing a bit.

Radio4Rocks · 13/02/2021 19:56

Yes as long as they are socially distanced and masks compulsory if indoors.

caringcarer · 13/02/2021 20:01

DH and I have tickets for Cricket rolled over from last year. If allowed we will go.amd wear mask. It is outside so reasonably safe.
