Who would offer their kids to be tested on?

Just saw this article and I'm curious to find out what your opinion is. I wouldn't volunteer my 6 year old to be tested on.

No way!

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 12:35

There’s another thread on this already.
For the record, yes, we would.
If people hadn’t done so in the past, none of our children would have been vaccinated against once common diseases.

spongebob1000 · 13/02/2021 12:36

Just saw the article pop up on Apple News so didn't know there was another thread.

And you are right about that but still wouldn't offer my 6 year old to be a guinea pig.

And when you say "we" - who is "we"?

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 12:37

Would you be happy to accept an approved vaccine that had been tested on other children?

spongebob1000 · 13/02/2021 12:39

Well my son has all vaccines up to date but wouldn't use him for an experimental vaccine. That's for sure

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 12:39

We = my husband and I, we agree.

AubergineDream · 13/02/2021 12:39

I think I probably would yes. It would make me very anxious though

Itsjustricemichael · 13/02/2021 12:39

Thread in AIBU. If you want to find out more about / sign up for the trials to check the efficiency of the vaccine in 6 and older children link is above.

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 12:39

You’re decision, of course.

Crumpetycrump · 13/02/2021 12:40

My 17 year old D’s wants to volunteer.

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 12:40

Your

spongebob1000 · 13/02/2021 12:41

If the child is old enough to understand what this entails then 100% I agree but I wouldn't be comfortable making this decision for my 6 year old.
I would allow my child to make his own decision if he's old enough.

I wouldn't, but I admire you. And if it ever came to it and you did it, then I would be very grateful that you had made that choice for the greater good.

It's not something I could do, although I have let one of my children have un-listed drugs when she was younger to treat her reflux (but obviously that was for her own gain as she couldn't drink any milk, so ...to me it was worth it ) .... but I couldn't do this with a vaccine.
I respect that you can though and if maybe it happens and you do it then , you would be potentially impacting the lives of vulnerable children who would want / need the vaccine.

TheChaser · 13/02/2021 12:42

Not a chance.

So who do you think they tested it on?
spongebob1000 · 13/02/2021 12:45

Well unfortunately I was naive enough to think they wouldn't ask parents to make such decisions. What if that child suffers badly from it? Would you be able to live with it?
I wouldn't.

I'm grateful to those that will take these risks I honestly am.

They have to test them on someone. And who else can they ask but the parents with responsibility for the child?
Itsjustricemichael · 13/02/2021 12:53

Well we have the safety data from adults already so it's not like testing something completely unknown. We do need information on whether children will produce a strong enough immune response from the vaccine.
I'm the kind of person who takes out a Which subscription to try and decide my DS's car seat and I would talk to DS about it and want to find out more about it but I would be open to signing up if we were in an area it was available.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 13/02/2021 12:56

My suspicion is that it'll be children who are CEV and have more to lose by getting covid then having a most likely exceptionally safe vaccine that's already been used on millions of adults.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 13/02/2021 12:57

As it happens I have a 18.5yr old who is CEV and waiting for his jab. If he were under 18 I'd definitely allow him to be tested on.

Iamclearlyamug · 13/02/2021 13:01

Unfortunately my phone blocks the link - otherwise I’d have been interested in finding out more

Stressedoutsomuch · 13/02/2021 13:10

No I wouldn’t.

My kids are fully vaccinated but I wouldn’t use them to be tested on. And tbh no one should.

It’s not too long ago some children developed life limiting narcolepsy from the swine flu vaccine which had already been tested so to willingly take the chance of the unknown is really not fair on the child as they literally will not understand the consequences if it goes wrong. If my teenager wanted to do it I’d have no problem with that.

I’m really surprised if that this is happening tbh.
