Early years workers getting the vaccine now

Catlover10 · 12/02/2021 10:25

My boyfriend has just been told today he can book himself the vaccine through his work (he works in a private nursery in England). Some of the more senior members there have booked theirs today. Just wondered if anybody knew anything about this?? It doesn’t affect me as I don’t work but obviously it’s good my partner is getting it as he can’t distance from the children at all. I’m guessing all teachers will fall under this “health and social care” bracket now and be offered the vaccine over the next couple of weeks?

@huggzy , I don't think a lot of people realise how exposed we are (or feel). I understand this belief that Nurseries are safe places, still doesn't make me feel any better when I'm heading into work!

Juanbablo · 15/02/2021 08:58

Our local authority have said it doesn't apply to us yet.

Lubiluxe · 15/02/2021 09:01

Unfortunately the system didn't limit the online booking slots to carers for vulnerable children and cheeky fuckers have taken full advantage
This is really rude.
Something got leaked and many well known bodies were encouraging people to book them. You cannot possibly say they are taking advantage.

For what its worth, I have a couple of vaccinators in the family and they've all agreed we ARE entitled and you wouldn't get judged by them.

Even 119 were saying yes.

I haven't booked one myself and I probably won't now that things are more mixed but I do not blame those who booked on Friday at all.

Lubiluxe · 15/02/2021 09:03

Oh also, I'm not in nursery but a nanny working for about 6 families, I have pregnant employers who can't have the vaccine themselves. I feel worried every week about all the mixing. Many of them go to nursery too. And as for people saying nurseries are safe. 12 cases in 1 week at a local nursery and 11 in another. It spreads like wildfire. Why can't people see that it is putting us at risk?

The clinically vulnerable have been vaccinated havent they?

needadvice54321 · 15/02/2021 09:05

@Lubiluxe , not the clinically vulnerable but the extremely vulnerable have I believe.

My DH is clinically vulnerable due to a heart condition. He us group 6 and hasn't been done yet. Neither was he on a shielding list. But he is at higher risk of serious illness.

The clinically extremely vulnerable have been done.

**I can only go by my experience, but I haven’t vaccinated any council employees working from home.

I don't suppose they would have volunteered that information to you.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 15/02/2021 09:15

Lots of council employees working in office on a rota so officially still in work rather then home. Only 1 day out of 5 though

huggzy · 15/02/2021 09:18

Can't believe people are being called cheeky fuckers for wanting to keep themselves safe! They're going to work every day with no protection, they've spent several months scared and anxious, can you really blame them?

If all my colleagues had managed to book vaccines without issue I'd have done the same. I'd have assumed that if they weren't entitled they wouldn't have been able to book. It's not their fault the system/ call handlers allowed it!

KatherineOfGaunt · 15/02/2021 09:56

I'm a council employee, SEN teacher. No hint of vaccine here.

That's so wrong. I work in special schools, not even a pupil facing role and I had mine 2.5 weeks ago! The disparity is wrong.
KatherineOfGaunt · 15/02/2021 10:05

It's a postcode lottery. I'm not in the right place, clearly.

BarbaraofKent · 15/02/2021 10:09

It's a total postcode lottery. I work in a special school and got mine a couple of weeks ago, I know a few who got one before that, and I know some LAs are not opening it to SEN staff at the moment.

I know someone who works for the NHS entirely from home and was one of the first to get the vaccine, but then I'm not going to pass judgement because I'm sure there are people who think that, as a healthy youngish person who has already had Covid and was fine, I shouldn't have 'jumped the queue' either!

supersonicginandtonic · 15/02/2021 10:18

What worries me more is that prison staff and police aren't being vaccinated. Especially prison staff. If somebody tests positive in a nursery or svjool every body isolates at home. Prison officers have to go in and work with the people who have tested positive. A lot of these offenders are spitting at and coughing on the staff. I really feel for them.

Can't you just book @KatherineOfGaunt ? Take some evidence that you work with SEN children?

Disgusting isn't it, I just don't understand some of the logic that has gone behind working out who should get the vaccine based on their job
loretta81 · 15/02/2021 10:38

Was thrilled today to find my son's room leader off because she's feeling a bit under the weather after her vaccination (obviously not happy she feels bad, but really pleased she's been vaccinated). Apparently they've all had it. How can this be a bad thing? Vaccinations moving at a pace here - my husband is group 6 and he had his on Friday. I'm group 6 too and I haven't been called yet, and of course, I felt some jealousy. But I think it's going so well and so fast that there will be enough for all of us in the coming weeks and months.

Changechangychange · 15/02/2021 10:39

They aren’t cheeky fuckers. They were told they were entitled to a jab. Phoned 119 and confirmed they were entitled. So booked it, went along to have the jab, and weren’t turned away then either. How are they supposed to know that actually, des the vaccine centre telling them they can have one, they actually shouldn’t have had it?

Yes be annoyed at the postcode lottery, the confusion about who is and isn’t entitled, the lack of clear messaging, the bandwagon jumping by their employers. It’s not the employees’ fault, they are just doing what they have been told is correct.

Baileysforchristmas · 15/02/2021 10:58

My friends daughter works in a nursery, she’s 18, no health issues at all, very healthy, she’s getting her vaccine today. My husband has had a stroke a few years ago, he has asthma, hospitalised a couple of times, 57, slightly over weight, no sign of a vaccine yet, it does seem a bit back to front system sometimes but I also think the more people that our vaccinated the safer everyone is.

Frazzledmum55 · 15/02/2021 10:58

I don’t think it is a postcode lottery. 119 told me they have the go ahead for early years. They didn’t ask what area I live in.

huggzy · 15/02/2021 11:16

Not so much a postcode lottery but it must depend who you speak to. Some were told yes on the phone and others told no. Some were told yes then got their vaccine, others told yes then turned away on the day.

100% agree that it is the employers at fault here, and it is them my anger is directed towards. At the point someone is in front of me, I can't go and grab someone off the street who is higher up the priority list, and so at that moment the best thing I can do is vaccinate them and think of the bigger picture. We do all need to be vaccinated.

But let's be really clear here. Employers might have told people to lie and say they come under social care, but an employer sanctioned lie is still not OK.

Useruseruserusee · 15/02/2021 11:35

@RosesforMama

Interesting. I am an educational psychologist, work with SEN children all the time of course, it's the core client group. We apparently have no priority. We are hcpc registered but aren't frontline health or social care. It's confusing. I want to get back to seeing children.
My school employs a private Ed psych. He was in seeing the children all through the autumn term and we managed to get two EHCPs awarded. He doesn’t qualify for a vaccine.

The SALTs refused to come in but have been vaccinated. I’ve sat next to children having virtual SALT assessments and it’s just not good enough.

Spikeyball · 15/02/2021 11:58

Sen staff are not getting it here but ds's PA who has been furloughed since last March can get it because she is technically still employed by us. I don't begrudge her being able to get it but it is wrong that those in direct contact with my son cannot.

KatherineOfGaunt · 15/02/2021 12:35

It is a postcode lottery as far as SEN staff in some councils have been told to get theirs and those in others haven't. It seems to be down to the choice of the council, thus a postcode lottery.

I'm happy to wait, but it needs to be a national thing, not just a case of which councils choose to.
