Early years workers getting the vaccine now

Catlover10 · 12/02/2021 10:25

My boyfriend has just been told today he can book himself the vaccine through his work (he works in a private nursery in England). Some of the more senior members there have booked theirs today. Just wondered if anybody knew anything about this?? It doesn’t affect me as I don’t work but obviously it’s good my partner is getting it as he can’t distance from the children at all. I’m guessing all teachers will fall under this “health and social care” bracket now and be offered the vaccine over the next couple of weeks?
@Kitcat122 Are you not now eligible?! I thought all people who work in SEN were now able to book? That's appalling
Most of our mainstream infant classes have at least one child who are SEND and a some have children who need personal care, even if not SEN, such as help changing after a toileting issues.

We are mainstream and not eligible.

So it doesn't appear to be a country wide decision.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 12/02/2021 17:05

I'm an early years worker, we've been told that the government are reviewing today and hopefully we will be able to get a vaccine very soon. Think some LA's have already said yes, not mine yet, fingers crossed it will be national soon.

xLISAx · 12/02/2021 17:36

Yes if you read the government careers list for social care it lists nursery staff on there.

Frazzledmum55 · 12/02/2021 18:02

@xLISAx Do you have a link for that please? I’ve booked mine but my manager is now saying there’s been a mix up and we should cancel our appointments as we’re not actually eligible.

Bonkerz · 12/02/2021 18:12

Pacey and childcare.co.uk have issues statuses that this is not the case and early years workers who have managed to book will be cancelled or turned away at appointment.

ssd · 12/02/2021 18:19

So if your job is listed as being within the above guidelines for social care you can book a vaccine, in Scotland is that correct?

CrackOpenTheGin · 12/02/2021 18:30

Can Nanny’s book a vaccine?

needadvice54321 · 12/02/2021 18:37

@ssd

So if your job is listed as being within the above guidelines for social care you can book a vaccine, in Scotland is that correct?
I think that's the issue, Nursery workers were wrongly added to that list. So no they aren't entitled
manicinsomniac · 12/02/2021 18:42

The reason why teachers are not prioritised is, as far as I understand it, very simple: it won't have any effect on bringing down hospital admissions and death figures.

Nobody is being vaccinated for their own sake. They are being vaccinated for The sake of the country as a whole. So those at the top of the list are a) likely to be very ill or die of they catch it or b) in regular close contact with those who are likely to be very ill or die if they catch it.

Teachers (except older, vulnerable or special school staff) are neither of those things. The three groups in brackets are already on the list.

I think it's correct not to further prioritise the rest of us. There's no benefit except to us as individuals. I'll be really upset if groups 5 and 6 get pushed further down the list for education staff. Seems very wrong that I should have it before my cv mum in her 60s.

manicinsomniac · 12/02/2021 18:43

Early workers shouldn't be on it because the children they care for are not vulnerable. Those who care for people with disabilities or elderly people are on the lust both the same of their service users, not themselves.

nannynick · 12/02/2021 18:55

I cannot find the original source of the information. The National Careers page which some reference was saying the same thing back in March 2020 (Looking at WaybackMachine) so it's not recently been updated.

DfE have told ChildcareCoUk that the National Careers Service list should not be used to prioritise staff for Covid-19 vaccine.
www.childcare.co.uk/news/confusion-over-early-years-vaccine-priorities

I therefore wonder if the Standard Operating Procedure document for vaccine deployment will be updated, or not.

Will be interesting to see if people who have managed to book get turned away from the vaccine centre when they are asked about their job role.

Frazzledmum55 · 12/02/2021 20:23

119 have advised that early years workers can currently book. Whether further guidance will be issued to clear up the confusion, and that might change, I don’t know. But as it stands, they can.
They said teachers can not. The only reason I can think of for that is early years staff have much closer and more intimate contact with children.

Frazzledmum55 · 12/02/2021 20:26

The document above should not be used for vaccination priority.
There is specific documents for that but it’s very vague and just says ‘social care worker.
I think this is the document, but there’s another one too I read earlier.

huggzy · 12/02/2021 20:31

From what I can gather some early years staff have managed to book vaccines- some areas are allowing it but others aren't. I don't think early years staff are actually meant to be included. But as a nursery nurse, if I find I can book a vaccine in my area I probably will!

I have read about some people booking theirs then having them cancelled, or being told that they'll be turned away from vaccination centres despite having appointments.

IrisPurple · 12/02/2021 20:41

The hospital where I work regularly invites staff to pass on booking details to our personal contacts - as long as they fit into the top 4 categories. Full details are given on who is eligable. Unfortunately teachers and nursery staff definitely do not fit into these categories.
I strongly feel they should however, and I am very happy to hear that some staff are managing to get their vaccine Grin

TheHateIsNotGood · 12/02/2021 20:57

However, whenever, whoever you are and you get an invite to vax take it. None of us are more important than anyone else, the roll-out will be sporadic. Even if you have been vaxxed, it doesn't mean you can't spread it, just you're way less likely to be hospitalized if you get cv19.

Just hunker down and wait, we'll all get our turn - no good complaining about it, just wait and sooner than you think, it will be your turn.

Alwaysready · 12/02/2021 21:01

Sen school here- weve just been told we can be vaccinated!

HazeyJaneII · 12/02/2021 21:03

@TheHateIsNotGood
no good complaining about it
On the whole I agree, however I am appalled that people with mild to moderate learning disabilities are not in a priority group at all, despite being at much higher risk of dying of Covid...we should all be complaining about that.

wintertravel1980 · 12/02/2021 21:08

Early years workers who have managed to book will be cancelled or turned away at appointment.

From the practical standpoint, I very much doubt it will happen.

A few of my colleagues volunteer at vaccination sites (in London) and they constantly struggle with no shows.

At the end of the day they are happy to vaccinate everyone who happens to be around. If it is early years workers, good for them!

Boulshired · 12/02/2021 21:08

At present there is a gap were some hubs left spaces for the over 70s and the letters getting to group 5. Last night the local fire fighters were called last minute to get vaccinated, they had previously done the same for teachers and TAs at my closest hub. Once the letters get received and the booking fills these groups will no longer be called.

RosesforMama · 12/02/2021 21:11

Interesting. I am an educational psychologist, work with SEN children all the time of course, it's the core client group. We apparently have no priority. We are hcpc registered but aren't frontline health or social care. It's confusing. I want to get back to seeing children.

Boulshired · 12/02/2021 21:22

I spoke to DS2 CAMHs psychologist yesterday and they have all had their jabs in her department.

Lostinspace23 · 12/02/2021 21:26

My sister works in early years and booked when advised to by her work. They did also say it might end up being cancelled but she’d had a confirmation so unless the turn her away on the day it seems unlikely. I hope for her sake she does get it.

TheHateIsNotGood · 12/02/2021 21:28

Hazey - we just have to wait, i'm an unpaid carer for ds19, if i go to hospital or die, big problems as it's just me and ds. And there's many more people with worse probs than us.

Thought I'd be waitin until April/May - the invite came today - if someone else needed it more than me than hopefully they've had it, if not I'd happily give my shot to someone else and wait a bit more.
