Early years workers getting the vaccine now

Catlover10 · 12/02/2021 10:25

My boyfriend has just been told today he can book himself the vaccine through his work (he works in a private nursery in England). Some of the more senior members there have booked theirs today. Just wondered if anybody knew anything about this?? It doesn’t affect me as I don’t work but obviously it’s good my partner is getting it as he can’t distance from the children at all. I’m guessing all teachers will fall under this “health and social care” bracket now and be offered the vaccine over the next couple of weeks?

Noone checks why you are there when you get there. If you have a booking they will jab you.

HazeyJaneII · 12/02/2021 21:37

I just don't understand how people with such poor health outcomes in general and at a higher risk of dying of Covid have been left out completely, it is appalling.

RosesforMama · 12/02/2021 21:41

@Boulshired

I spoke to DS2 CAMHs psychologist yesterday and they have all had their jabs in her department.
Yes camhs clinical psychs are in healthcare. We ed psychs are in education.

If you are on this list you are able to book now?

needadvice54321 · 12/02/2021 22:03

No @RosieLemonade , that seems to be the issue. Nursery workers were added to that list at some point and that's caused the confusion Sad

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 12/02/2021 22:08

National careers service have now issued a statement saying this list was not meant to be used for covid vaccine eligibility so no early years workers aren't eligible yet although some have managed to get an appointment today amidst the confusion.

Frazzledmum55 · 12/02/2021 22:19

As I said upthread, 119 are saying early years workers can book.

ssd · 12/02/2021 22:31

What's 119

ssd · 12/02/2021 22:37

Just googled it

howdidigettobe50something · 12/02/2021 22:38

I think this is very much LA based. Educational psychologists have been vaccinated along with social care staff locally.

WineInTheWillows · 12/02/2021 22:42

Oh, fabulous. I very much hope so. DD is due to start nursery next month and it'll be such a load off my mind if the adults she is with have been vaccinated.

MrsBooks · 12/02/2021 22:45

This is really interesting. I called 119 earlier after my manager told me I could book my jab, and they told me I couldn't book as I'm not in health and social care - I work in a preschool. 2 others from my preschool have booked theirs also through 119 with no issues.

KatherineOfGaunt · 12/02/2021 22:58

That list makes no sense for vaccinations. I'm an SEN teacher so not on that list, but apparently the Communication Support Workers who work with some of our children would be eligible - in the same setting and working with the children in the same way.

I wish the government would just issue a list and stick to it. Some nursery staff and some SEN staff being offered it by their council but others not is ridiculous. (I'm not taking about leftover doses but booked slots.)

Really? I don't know of any EPs who have been prioritised (outside of CEV colleagues of course).
manicinsomniac · 12/02/2021 23:11

Hazey - sorry, this is slightly off topic but would you mind explaining why people with mild learning difficulties are more at risk of dying of Covid? This worries me because that does include a huge numer of school children in mainstream schools and, at the moment, almost all children are being classed as very low risk. Or is it only adults that have a higher risk?

Dizzybintess · 12/02/2021 23:15
@Kitcat122 Are you not now eligible?! I thought all people who work in SEN were now able to book? That's appalling
I work in SEN and I have had it as I provide personal care. Any staff members who don't do toiletting are not eligible! That includes staff who deal with behaviours like spitting etc staff who provide feeding or changing of feeding tubes are also not included, its insanity.

We had a frightening amount of cases at my school.

needadvice54321 · 12/02/2021 23:23

It's mind boggling @Dizzybintess

HazeyJaneII · 12/02/2021 23:28

@manicinsomniac

It is specifically people with Learning Disabilities as opposed to learning difficulties (Learning Disabilities meaning having intellectual impairments as opposed to learning difficulties which present obstacles to learning e.g. dyslexia, but does not affect IQ) - people from 18 upwards have a higher risk of death from Covid. People with severe and profound LDs have been included in group 6 - but it has neen shown that people with mild to moderate LDs are also at higher risk (see this Nursing Times Article www.nursingtimes.net/news/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine-policy-for-people-with-learning-disabilities-unfair-26-01-2021/)
Overall people (including children) with learning disabilities have poorer health outcomes when hospitalised, in general, with 1,200 people with a learning disability dying avoidably every year. Mencap started a campaign called Treat Me Well - with more information about the complex reasons behind this, and how things can be improved www.mencap.org.uk/get-involved/campaign-mencap/treat-me-well

manicinsomniac · 12/02/2021 23:44

Thank you, Hazey . I misread disabilities as difficulties. But still, I didn't realise outcomes were so poor in general for people with learning disabilities Sad

HunkyPunk · 13/02/2021 01:27

I work in an SEN EY setting and have been contacted today (by email) by the LA to book an appt. for the vaccine. Staff names were put forward by the setting, and we have also been provided with an online letter from our manager confirming our role which will have to be produced on the day of the appt.

According to our LA, there is a new system in operation for 2 weeks from 11th Feb, whereby (among other categories) social care workers working with children who are considered priority within the context of the JCVI priority cohorts 1-9 (children under 16 who have underlying health conditions leading to greater risk of disease or mortality) can book directly via the National Booking service, for which a link is provided in the email. It doesn't seem to indicate that all EY staff are eligible. Not sure why the time limit, or how you would book after that.

year5teacher · 13/02/2021 07:13

EYFS is a totally different ball game to say, UKS2. I have worked in EYFS for years and there is absolutely zero possibility of social distancing, not to mention the intimate care. At least mine understand that they shouldn’t come up and rub my face and then sneeze on me - really hope all EYFS staff and those working with SEN are vaccinated ASAP.

huggzy · 13/02/2021 15:51

Just been reading how some early eats staff who booked yesterday have had their vaccines done today with no problems, whose others have been turned away at the test centres. Some even called to check they were definitely eligible and were told yes, only be be told no when they arrived.

huggzy · 13/02/2021 15:53

Dear me, ignore all the autocorrects, sorry! 🙄

Frazzledmum55 · 13/02/2021 16:13

They don’t ask when you arrive though. Just take your booking reference, medical questions and jab you so I don’t see why anyone would be turned away. I had mine with no issues or questions asked.

huggzy · 13/02/2021 16:22

I've read about some who were asked their job, had to show payslips as proof, and have their vaccine done.... then others being asked their job and turned away. Obviously depends where you go.
