Howdy all. I'm in Melbourne, and it's just been announced that we're back in Stage 4 lockdown from midnight. It's because of some coronavirus cases in a quarantine hotel at the airport.

We've done this before, and everyone was saying "You've got this, Melbourne!" and telling us how awesome we were. But we've been so awesome for so long, and we're all so tired of this. I think most Australians are prepared to do masks and practical precautions for the long term, but these sudden hits to work, school and social life are hard to bear. I couldn't see my family in Sydney this past Xmas because the border was closed.

Hand-hold, anyone? I'll be OK tomorrow. Just in despair now.

I’m in Melbourne too and I’m trying to keep it in perspective. It’s a short lockdown that will hopefully prevent a longer one. I think it’s hard to get in the right mindset after last year, the announcement brought back a lot of feelings I hadn’t felt in a while! Hopefully this will prevent a repeat of months of lockdown.

Talltower, I think that’s a bit harsh to the OP. We spent months in strict lockdown last year. My kids missed half a year of school. I think most of us in Australia are very sympathetic to what is going on in the UK and the rest of the world. Obviously what we are going through now is not the same as in the UK (we are lucky), but it’s hard mentally to have the ups and downs and the unknown of what will happen if the virus isn’t contained in time.

Sheepies · 12/02/2021 05:29

Trying to be sympathetic, I hate race to the bottom mentality, but it's 5 days, honestly can't muster it.

TallTowerFan · 12/02/2021 05:30

@TwiceAsNice22 I wasn't harsh , just honest.

There will be very little sympathy here , and many will feel goaded by the op due to the situation here right now.

LunaTheCat · 12/02/2021 05:33

groovergirl - waves across “The Ditch” from New Zealand. So gutted for you. Take care.
For those in the UK I feel for you so much - there is not a day goes by that I don’t think of you, my beautiful extended family back in UK.

Remaker · 12/02/2021 05:40

I’m in Sydney and I agree this is not the place to complain about 5 days of lockdown. While the conditions of Victoria’s lockdown were strict last year, your experience is nowhere near what’s happening in the UK. The prevalence of the virus, the death rate, the school closures. It’s a few days at home.

There a Vic corona support thread

Thedramasummer · 12/02/2021 05:46

There are plenty of Aussies on this site so complain away!

I know it’s hard to believe it will only be 5 days given what happened last year with VICs lockdown, but I think all the recently lockdowns in Aus have been short and sharp.
I believe lessons have been learned from what has happened throughout the year and they have a good handle on the tracking of cases now.

Plus if you believe what half the people say on here, Australian summer stops coronavirus in its tracks!

StartupRepair · 12/02/2021 05:52

I get that 5 days sounds like nothing. It's just 5 days when we haven't processed the brutal months we did last year.

Neenan · 12/02/2021 05:58

@timeisnotaline

I’m in melbourne. It’s 5 days. It’s crappy but isn’t it a bit insensitive to choose to complain about this on a uk site? I know how much tougher it’s been on my friends there.
Agreed.

And we have thousands of deaths a week to boot. It’s not a misery olympics but really not the right place for the OP to look for a handhold.

3littlewords · 12/02/2021 06:02

Forgive me for asking but what's the point in a 3 or 5 day lockdown? Does everybody get tested during this time? People who are unknowingly Infected could still be harbouring the virus during the 3 or 5 days then go out and spread it on day 6

Contradictory much.

Unless you went through the last Melbourne lockdown you know fuck all.

Hopeful circuit breaker.

There will be a review by Wednesday so it's by no means over.

@TallTowerFan

I'm sorry that you're struggling op , but you won't find much sympathy on here , a UK site.

We've been in lockdown (this time around) for over a month. The weather is shit , a lot of us are home schooling and/or trying to keep toddlers entertained whilst living in flats with no outdoor space.

Unless you did the Melbourne lockdown, you know zip.

Educate yourself.

You need the context - we have 13 cases in a city of 4 million people , nearly all from hotel quarantine or staff there and have been in isolation prior to testing positive, so the community spread opportunities are limited. So 5 days is the hope of catching any community spread before it happens, and being able to isolate contacts for any cases that happen as they won’t have been anywhere. So most of us feel absolutely confident going to the supermarket etc or sending our toddlers to childcare/grandparents that if we distance in the supermarket, we won’t catch it. Unlike the uk.
3littlewords · 12/02/2021 06:09

Fact still remains that people could still be infectious on day 6 and spread it. Clearly I'm missing something here Confused

Sheepies · 12/02/2021 06:10

I was surprised that Oz doesn't start vaccinations until next week. Having such fantastically low numbers through the effort of the gov and more importantly its citizens, surely they'd have wanted them asap to help stay low?

It gives the Heath teams a bit of breathing space for tracing where each positive case has been with dates and times and allows for the information to be distributed. It then allows people to get tested with results.

The known contacts of positive cases will already be aware and isolating for 14 days( and still require a negative test to leave quarantine)

After the lockdown has ended you should be aware if you have been somewhere at the same time as a positive case and hopefully been tested.

The low numbers of cases was why there was the immediate rush that other countries had to get the vaccine.

It’s only in the last few months that community spread has began to occur, which is down to the new variants of the virus I believe.

Hopefully won’t take too long for the country to be vaccinated.

Lampsoon · 12/02/2021 06:14

Blessex · 12/02/2021 06:14

Has the vaccination effort started yet in Australia?

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/02/2021 06:14

Presumably you did it. Which means you know zip about the UK lockdown. Unless you've been travelling between, which would make you an arsehole.

The effort were by states and territories, nothing to do with the federal government. The feds are in charge of vaccinations, hence the difference.
camelfinger · 12/02/2021 06:17

I think you’re fine to complain here. What’s particularly depressing is that you still need lockdowns after all the past restrictions - I can’t imagine ever getting to that situation in the UK and people would definitely not respond to a 5 day lockdown over here, especially if things had started to go back to normal. Hope you get the vaccines rolled out soon, that’s our only hope in the UK.
