For those anti mushy peas (and I think you are all very odd) try pea wet ?🤣

Soontobe60 · 09/02/2021 14:29

Chips, gravy and a pea fritter on a barm. Food of the gods. It’s the northern cure for the Kent variant.

Nellodee · 09/02/2021 14:30

@MaxNormal

Is "unfortunately" the new "sadly" or "I'm afraid"?
Oh piss off. If you don’t think it’s unfortunate that we’re getting a bunch of mutations arising simultaneously around the globe that are beneficial to this virus spreading and deplete the efficacy of vaccines then unfortunately you’re a moron.
juggler82 · 09/02/2021 14:37

It's mutated the same way, so it's not adding to the already existing problem. No need to call anyone a moron.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2021 14:42

Kent + Eeek = Manchester / Liverpool / Bristol / insert latest local discovery.

(Where Kent = B 1. 1. 7 mutation and Eeek = E484K mutation)

There is no place for peas of any description in my life.
juggler82 · 09/02/2021 14:50

Maybe I should've said not adding much more to an already existing issue. It'll be covered under the same 'vaccine tweak' as the SA varient. Still no need to call anyone a moron.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/02/2021 14:50

@Devlesko

Actually it's chips, gravy and mushy peas, why do they eat them dry down south? Give me something moist with my chips.
We do put something moist on our chips down south. It's called aioli, you savages.

Actually I miss Liverpool chips.

EmergencyHydrangea · 09/02/2021 14:53

Viruses mutate, news at eleven.

how posh are you though?

tomato sauce!

Snowsnowglorioussnow · 09/02/2021 14:56

The only concern I have - is that I thought this variant had already got to the whole UK?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 09/02/2021 14:57

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady

Honestly, it feels like people are busily searching the internet for "bad news", posting it on here and then sitting back and gleefully rubbing their hands together.

At least post balanced articles rather than this scaremongering bullshit!

Well said ❤
CoffeeandCroissant · 09/02/2021 15:06

At least post balanced articles rather than this scaremongering bullshit.

Who is pointing scaremongering bullshit? The article posted by the OP is from the Manchester local paper and mainly telling people about the relevant postcodes where residents should get tested. Another post links to an article from an academic orientated news website, my posts linked to the BMJ, the Science Media Centre and the University of Kent.

None of these are in any way shape or form 'scaremongering bullshit'. Although it's obvious from the replies that most people haven't even bothered to read them. Hmm

CoffeeandCroissant · 09/02/2021 15:07

pointing = posting Damn autocarrot! Grin

Fembot123 · 09/02/2021 15:08

@x2boys

@JS87

There is plenty of evidence out there. I just don't have time to find it for everyone. There is the J&J phase III trial, there is a study from Cambridge university, the AZ study in the news yesterday, a study from Pfizer in the news yesterday. www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/pfizer-biontech-vaccine-likely-to-be-effective-against-b117-strain-of-sars-cov-2 However, whilst I am being slated for not listing all the data that is out there nobody is slating the posters who obviously didn't read the article which the OP gave a link for. I mainly wanted to say that it wasn't about the "kent variant" but about the "kent variant with an E484K mutation". Actually I am an immunologist so I have read a lot of the data coming out and do understand it.
Then you understand that though the vaccines tested have a slightly reduced effectiveness in reducing infections. The still will work.

Also they still prevent hospitalisation and death. Due to various other processes at work. That also includes the AZ vaccine before you try that crap.

Yesterday the whole story of the SA variant and AZ was completely stupid media hype.

Katie517 · 09/02/2021 15:08

Stop scaremongering FFS! The virus has been mutating since this time last year but we just weren’t obsessed with looking for variants. This is the new thing for the next month or so until they move onto something else. It’s not bad news it’s just what viruses do. If we could not have a scaremongering thread everytime they happen to find one that would be great!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 09/02/2021 15:14

😯 oh no. Let's panic😱

That is far comment. I didn't.

I am way to pissed off after all the crap we had posted yesterday. So just hoovering up the posters that are spouting obvious rubbish today.

Should probably put more effort into it🤷‍♀️

Fembot123 · 09/02/2021 15:19

‘Hoovering up’ 😂😂😂

JS87 · 09/02/2021 15:21

Actually we don't yet know if the AZ vaccine prevents hospitalisations and deaths. We hope it will but the trial didn't answer that question. The median age of the participants was 31 and there were no cases of severe disease or hospitalisations in the placebo group either. It is entirely possible that it will prevent it but the trial didn't answer the question due to the age of the participants and number of participants so to date there is no evidence either way.

Just because you want them to work or there is a rationale for why they may work that doesn't mean we should use evidence based data or clinical trials to answer the question of whether they do work or not. It is hardly scaremongering to point out that they might not work. But that has been the problem with this whole pandemic; people not wanting to consider the evidence/possibility that things might not work out how they want. Even back at the beginning if you didn't think it would be over in a few months you were accused of scare mongering.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 09/02/2021 15:23

"Actually I am an immunologist so I have read a lot of the data coming out and do understand it."

Beamur · 09/02/2021 15:29

My understanding is that there have already been several mutations globally, although some have potentially more of an impact than others. But also that scientists are working on tweaks to the vaccine that will address this later in the year.
It's of interest but shouldn't unduly alarm people.

Sorry only bothered to read the first couple of sentences

The trial was barely a trial. They also didn't use the longer gap between doses that we know makes AZ more effective. They used a 4 week one. So it would have started at a lower point therefore producing lower results. I spotted that straight away and I'm not an expert like you. Scientists later confirmed that yesterday.

Also the way more serious infections are dealt with my the body is different to what they were studying. Not seen a single report saying the vaccine won't stop serious illness. They would however never say 100% it does until research is finished. That is as you know how the process works.

JS87 · 09/02/2021 15:45

Yes it was a 4 week gap but remember that is what most of the rest of the world is using as their schedule for the AZ vaccine. It was a phase i/II trial I think. They always have less participants than phase III trials.
Yes there aren't any reports saying that it doesn't stop serious illness but no-one has actually looked yet with the AZ vaccine in an appropriate cohort of people.
I'm not arguing that it won't be effective at all but I don't understand why you are trying to make the data say something it doesn't. We don't yet have the evidence. It probably will be effective against severe disease with the SA variant but we don't know yet. However, it was less effective at protecting against mild and moderate disease than they have shown in their trials against the original variants.

If it wasn't an issue at all they government wouldn't be sequencing swabs and asking people in areas where these variants come up to get tested. I'm not sure why everyone laid into the OP for stating that a new variant had been detected in Manchester.
