Is anyone actually going to follow the rules from spring?

It will have been a year since being allowed to properly see friends and family. Even in summer last year you still had to social distance so seeing family was difficult, and some areas had tighter restrictions throughout. Everyone I know is going to see family and friends from spring, regardless of what restrictions there are. I am too. The government do know that most people won’t stick to it from then, right?

Is anyone on here actually going to not see family at that point? I know Mumsnet seems to be full of people who are happy to isolate for years if need be, but are you actually going to?

Yes, of course. I don't want me or others to suffer.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2021 08:57

@louise4754

Genuine question.

If people aren't going to be following the rules won't restrictions get even tighter??

It raises the liklihood of further restrictions in the future yes.

Its the covid equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot just to prove a point.

Smart it is not.

@TheKeatingFive

Two further lockdowns has cost more than an extra six weeks on lockdown 1 would have done.

And how do you know that an extra six weeks on LD 1 would have solved it, or wouldn’t have broken the populace totally?

Numbers were low coming out of LD1. Foreign travel (and lack of quarantine) probably caused more damage than EOTHO. At least businesses got something out of this.

If you havent seen the writing in the wall for the NHS existing in its current form, then you’re very naive. It will need radical overhauling as we just cannot afford it any more.

How do you know it wouldn't have done?

Our numbers were not as low as scientists advised they should be at the point of unlocking and the data in the NW was plain to see. It is widely accepted it was at least two weeks early.

Again, please don't imply I am naive to the issues affecting the NHS. You know nothing about me, my area of work, my education etc.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 09/02/2021 08:58

I'm just going to answer the OP and not read 14 pages of the usual STFAH and "you selfish bastard this is why we are in this mess" bollocks.

No, we will not be following any rules. We are already seeing family and we are having a couple of friends over for drinks this weekend.

Cloudsurfing · 09/02/2021 08:59

There will always be new variants, that’s been said from the start. It’s what viruses do. At the moment we have vaccines that work on the new variants, even AZ. That’s enough for now. They’re already working on a booster for autumn. We cannot lockdown forever because we’re scared of new variants. We need to open up and let scientists sort the vaccines so we have a booster each year. That’s how flu vaccines work.

@Dongdingdong

“Long covid” is such an odd expression. When people get the flu they don’t get “long flu”. It’s just the fucking flu.
I think that'll be because covid isn't just the fucking 'flu.
StealthPolarBear · 09/02/2021 09:01

@Downriver

What about suffering from lockdown?
Cloudsurfing · 09/02/2021 09:01

@Sirzy

The lockdown measures are needed to protect the nhs.

Hospital numbers are still higher than they where at the peak last April.

We are so near the end we need to just keep going for that bit longer

I didn’t say end lockdown right now, my op was saying from spring, which was when the most vulnerable will have been vaccinated and our numbers should be lower than now.

People who don’t follow the rules are partly responsible for this endless situation. Most people I know are strictly following the rules and I can’t see this changing.

which is why COVID is so much more SERIOUS than the fucking flu!

"Long Covid" means the persistence of debilitating physical symptoms long after the infection is over.

It leaves large numbers of people who have had it VERY seriously impaired for what might be YEARS. We know it can affect people for months - I know two people who are still unable to function normally, having had it during the first wave, one is a GP with a young family who was previously fit, a runner. He struggles to breathe after even mild exercise.

Annamaywong25 · 09/02/2021 09:07

No, I'm at an age where I don't have time to spare, I begrudge the time I've lost not being able to see my very depressed children and not be able to help them through it. Enough now. There's a vaccine that seems to be working and it should be my turn soon. I'm the oldest in my family so once I'm done and the death rates are lower, that's me done with this shit.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 09/02/2021 09:08

I’m following the rules completely and I’m in Manchester so we’ve been in a very harsh lockdown for nearly a year. I want to protect the NHS and I don’t want to be a link in a chain which kills someone. My 14 yr old got Covid last year and he was extremely ill (no underlying conditions). It was horrible.

Dongdingdong · 09/02/2021 09:08

Yes, of course. I don't want me or others to suffer.

But who’s going to suffer exactly, when the most vulnerable groups have all been given their first dose of vaccine? Confused

ineedaholidaynow · 09/02/2021 09:09

At times haven’t we had the statistic in some parts of the country that 1 in 50 have COVID, that is a lot of people at risk of long COVID if a certain percentage of people with COVID get long COVID. In flu season do we have as many people having flu?

starfishmummy · 09/02/2021 09:10

We have a clinically extremely vulnerable young adult son so after keeping him safe all this time we are not suddenly going to start flouting the rules!!

We - as in our family - should all have have had our vaccines by the summer so if things ease up then maybe we will see people.

Dongdingdong · 09/02/2021 09:10

"Long Covid" means the persistence of debilitating physical symptoms long after the infection is over.

Yes I get that thank you. But the word “long” has never been applied to literally any other disease on earth, as far as I’m aware. It’s just an odd expression.

DinosaurDigestive · 09/02/2021 09:11

@dinglethedragon very well put.

The risk of long term covid is what is always in my head and so many people don't seem to realise and accept that it easily could happen to them. Any age and any degree of health can have this.

For anyone to still be thinking it is just a case of bad flu really, really needs to get their head out of the sand! But there's no telling some people....

Dongdingdong · 09/02/2021 09:13

I know about five people who’ve had Covid. All of them said it’s like a mild case of the flu. All are absolutely fine now with no signs of “long Covid”.

juliainthedeepwater · 09/02/2021 09:16

We will see vaccinated family and friends even if not “allowed” to - though would take tests first probably. Frankly I’ve used common sense above and beyond the diktats of this awful government throughout and will continue to do so.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2021 09:19

@speaksofty

Meanwhile in the next two weeks 200,000 people will be arriving through our airports and ports with no quarantine whatsoever with any number of possible variants with them....
1) We are not NZ. There are logistical reasons why the UK can not isolate in the same way. Its connected to geography.
  1. I take it you haven't seen the news this morning? As per my post upthread, it looks like we will be using our capacity to detect new variants when people enter the country since this is something we now have the capability to do (unlike many others).

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55989921
Covid: Two tests for all UK arrivals during quarantine

All travellers entering the UK will be required to take two coronavirus tests while quarantining in an attempt to prevent variants entering the country.

Arrivals will be required to get a test on days two and eight of their 10-day quarantine period, whether they are isolating at home or in a hotel.

The Department of Health said the move would enable authorities to track new cases more effectively.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock will set out more details in the Commons later.

Its not ideal, but the reality is its much more difficult for the uk to 'hide away' from the rest of the world than most other countries. Not least because 'Irish Border'.

@firstimemamma

Nearest family is 165 miles away so it's always going to be the government's decision for us as it depends on hotels opening. Wish I could just go and decide to see them, would see them tomorrow if I could!
Some hotels are open. Me and DH live 150 miles from my parents. Last month we went to see them as dad was dying and stayed in a Travelodge. They didn't even ask why we were staying there.

Household mixing might have a negative impact on schools staying open
Absolutely this.

@DappledOliveGroves

No. I've never agreed with lockdown. IMO liberty is of most fundamental importance, above and beyond 'safety'. This isn't living, this is Groundhog Day.
This. There will always be risks and most of them aren't related to COVID.
RaspberryCoulis · 09/02/2021 09:22

We're breaking the rules already. Kids are struggling very badly with not seeing anyone outside the house. Difficult to spend time outside when it's not been above 5c since Christmas. So we're allowing them to have the occasional friend round.

Covid is not the only thing which matters.
