Over 200,000 people will fly into the UK this week with no quarantine in place

Yet our schools are shut, businesses closed, population locked down and going frankly nuts

Yet you can still fly into Britain with no quarantine in place

This is unbelievable, why are we even bothering?

'how do you think new productions are getting made? Most broadcasters had run out of new content to air last June.'

Oh I don't know, perhaps film locally, stay resident at least in your own country? Y'know as we're in a pandemic where travel should be essential only. Lets face it I don't think it would have been a great disaster if death in paradise had been postponed.

It's like the 'influencers' in Dubai, some seem to think they are far more vital and important than the rest of us.

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 10:02

His Dark Materials set in Doncaster?

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 10:03

The Serpent filmed in Margate?

notimagain · 08/02/2021 10:07

@HelloMissus

When you arrive at the airport you’re basically told to self isolate when you reach your destination. No one asks how you’re getting to your destination. And no one checks when you’re there.
That's been the problem thoughout with the UK system..

I'd still like to see a citation for the 200,000 and more importantly a breakdown of who is travelling..it's not all people travelling on holidays - in fact I'd guess very little of it is now..

There's a bit of a temptation by some to label all travel, especially by air as being frivolous in the current circumstances and frankly that's naive.

I'm not going to get into the argument about where acting and TV fits into this but the UK needs people to fly in/out if the population wants the lights kept on, the internet to run, essential freight, and a million and one other things..

Deliaskis · 08/02/2021 10:08

@GetOffYourHighHorse

You have to provide evidence of a negative test before travel and you need to complete documentation stating forward address which can be checked. Not saying 100% of travellers get checked but there is a system in place.

I'd like to know why 200,000 people are travelling. All business can be done online. I mean what possible reasons could people have to go to another country. Weddings aren't allowed, funerals livestreamed.

This is simply not true. All business really can't be done online. I agree that many 'meetings' can be done online, but that isn't the nature of 'all business'. Hence my earlier post about people not really understanding the necessity of quite a lot of business travel.

@HelloMissus

His Dark Materials set in Doncaster?
Oh I didn't realise that all the scenery in His Dark Materials was actually real! There's me thinking CGI was used widely. Those dressed up polar bears were very well trained weren't they. Scenes from cittagazzee were filmed in Wales. Your production staff need to think a bit more creatively.

Look. When we are all home schooling, not allowed to mix households or to go on holiday it is ridiculous to hear about 'actors flying all over' as if there is no alternative. Use local staff and local actors. Take some responsibility rather than blaming government for not checking the irresponsible folk flying about.

canigooutyet · 08/02/2021 10:31

Some medical people travel around the world, not all their work can be done over the phone/online.

Those who work the Pipelines and rigs
Just off the top of my head.
Oh and haven't footballers and other sporting professionals been travelling?

And aren't school open to key workers and vulnerable? (well unless they are on holiday and even then I think they are staying open?)

GetOffYourHighHorse · 08/02/2021 10:38

'Some medical people travel around the world, not all their work can be done over the phone/online. Those who work the Pipelines and rigs'

Oh yes of course there are those travelling for essential reasons. Just international travel for influencers and actors isnt essential imo.

Dongdingdong · 08/02/2021 10:39

I wonder how many of the posters calling for border closures slammed Trump for closing the US borders almost a year ago?

Also, I distinctly remember posts on MN about 11 months ago saying it was too late to shut the borders, the horse had bolted. Those posters look rather silly now.

canigooutyet · 08/02/2021 10:41

If local talent was used for say Death in Paradise, what about the original cast members of the series, they would still need to be paid. CGI also costs. Would you be happy to pay double for that boxset or film?

Some reporters are still travelling, investigative journalism hasn't stopped.

MaxNormal · 08/02/2021 10:42

DH is travelling working on international sporting events. Funnily enough these can't all take place in the UK. In fact there's no work on whatever for him in the UK at the moment, if it wasn't for work abraod we'd be up shit creek.

Devlesko · 08/02/2021 10:44

At least you are beggining to see what a joke this is and how you are all being played.

I suppose the spaghetti junction in Birmingham could be fun, iced up for the Skeleton or similar 🤣

Yes like a lot of the population sadly. However if travel is essential only then how is 'working on sporting events' essential.

megletthesecond · 08/02/2021 11:01

It pisses me right off. Our government are shit. It should have been sorted last spring.

We need fewer people flying in and those who do should be put in an airport hotel for two weeks. From every country, even people from the UK.

lightand · 08/02/2021 11:04

I assumed that they would have got their act together, by say Sept. It hasnt happened. Cant see it happening now.
If they had had a jolly good discussion about it, I think lots of the population may have been won over.
But for reasons best known to themselves, that discussion has not been forthcoming.

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 11:09

HIs Dark Materials was filmed in four countries and cast and crew came from all around the world.

JoanOfArc8 · 08/02/2021 11:09

@ssd I absolutely agree with you, it’s quite staggering how there are still flights coming into the country and no proper checks going on regarding quarantine and then, going forward, there are only certain countries the new quarantine measures apply to! It’s nuts!

JoanOfArc8 · 08/02/2021 11:12

Although, as one of the scientists mentioned on GMB this morning, it’s a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, as even though there are known SA variants in certain areas, there are definitely going to be many more we’re unaware of, yet!

This should have been done immediately, early last year.

MaxNormal · 08/02/2021 11:15

@GetOffYourHighHorse because professional sporting events are continuing and he's allowed to travel for work.
Them's the rules.

Deliaskis · 08/02/2021 11:19

I'm not sure people realise that the countries that people are travelling to and from, in many cases also have exemptions for many work related journeys. In the past 6 months, DH has been in and out of I think 6 European countries and never quarantined. He's tested every time, both ways, but other countries do not all have a strict quarantine system in place for travel that is work related, as for the most part, this is deemed essential.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 08/02/2021 11:40

'Also, I distinctly remember posts on MN about 11 months ago saying it was too late to shut the borders, the horse had bolted. Those posters look rather silly now.'

The evidence 11 months ago was it was spreading widely in the community due to China not being transparent from the start so closing borders then would have been futile. The position we're in now (do you watch the news?) Is the numbers are down, it is under some sort of control. Therefore shipping variants in with unessential travel is of course a huge risk.

Testing before travel and forward address documenting then quarantine will help but as always in this shit situation people need to take some personal responsibility. I think a bit like 'local' we clearly need 'essential' spelling out.

lljkk · 08/02/2021 11:57

There was mention on radio yesterday about Joanna Lumley's production team went to the Outer Hebrides mid 2020... where they bumped into several other TV production teams like the ex-Top Gear gang.

There's so much covid here already. The people flying in have a lot less covid than us non-travellers have.

Deliaskis · 08/02/2021 11:59

@GetOffYourHighHorse it is spelled out.

Poorlykitten · 08/02/2021 12:03

@lightand India is very badly hit and so are parts of Africa.
