Over 200,000 people will fly into the UK this week with no quarantine in place

Yet our schools are shut, businesses closed, population locked down and going frankly nuts

Yet you can still fly into Britain with no quarantine in place

This is unbelievable, why are we even bothering?

@MaxNormal UAE doesn't have a failing economy or a strict lockdown and they're letting in a lot more flights than we are

In my opinion, European countries, and the Americas, are getting the virus worse than Asia, Australsia and African countries, as those 3 continents they have been exposed to the covid type virus more often in the past. Their immunity is better to it than ours.

Poorlykitten · 08/02/2021 08:43

@MaxNormal because other countries are being so lax and idiotic about having some level of quarantine, doesn’t mean it’s okay that we still don’t. Have you seen are numbers? It’s clearly not a great thing to have variants running rife around the country Hmm

MaxNormal · 08/02/2021 08:48

Poorlykitten which other countries have been lax and idiotic?

User133847 · 08/02/2021 08:49

This government have been a shambles with border control during this pandemic. 'Take back control of our borders' they said.

Poorlykitten · 08/02/2021 08:51

Clearly countries that have a strict policy for visitors are generally doing much better than countries that aren’t, it’s not tricky to realise that having lockdown procedures will make little difference if travellers are continuing to bring new variants in to the country.

User133847 · 08/02/2021 08:55

@MaxNormal

We are far from the only country that doesn't have hotel quarantine in place. I wish people would stop panicking and winding themselves and others up.
I wish people would stop traveling like this if it's not essential.
lightand · 08/02/2021 09:00

I have found it hard to take the government seriously, when they themselves are not doing all they can to stop the spread of the virus.

There is the advert about look me in the eye and tell me you are doing all you can. Well they themselves are not, so to me it weakens all they say. It makes me question them a lot more than I would have done if they had done, and do, tighter border controls.

Deliaskis · 08/02/2021 09:08

I agree stricter quarantine is needed and should have been imposed much much sooner. However, I think most people who don't travel for work don't often understand how much travel really is essential. DH regularly travels to fix, install and maintain machinery in food production factories all over the world. Others will be travelling to inspect factories in a whole range of locations to ensure all of the things we do actually need are produced according to the required standards. That's aside from necessary travel for e.g. military or humanitarian reasons. If there are only 200,000 people arriving this week, I would guess that many of them may well be travelling for essential reasons, and our not knowing what they are doesn't make them non-essential. Each and every one of us are probably in some way relying on somebody else's essential travel this week.

IrishMamaMia · 08/02/2021 09:10

It's pretty bat shit at this moment in time to have people arriving while we're locked in our homes and variants that threaten the vaccination programme are emerging. I don't think a long-term quarantine is doable but don't see why we can't have it until this lockdown ends!
If we're taking this path it's time to re-open schools and the majority of businesses.

MaxNormal · 08/02/2021 09:10

I wish people would stop traveling like this if it's not essential.

Most people at present are travelling for essential purposes, despite how the Mail etc have spun it to wind people up.

IrishMamaMia · 08/02/2021 09:16

I have a job that can be done in countries that are quarantining international travellers and have a sense of normality in place, if the idiots in charge continue to lock up normal people while letting people wander in with super strains of covid, I think it might seriously be time to consider emigration.
I want my children to have an education and want to enjoy the next few years.

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:21

As usual the government did not do any work to get quarantine up and running.
The hotel groups involved still haven’t been given basic information.
How many staff they’ll need to how many guests.
Are visitors allowed to leave their rooms.
What happens if someone just leaves.

Of course the hotel groups aren’t going to open themselves up without even basic agreed principles.

notimagain · 08/02/2021 09:34
  1. Can you gives us a citation for the 200,000 please?
  1. As for "no quarantine in place", actually there is....but as has been said it appears there aren't many checks beng made.
HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:39

There are NO checks.
I’ve got filming happening abroad so have various folk going out there and coming back.
They have all repeated NO checks.
And when I went out there, NO checks.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 08/02/2021 09:40

You have to provide evidence of a negative test before travel and you need to complete documentation stating forward address which can be checked. Not saying 100% of travellers get checked but there is a system in place.

I'd like to know why 200,000 people are travelling. All business can be done online. I mean what possible reasons could people have to go to another country. Weddings aren't allowed, funerals livestreamed.

There is definitely some immunity factors at play, which affect why certain countries and regions haven’t been as badly hit. However, median age of the population is also a reason (40 yrs in the UK, 30 yrs in UAE, 26 yrs in somewhere like India)

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:41

As I say, I’m producing a TV show abroad.
Actors, directors, crew are all flying out.
Then they come back.

TheCuriousMonkey · 08/02/2021 09:42

It is absolutely insane that I can't visit my mum 5 miles down the road, that my kids can't see their friends and cousins, that I will be yet again moving a holiday booked for Easter 2020 to maybe Easter 2022 etc etc but today many people will be arriving at Gatwick from around the world and then travelling across the country. Sure many will isolate, once they have reached their final destination. But some won't. And it isn't until next week that they will mandate quarantine hotels, and even then for only certain countries. Too little too late.

Point 2:

It’s like saying ‘we have seatbelt laws in place!’ but minimal enforcement of them in practice. They may as well not be there.

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:44

When you arrive at the airport you’re basically told to self isolate when you reach your destination.
No one asks how you’re getting to your destination. And no one checks when you’re there.

Circumlocutious · 08/02/2021 09:44

As I say, I’m producing a TV show abroad. Actors, directors, crew are all flying out. Then they come back.
It’s absurd that we have an economy where this is acceptable while millions of children are missing out on their education.
HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:49

Circum we test regularly on set. And we’re as cautious as we can be.
And I do insist everyone self isolate on return.

But the authorities don’t bother checking.

Why?? Journalists are usually resident locally to where they are reporting. I cannot see what 'TV show' other than the News is essential in lockdown.

'Actors flying about'. Jesus.Confused

HelloMissus · 08/02/2021 09:55

getoff how do you think new productions are getting made?
Most broadcasters had run out of new content to air last June.

Death in Paradise? Ralph Little didn’t walk to Guadeloupe (that’s not my show BTW just an example).

BigGreen · 08/02/2021 09:56

YANBU it's a fucking disgrace.
