Extending school term at end of July

That's not going to work. Another ridiculous idea. What about all those people that moved their cancelled holidays for 2020 by a year. Summer holidays may go ahead if vaccine roll out happens and who is going to cancel and lose their money - I'm not. Will be lots of absent children.

@pooiepooie25 doesn't sound vile at all. She sounds frustrated
@RuleWithAWoodenFoot I've not personally read that in the media.
Well if it means you're not reading the Daily Mail then I suppose that's a good thing.

TheMoth · 07/02/2021 20:55

Pretty sure pooiepooie25 doesn't speak to the kids like that. Although they have had kids speak to them like that.

palacegirl77 · 07/02/2021 20:56

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

if an experienced teacher tell me educationally it wouldnt be worth it

It really isn't. Children in primary schools are often 'gone' by 2pm. We teach English and maths in the mornings for a reason. We finish at 3.15 in normal times, and the time from 2.30 - 3.15 is often quite hellish for behaviour, let alone for learning.

Problem we have here is that the gov doesn't ask teachers - they might ask academy CEOs who they know to be on the Tory's side, but they don't care either.

I do get this. Even in my limited months of "teaching" my daughter every task has to be intersperced with something physical, fresh air or food!! Again, thats what we need to hear, actually professional opinions as to why its not a good idea. Comes across much better than "no, im not doing it they cant make me"
TheMoth · 07/02/2021 20:56

Sorry, *may have had.

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:57

@Pixxie7

It seems like the government can’t win, I admit they have made a lot of mistakes but the media is full of the psychological damage and concerns about children being disadvantaged because of COVID but as soon as they put any suggestions they are shot down in flames.
Because their suggestion is at the expense of school staff’s and their families.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 07/02/2021 20:58

Come on unions, let your members die. Dickheads, honestly.

TheyIsMyFamily · 07/02/2021 21:00

I'm a TA with three of my own. I will not be working over the holidays and my three will have their holiday time.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 07/02/2021 21:02

Why is everyone expected to be a hero?

Perhaps Daily Mail journalists could volunteer? Tossers.

Journalists & Government are setting teachers up as the new miners. Blame the teachers unions and maybe nobody will criticise them. Utterly pathetic.

TheyIsMyFamily · 07/02/2021 21:02

@DBML

Is this really a nurses overtime? If so, good! they deserve it and more. Offer me double time and I’ll consider the holidays.
The problem is, most TAs are working less than 37.5 hours a week, so they'd have fuck all incentive to do even more hours to cover any idiotic government extensions. And many classes can't run well without a TA for a variety of reasons, 1:1, specialist support in core subjects, behavioural issues, etc
DBML · 07/02/2021 21:04

@palacegirl77

I’ve done the explaining; I’ve spent countless hours politely going through the pros and cons of stupid ideas that impact on my life; my families life and my pupils lives and it hasn’t made a blind bit of difference to people’s perception of us.
It all boils down to me being a lazy fucker.
I read a load of shite about ‘teachers closing schools’, ‘teachers refusing to work’, ‘teachers stealing vaccinations’, ‘teachers not providing online learning, ‘teachers painting their house or putting up sheds during the working week’ and that’s just TODAY!

I am beyond pissed. I am fuming. I have never felt so ‘unappreciated’ in my life and I certainly am in no place to start calling my job a fucking vocation.

FrippEnos · 07/02/2021 21:05

catatecheese
Sounds like teachers would get longer holiday in autumn and Christmas instead? So that's fair and sensible really as summer holidays were always far to long anyway.

You do know that we (England) have the shortest holidays.

DBML · 07/02/2021 21:07

@TheyIsMyFamily

Absolutely. I’ve already said my residuals and grades in school are the best, but much of that is down to my hard working and ridiculously underpaid TA’s. I could not do my job well without them and they deserve a medal for what they are doing at the moment. To expect them to work through the summer for even double pay would be an insult. They deserve a lot better than how they are being treated by the gov.

TheyIsMyFamily · 07/02/2021 21:08

Boris can fuck right off. My children have national sporting events during the first 3 weeks of the summer holidays. I will be at those with them.

Totally get this. Im sorry, first time on here for months so I have only seen what Ive seen today. At least youre honest. But please dont give people trying their best such a tough time. My kids are at home because we can (just about) manage it and we wanted to help our lovely teachers and school out. The fact we want more time with teachers is a testament to them, nothing negative. Reasonable suggestions as to why this wouldnt work does help and probably would help us in not backing it should it come to it.

I’m sorry if I’ve been rude. I really am very upset today.

No apology needed, its a bloody stressful time x
@pooiepooie25 please tell me you are not a teacher? You sound vile.
I am a teacher and a bloody great and popular one. The people on this thread who are vile are the ones constantly telling teachers that they are lazy and need to work every hour of the day.

Wotapolava · 07/02/2021 21:11

If you parents, kids and teachers want to go on holiday - you go!

I'll sort the government out.
Wink

Thank you and I am- very!

manicinsomniac · 07/02/2021 21:13

I think the private school I work in is extending our summer term by 2 weeks (not confirmed, they're gathering parental opinion this week). But that will just bring us in line with state schools. We'll still have nearly 6 weeks off.

In normal years, parents wouldn't want it because holidays are cheaper up until mid July. But I think they will this year. We've taught a full online timetable through both lock downs but it's not as good as being in the classroom. The children haven't fallen behind but a lot of them haven't progressed much either. They've also missed out on a lot of the fun stuff which we could put into July.

We don't do fines so parents would be free to go on any holidays already booked/moved and free to keep their children off if they chose to.

I suspect they'll arrange for any of us with pre booked holidays to be able to go. I haven't got anything planned so haven't asked. But we tend to just cover each other rather than have supply anyway so I think it will be ok for colleagues in that position. I hope so, anyway!!

DBML · 07/02/2021 21:15

@palacegirl77

It is. For everyone.

I think I could do with coming off MN for a bit.

Best of luck with the home schooling. Like your brothers and friend, we really all do wish this was over, so we can get back into the classroom. I honestly don’t know anyone who is enjoying Groundhog Day at home. X

NotQuiteUsual · 07/02/2021 21:16

No thank you. I'd quite like my childrens teachers to have a chance to relax and regroup after the year they've had. How are they going to help my kids catch up if they're completely burnt out?

Weaveron · 07/02/2021 21:17

@lunapeace

Private schools will most likely extend their terms (they tend to break up end of June anyway). I can't see this happening in State Schools.
God, I hope so (still have one at an independent school - or would be, if it were open...)
