That's not going to work. Another ridiculous idea. What about all those people that moved their cancelled holidays for 2020 by a year. Summer holidays may go ahead if vaccine roll out happens and who is going to cancel and lose their money - I'm not. Will be lots of absent children.

Will you be giving up your free time to sort people’s teeth out Palace? I bet there’s quite the waiting list at this point and plenty of catch-up to do! Will you have to give up planned family time or a booked holiday for it? Lose money? Will you be paid? Standard or extra?

Italiandreams · 07/02/2021 20:30

Putting your own family first doesn’t mean you don’t want to make a difference . I easily work 50-60 hour weeks, but I have to put my foot down and say that is enough. My family already don’t see enough of me, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. I would never expect my children’s teacher to sacrifice their family for my child.

Teachers are guided by expectations of leadership teams so have to follow their expectations to ensure consistency within a school.

sherrystrull · 07/02/2021 20:30

@palacegirl77
I don't think that is what they meant. They were laughing at the fact you implied you were homeschooling your Dc for the teachers benefit rather than for the benefit of your DC.

TheMoth · 07/02/2021 20:31

You can want to make a difference and worry about kids without it being a vocation. But it really shouldn't take over your life. Having my own kids has given me more perspective. Is it right to spend all my time focusing on other people's kids and not my own? I went into teaching because I love my subject. I did not go into it to be a social worker, mental health nurse and provider of resources.

A vocation implies a calling, which allows people to abuse that. Those teachers, and I'm one, who go over and above aren't necessarily doing it cos it's a vocation. We're doing it to fill the gaps governments have created.

palacegirl77 · 07/02/2021 20:31

@Awalkintime

palacegirl77 What is wrong with twinkl? Why should every teacher produce their own work when there are plenty of resources out there that will be similar?

Work smarter. I don't have a dog and bark myself.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, supplemented against face to face teaching and discussion in class. A word search and a colouring in sheet for a (then) 6 year old isnt brilliant (I can only speak about my experience Im sure many teachers provided much better home learning previously and it has improved now).
sherrystrull · 07/02/2021 20:32

What this in March @palacegirl77 or is this what you're getting now?

Nellodee · 07/02/2021 20:32

Send them in. We really don't care. If you're entitled to, do it. You don't get fifty fucking martyrdom points for keeping them off, sorry.

RubyViolet · 07/02/2021 20:33

@mumsneedwine

Just seen this on front of the DM. We are back to these weird room last with no kids in them. If only eh. Mine would have had 30 in here. All squashed in.
Anyone would think that the Government PR’s are now using the schools story to cover up something. The Dailymail never cared about kids so much before ! Call me cynical but this is keeping the export trade collapse / Brexit disaster stories from the front page.
MrsHamlet · 07/02/2021 20:34

Im not contracted to teach my children and lose my income either but Im doing it, and keeping my child at home FOR YOU
Schools aren't closed for us. They're closed because the infection rates nationally were dangerously high.

Redwinestillfine · 07/02/2021 20:36

It's fine as an idea to be brought in for 2022, after it can be properly implemented and teachers and pupils can plan accordingly. It won't work this year, teachers and kids will be knackered and people have holidays booked.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 07/02/2021 20:36

I think Gavins Williamson and Co should give up their break with no pay and all squash in together in the Houses of Parliament with no masks. The country has fallen behind and I hope he sees his job as a vocation. In addition he should pay for the photocopying and buy his own stapler.

Well lets see. My day is home learning all day whilst my partner is at the lab busting a gut. When he gets home (or sometimes whilst im juggling the kids depending on timescale) I do approx 5 hours admin a day. He has worked 6 hours at the lab today, yesterday I went to the lab to do a full 8 hours to catch up. He usually work 3 evenings a week after the kids are in bed. Im left with the children most of the time. We have lost a lot of money. We are absolutely going to have to pull in all hours to "catch up" yes. Because if we dont, we lose our house. Would you like any more info on my personal circumstances? Just remember, we could legitimately have sent our kids to school - but we havent to make them safer for teachers and those kids with frontline parents. Why do we bother?

March - May we had nothing at all but they werent "teaching" in school then. This is what we got May - July.
Remmy123 · 07/02/2021 20:37

Every thread I have read regarding schools are full of teachers saying 'I'm not doing it' / 'I won't be doing it'/'i work enough hours as it is'

Your all in the wrong job with that resentful attitude. We are alll in a shit situation abd doing far more than we usually wouid in a normal situation.

Stop the bitterness!!!

CallmeAngelina · 07/02/2021 20:37

"I think when a teacher on hear tells me that I dont have empathy for teachers"

But that's NOT what I said. It may be what you heard, however.

I've given 35 years of my working life to my schools. You can call it a job or a vocation or whatever you like, but I've done my best and made a good fist of it. I refuse to be put on a guilt trip for others' own ends about it.

TheMoth · 07/02/2021 20:37

allaround and bagfuls of biros. And hundreds of plastic wallets. And tissues.

Remmy123 · 07/02/2021 20:38

@DBML no one is making you cancel any holiday - calm down!

Schools arent closed. My daughters class has 18 out of 29 kids in. My child could have gone in under Gov guidelines. I thought we were doing the right thing by not sending her in.. Turns out we are just mugs.
sherrystrull · 07/02/2021 20:39

Right. When the curriculum was suspended and the expectations weren't clear.

Have you had better provision since September? And in particular since January?

Honestly sounds like you're struggling a lot. I would contact the school and send them in, even for a couple of days a week.

Italiandreams · 07/02/2021 20:40

I agree I am incredibly unreasonable for saying I can not work more than 60 hour weeks and pay to put my children in childcare so I can work for free. I must think of others , god knows who will think about my children though .

Awalkintime · 07/02/2021 20:40

palacegirl77
You do know teachers are also parents who are home schooling their own kids and juggling their work alongside educating their own kids.

They are also working into the night and weekends to catch up. My colleague has her children in her classroom as she doesn't have a place despite her and her husband being key workers and she is teaching to her class in school, her class of home learners and her two kids of her own.

Everyone is in the same boat. It is a difficult situation for everyone.

"but Im trying my best."

Yes. I do believe that, and I know how difficult it must be. But you can surely accept that school staff are also doing their best. Everyone is.

So, how about a little empathy back this way??"

Your words. how about a little empathy back this way. Im showing my empathy for teachers by keeping my kids at home.

Bitterness? It's your post that screams bitterness.
DBML · 07/02/2021 20:41

See Palace, if you were a teacher explaining how hard you’ve been working, no one would believe you.

CallmeAngelina · 07/02/2021 20:41

"but we havent to make them safer for teachers and those kids with frontline parents. Why do we bother?"
It's nothing to DO with making it safer for teachers. Do you think for one moment that's why the government closed schools? They/no one could give a shit about school staff's safety. They were closed due for a public health intervention, and THAT is why numbers need to be kept low, even now.
Please don't try to guilt trip teachers on this one. We are as much victims in this as everyone else.
