Extending school term at end of July

That's not going to work. Another ridiculous idea. What about all those people that moved their cancelled holidays for 2020 by a year. Summer holidays may go ahead if vaccine roll out happens and who is going to cancel and lose their money - I'm not. Will be lots of absent children.

Well I’m sorry, but it’s not my job to subsidise this. I’m not contracted to work the summer, end of.[/quote]
So for you, genuine question, its a job, not a vocation yes? Like those nurses working all hours, doctors working weekends etc, for you its the hours you get paid for and nothing more?

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:05

@palacegirl77

Absolutely. It’s a job. I need the money.
After this year, that really is all it is.

Sorry to hear that. But thank you for being honest :-)

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:07

@palacegirl77

No need to be sorry. I don’t know many people who can’t get enough of work. Most people do it to pay bills. I’ve never heard anyone say ‘give me a bit more of that work!’ ‘Holiday, who needs a holiday, more work is what I need’ and so on and so forth.

Holidays are precious to most of the working population. Especially if you’re not paid for that time.

Teachers do not have job security at all. The huge cuts that have happened in education have meant that teachers and TAs have lost their jobs in the past few years and will continue to do so as the cuts continue.

There is also a lot of underhand stuff going on in some LAs. I lost my job when my new head teacher changed my contract from permanent to fixed term. Yes I took it further but that didn't stop me being 6 months without work and 6 months without a penny of income along with the 13 other staff who followed the same route after me. So there isn't as much job security as you think.

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:10

@Awalkintime

I’ve been through the redundancy process three times in the last 5 years. They don’t give a shit about staff.

Trumplosttheelection · 07/02/2021 20:13

We've booked a holiday and we will be going. Is there any chance the government can try and regain some grip on reality?

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:14

But do you know what? Im not contracted to teach my children and lose my income either but Im doing it, and keeping my child at home FOR YOU.

Sorry, I just read this and almost choked on my laughter. You’re home schooling your kids for OUR benefit!? Hahahaha
They are your kids, you’re actually doing it for them.

Italiandreams · 07/02/2021 20:15

You know what pre having my children I literally gave my all to the job, I would have worked the summer and did work all the time but since having my family , they come first so it is a just job for me now. However, I actually think I am a better teacher for it. I have more experience, I have better boundaries etc ( please note this is personal to me, there are plenty of excellent teachers who do not have children). There is nothing wrong with it being a job, it’s so much better for me having work life balance. I am not sorry that I will always put my family before my job.

Sorry to hear that. no I wasnt as aware of that as I should be. I guess what I meant was that schools always need teachers I guess. But yes, the school funding is abysmal.

Again, I completely agree with what you've said here

mumsneedwine · 07/02/2021 20:17

Just seen this on front of the DM. We are back to these weird room last with no kids in them. If only eh. Mine would have had 30 in here. All squashed in.

I run a dental laboratory, myself and partner are classed as keyworkers. We could therefore have legitimately sent our kids to school where the youngest would have had face to face teaching. But we arent as we are trying to do the right thing by schools and the local community in keeping the numbers down. Make me wonder why we bother with this reaction though so thanks for that.
Volcanoexplorer · 07/02/2021 20:18

Well I’ve already booked a holiday cottage in this country for the first week of the summer holidays (hopeful that travel in the U.K. could be allowed by then). Both myself and dh are teachers and we definitely won’t be cancelling our holiday just to do more work. We’re both working far far more than our hours and deserve a break and my children deserve some time with us. We’ve both worked a good number of hours over the weekend (like always) and our children are not getting a good deal at the moment. I’m really looking forward to our holiday.

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:19

Exactly @Italiandreams

When I’m being paid and working my contracted time I give 100%. I’ve had the highest residuals in the school for the last 5 years running. (That means kids do better in my lessons than any other for those who don’t know what residuals are) and I’m not a BTEC or a vocational subject.
I work for my kids, I work SMART. I do not work for their parents. I do not work when I shouldn’t be working.

It’s balance that keeps me sane and actually makes my ‘job’ pay in terms of grades.

TheMoth · 07/02/2021 20:20

Calling teaching a vocation is just another way to squeeze more out of us. It's a job. A job that takes over your life. Maybe if you see it as a vocation, just resent the impact a bit less.

sherrystrull · 07/02/2021 20:21

@palacegirl77

I don't send my children to school when I can keep them at home, I don't take them to shops or visit shops unnecessarily to protect shop workers, I don't do long journeys in case I need emergency service help. Everyone is helping each other keep as safe as possible at the moment but there's no need to Lord it over teachers.

catatecheese · 07/02/2021 20:22

It's fine by me. We will not be risking going away and would be lovely for them to be back learning with friends.
Sounds like teachers would get longer holiday in autumn and Christmas instead? So that's fair and sensible really as summer holidays were always far to long anyway.
If my children are offered any additional education I will be taking it. Especially if it is in an actual classroom with other children and playtime with other children! hell I would bite your hand off for that for them.

DBML · 07/02/2021 20:22

@palacegirl77

A dental laboratory at home?

CallmeAngelina · 07/02/2021 20:24

"Sounds like teachers would get longer holiday in autumn and Christmas instead? So that's fair and sensible really as summer holidays were always far to long anyway."

Fair and sensible for whom? I don't WANT an extra week in bloody November, or the first week in January, ffs.

And trust me, NO ONE is going to be fit for teaching/learning after the long summer term.

I can only go on my experience with what teachers I know in the real world tell me I guess. My best friend works in a school in a deprived area. Throughout the first lockdown not only did she work full time but also created home learning packs and distributed these to her students in her "own time" because she was so worried about them. She is desperate to have them back in school. My daughters teacher sent us twinkl sheets via email and we had 1 phone call in 5 months with her. Ive always said I wouldnt want to teach because of all the "outside the classroom" work you have to do, and admired teachers for seeing it as a vocation and wanting to make a difference. For those teachers that have children, are you happy that your child is going in to someone that sees it as just a job, a pay cheque and nothing else?

I think when a teacher on hear tells me that I dont have empathy for teachers and laughs when I say Im home schooling to help keep them safe Im within my rights to point out that that reaction makes me feel like a sucker and I should have just sent my daughter in!

No. The dental laboratory is not at home obviously.

My son is at my school, so I know he’s taught by someone who considers it a job Grin

However, I’m still very good at my job.

What is wrong with twinkl? Why should every teacher produce their own work when there are plenty of resources out there that will be similar?

Work smarter. I don't have a dog and bark myself.
