Are teachers getting invites for Vaccination?

To2do · 03/02/2021 14:18

I've seen a few posts now where teachers have been invited for a vaccine (outside of the given order stated by the JCVI ).

Has a decision been made to include teachers in one of the higher groups?

OP posts:

Not as far as I'm aware...I'm a TA and my daughter a teacher in diff schools.

NapCracklePop · 03/02/2021 15:52

@Pastanred

Teachers dont need to b prioritised as they are no more at risk as evidence has been shown to prove

given vaccination still requires you to isolate, it wont make a blind bit of difference in terms of staff absence

far more at risk occupations outside of NHS

I say that as a teacher myself

Mind you, that same data showed female secondary school teachers have a similar risk of death to female healthcare staff. So maybe we should stop vaccinating the healthcare staff too on that basis... especially with the Pfizer which hasn't yet been demonstrated to reduce transmission. If it doesnt, arguably an asymptomatic (because vaccinated) nurse who carries on working is more risk to their patients than one who gets symptoms and isolates.

I completely disagree with that by the way, but if we're going with death risk data as you suggest that is the logical progression.

If we're going with infection risk data, secondary teachers have been shown to be at higher risk than many other professions (along with the other front line workers you would expect- police, bus drivers etc) and should be prioritised for phase 2.

Hummmmming · 03/02/2021 15:53

From March to December so including long periods when schools were only open to key workers or schools were shut due to the summer holidays. Would like to see the data from Sept to December as I suspect it would look somewhat different.

Pastanred · 03/02/2021 15:54

i agree possible give teachers above healthy young but not above age

www.theguardian.com/society/2021/jan/30/older-groups-must-remain-top-priority-for-vaccines-warn-government-advisers

police etc are much higher risk than teachers

SinkGirl · 03/02/2021 15:56

The staff at my twins specialist school have started having vaccinations this week and so have the drivers and transport assistants. And thank goodness for that - we’ve just finished two self isolation periods in one month due to cases at school and it has been so awful for them (and not easy for us either).

Luckypoppy · 03/02/2021 15:59

I'm one of those SEN staff. It won't stop the need for Isolation sadly but it will put an extra layer of protection in for our CEV students.

We have been vaccinated.

Kitcat122 · 03/02/2021 16:00

No

VaTeLaverLesMains · 03/02/2021 16:04

I'm cev and waiting.

I'm trying not to mind hearing about everyone getting done ahead of the order and do feel happy for them.

The vaccine prob won't work for me anyway so it may make sense to do the next groups ahead of people on chemo.

But part of me feels a bit left behind. We are told not to phone and ask what's happening.

Coffeeandaride · 03/02/2021 16:08

@yearinyearout

Only teachers in the highest vulnerability groups or providing lots of personal care in SEN settings are getting invited.

Not true. I have two friends who are teaching assistants in a special needs school, they aren't clinically vulnerable and don't do personal care but had their jab last week (as did the rest of the staff in their school)

Yes I think all teachers/staff in SEN schools are getting because of the risk to pupils, whether or not personal care.
BentBastard · 03/02/2021 16:10

I work in a special school and absolutely no talk of anyone getting the jab. Looks like it depends on local authority.

I do have a friend in a special school in another authority that has had it but I don't know for sure there rent any CEV reasons (would be rude to ask).

TheFallenMadonna · 03/02/2021 16:11

Some, not all, local authorities are designating special school staff as health and social care workers.

It's really hard isn't it, the waiting and hearing about others getting their vaccines.

My CEV DH gets his this Saturday. As his carer and CV myself, I have to wait until group 6 - which is every man and his dog. And we're not the fastest area of the country for rollout here.

I really hope your call comes soon.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 03/02/2021 16:17

@Pastanred. What's your beef?

If they looked at the period where schools were open to ALL pupils and didn't break the groups within teaching down to small sub groups -ie present the information honestly, you'd soon see teachers/school staff zAre much more likely to get COVID.
It's bloody obvious apart from
Anything else.

2boysand1princess · 03/02/2021 16:22

@bluechameleon

We got an email yesterday saying all special school staff are now invited to book. Got mine booked for next week.
That’s fab news! I believe Sen staff should definitely be prioritised. A lot of Sen/special school children are vulnerable and since they can’t have vaccine makes sense to give to carers and teachers.
fussychica · 03/02/2021 16:26

Friend who works in admin in SEN school had hers last week. Not heard of any mainstream teachers being offered it.

mootymoo · 03/02/2021 16:28

Our drs is prioritising teachers, police etc for leftover vaccination if they are over 50 or come under group 6, those who are cev are already eligible. My gps when asking for my occupation said that they intended to start to offer the vaccine to all people in public facing roles who fit into the first 9 groups as soon as 1-4 are completed, which I think is very sensible. If you are 62, no health conditions and taken early retirement you are at a lower risk than a policeman 10 years younger at coming into contact with it. The practice manager also said surgeries were being told to use discretion on group 6, adding as needed

ExpulsoCorona · 03/02/2021 16:29

@Pastanred you totally ignored my comment about community transmission. All keyworkers, basically people who are public facing should be done once the vulnerable age groups are covered in my opinion. Lots of countries are prioritising keyworkers. Our government did really well with procurement and development of vaccines but they haven't done well with much else in this pandemic, they need to take care.

BentBastard · 03/02/2021 16:31

Mootymoo, how do they know?

My GP has no ideas I'm a SEN TA.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 03/02/2021 16:34

Thanks Puffy
I hope you get sorted soon too

HarryBlackberry1 · 03/02/2021 16:34

Yes, SEN teacher here. I think it's fair enough to be honest, as the children cannot practise social distancing, and we are dealing with body fluids, etc. Also, many staff are vulnerable.

AllAroundTheWrekin · 03/02/2021 16:35

Once priority groups have been vaccinated then teachers should get vaccine. It will help stop spread too. They deal with hundreds of kids each day. Duty of care should also mean safety measures introduced.

And I'm not a teacher. But I do believe they should be protected. Frankly only a complete twat would oppose better safety measures.

I think because the OP asked about teachers in the thread specifically, that quote was not saying only teachers and not TAs but responding to the OP saying only teachers in SEND schools and not teachers elsewhere are being invited for the jab, if that makes sense?

If you are 62 and have no health conditions you'll be group 7, not 6. Six is for those with certain health conditions or over 65.
sd249 · 03/02/2021 17:11

I think SEN teachers should get it.

They cannot social distance (we can't really in a mainstream school either but definitely not the same at all) but they are often providing personal care also.

I totally agree that SEN teachers should be getting it now. I don't think mainstream teachers should be getting it before everyone who is vulnerable is.

I think once Over 50's are vaccinated all public facing Key Workers should be considered next.

Lifeaintalwaysempty · 03/02/2021 17:19

Some teachers have been invited this week yes. Not sure how/who has instigated it.
