Will you book a UK summer holiday?

Now is the time I usually book our summer holiday abroad but I don’t think that will be happening this year. I’ve been toying with booking somewhere in the UK instead and was going to spend the next few weeks looking.

Then I was reading in the Sunday Times travel section yesterday that travel experts predict that UK holiday accommodation for the summer will be completely booked up by Easter. So I went ahead and booked the place I’d been looking at.

Do you think they’re right and will you be booking something in the UK?

Well the cynic in me says there’s obviously a big drive to put people off sending all their money abroad and wanting the economy boosted by getting everyone to holiday here. Which isn’t a bad thing obviously, but I think that’s definitely the reason behind all the travel predictions that everything in the U.K. is going to be booked up so get on it now.

Booked five days on the Yorkshire coast, but I’d prefer to go abroad to get honest.

I never book things early. I have close family in Europe and visited when it was possible to do so and each time booked very close to when I left. The day before or a few days before. The situation is very fluid so I wouldn't make plans far in advance. I want to visit this summer and will only book shortly before if it's allowed. With the full knowledge that I could get stuck and also that if I need to get myself back somehow, it's at my own cost etc. Just see how it goes ! I don't think I would personally go on a holiday though. I only travel to see my family ( mum and dad and siblings ). To me that's different to a holiday. I have always lived between two countries.

We would normally do something abroad and something in the UK. I have booked something in the UK for early summer. Considering booking something else too which will also be UK due to risk of Covid restrictions and also just easier this year with a new baby. Noticed quite a lot of places I looked at were already booked up for school holidays and prices seem higher than usual.

TupilaLilium · 01/02/2021 11:28

We did. Just for a change of scenery to look forward to. We booked a beach house only 40 minutes away because the teenagers don't want to come (fair enough) and we can be close. We also remain in our own health board.

I still have vouchers for a campsite in the south of france from last year. I am not counting on getting to use those, but I hope.

PaperMonster · 01/02/2021 11:29

We normally holiday in the UK and have two booked - one is rolled over from last year. The other we booked last September for this Summer.

RaraRachael · 01/02/2021 11:31

Normally I would book a trip ages in advance to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. This year we're planning on doing a UK road trip but won't be booking anything till a few weeks before. We got caught out by booking a break in October and the restrictions were tightened just before we were due to go.

vinoandbrie · 01/02/2021 11:32

Yes, we’ve booked a week in Cornwall in July in a cottage on the beach. Very much hope it goes ahead, but am also realistic that it may not.

I’ve not told the children as I don’t want them upset if it gets cancelled. I will tell them if we get to a stage where we’re as sure as we can be that it’s going ahead - not before June I wouldn’t think.

idontlikealdi · 01/02/2021 11:35

I have France booked but am on the verge of accepting we lose the deposit and booking something in the UK today. Have spent the morning looking, a couple of places I looked at were fully booked for summer already, and a holiday park in Cornwall was coming out at £8k for two weeks which is just crazy.

rosie1959 · 01/02/2021 11:41

Cornwall always has been expensive We take all our holidays in the UK and channel isles. Have looked at Cornwall hotels but usually mega bucks to what I can pay in Devon or Dorset
Jersey is supposed to be expensive but I can even get that much cheaper than Cornwall and usually it's not overcrowded

SpecialToffee · 01/02/2021 11:41

Yes, I booked a week in a cottage in the Peak District. We wanted a particular week so I didn’t want to leave it late. Went for a cheapish place in case we can’t go and can’t get our money back.

Lissy23 · 01/02/2021 11:43

Yes we’ve got several things booked already in the UK.

One at Easter, two in June (short breaks) and a four night stay by the sea in August. Why not? It’s helping the tourism industry in those areas and by summer things should be much better hopefully. All refundable, I think all should go ahead except possibly Easter. But could still happen.

AfternoonToffee · 01/02/2021 11:43

Booked our last August. Finding somewhere for 5 that is still reasonable is difficult, and we have found a place we like. Went elsewhere the last couple of years so wanted to go back to our usual place. In normal times it books up quickly so booking a year ahead is pretty much the norm.

AfternoonToffee · 01/02/2021 11:46

We were 'due' (in our family planning way) to go away at Easter, but will hold off on that. We spend a lot of time in Scotland usually but now isn't the time to do that.

ILookAtTheFloor · 01/02/2021 11:50

We have for August like we always do.

We don't holiday abroad at all. Prices were eye-watering, thankfully family have stepped in to help us a bit.

Dentistlakes · 01/02/2021 11:50

We have 2 weeks booked and in August which I hope we can go ahead with. We did have a moment of madness last summer when we nearly booked a skiing holiday in France for Feb half term, but didn’t go ahead with it thankfully. Hopefully the UK will open up enough for people to holiday domestically like last year.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 01/02/2021 11:54

Yes, I booked something last week for August, mainly because I was worried that everything would get booked up. I was looking at glamping type holidays and there seemed to be limited availability over the school holidays. We're accepting that the deposit may be lost and trying not to get too excited but I'm pleased we have something booked.

StrangerHereMyself · 01/02/2021 11:54

Unfortunately it’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, the more true people say it the more true it becomes.

But I did find that my choice of UK cottages was much more restricted than usual last year, when we booked in May, and the Googling I’ve done to date is showing Summer 2021 cottages much more booked up than usual for this time of year. I wouldn’t normally book for August until April or May, which still normally leaves me loads of choice, but I think this year I need to get going, which is annoying because I’m not in the mood, things are a bit uncertain and the rest of the family are completely unwilling to get involved in planning for six months away.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 01/02/2021 11:56

Yes, we booked ours last week just in case

Might not go ahead but on the off chance that we are able to go, I didn't want to find everywhere already booked up

user1493413286 · 01/02/2021 11:59

We booked our U.K. holiday at the end of last year as I suspected they’d get quite booked up. We were hoping to do a foreign holiday too but have accepted that it’s not going to happen this year and even if it was allowed I wouldn’t

CarolEffingBaskin · 01/02/2021 12:00

Already have! Week in Scotland. Will book a couple of shorter trips over the next few weeks too.

Teakind · 01/02/2021 12:05

I won’t be booking a holiday abroad this year. I’m hoping for a big one in 2022 instead.

I’ll hopefully be going to Dorset in the summer instead.

Notonthestairs · 01/02/2021 12:09

We've booked a week in Devon in August. Will be keeping our fingers crossed we can go.

Lemons1571 · 01/02/2021 12:10

No. Booked France for august (back in the autumn) and am going to chance it going ahead. I think I’d rather leave booking the uk until the last minute, or not go, which I accept is risky as there’s 5 of us. But spending over a grand self catering to potentially sit in the rain - I’d rather save the money til 2022.

The cynic in me also thinks the government are keen on us spending in the uk.

tatutata · 01/02/2021 12:11

I've booked three separate houses for three weeks. I have to hope that by July the rule of 6 is lifted though otherwise I can't go with my parents.

Titsywoo · 01/02/2021 12:16

I booked Duinrell in the Netherlands for last August and had to move it to this August so I am waiting to see what happens. My DD is doing her GCSEs (or whatever they will end up being!) this summer and am keeping all fingers crossed we can do this as a treat for her as she has worked so hard. If we can't go I doubt I will move it again - Duinrell charge a few hundred to move to the next year as do British Airways and I feel like I'm throwing money away each time. I'll take a hit on the Duinrell deposit and get vouchers for BA if it comes to that. However this means we can't afford to book anywhere in the UK and by the time we have made our decision everywhere will be booked :(
