Will you book a UK summer holiday?

Now is the time I usually book our summer holiday abroad but I don’t think that will be happening this year. I’ve been toying with booking somewhere in the UK instead and was going to spend the next few weeks looking.

Then I was reading in the Sunday Times travel section yesterday that travel experts predict that UK holiday accommodation for the summer will be completely booked up by Easter. So I went ahead and booked the place I’d been looking at.

Do you think they’re right and will you be booking something in the UK?

I don't want to book within the UK!! I'm still holding on to the tiniest of hopes that we might be able to get off this damp, miserable island by the summer.

If not and everything here is booked up we'll go and visit family, if we're allowed. If not, I dunno. Lots of day trips?

Ugh, I'm miserable just thinking about it.

coffeecow · 01/02/2021 12:23

Really want to book France for August but can't decide if I'm being totally unrealistic.

jabsinarms · 01/02/2021 12:27

I might book something last minute depending what the case numbers look like later in the summer. Then again, I can't be bothered with all the 'Covid secure' measures that are likely to still be in place so will probably just wait until 2022 or later if/when SD is dropped. I'm lucky in that I have a nice garden to sit in though and that I've had some good holidays over the last few years.

LadyWithLapdog · 01/02/2021 12:27

Not booking anything in the UK. Will try and visit family abroad if things go well. If not, I’ll save the money for next year.

starlingsintheslipstream · 01/02/2021 12:32

I'm going to book something for August this week. I think stuff is getting booked up, plus I imagine some people transferred bookings from last year so there does seem a shortage. I've resigned myself to paying more than usual, but we didn't get a holiday at all last year so I don't mind so much - we had a multi-household holiday planned for last summer but it obviously didn't go ahead.

Pastanred · 01/02/2021 12:35

I’m not booking UK as holding out for abroad

For me UK holidays just don’t feel like a holiday so I’d rather not go

I need reliable weather with pool and beach etc - anything less is just too stressful with teens

Neolara · 01/02/2021 12:35

We booked a UK holiday for August at new year. Its refundable until a week before we go, so if by some miracle international travel is back on by then, we have the option of looking for a last minute trip abroad.

nicknamehelp · 01/02/2021 12:37

I was looking at weekend for a week in August and alot were fully booked for school holidays in particular. I think if looking in a popular area at peak time you perhaps should book sooner rather than later, also don't forget some will be booked up with people who transfered their booking from last year.

AuntyClementine · 01/02/2021 12:40

Not booking anything anywhere due to the lack of certainty. Will probably book something “on the hoof” if things have significantly improved by then.

Sunshinegirl82 · 01/02/2021 12:44

We have young children so generally stick to the U.K. anyway as can't face dragging them on flights yet! We booked Dorset for August this year as soon as we got back from our holiday last year as we have fairly specific requirements and I wanted August (as DS1 is now in reception).

We actually had a fantastic holiday last year in the U.K., sandcastles and rock pools and fossil hunting! DC loved it!

Dahlietta · 01/02/2021 12:50

We always holiday in the UK and usually book about a year ahead. I noticed the other day that I booked this July's holiday last March!! We've got two things booked (self-catering). I'm expecting them to go ahead, while keeping in mind that they might not. As long as they will refund/transfer the booking, I don't think it's a problem.

ChocOrange1 · 01/02/2021 12:54

I would.
Most places are offering a covid guarantee so you can get a refund or switch dates if it has to be cancelled. we have booked butlins for March and will likely have to rearrange. We will also be booking camping for the summer.

Daisy829 · 01/02/2021 12:56

Yes we just made the decision yesterday & have booked a place just outside Whitby for a week in august. We have also booked Northumberland for June. Would love to go overseas but I can’t face the stress of not knowing if it will happen. Discounted heading down south as it takes us forever to get there & costs lots more. We love Whitby & know the area so I’m glad we’ve decided.

I was desperate for a holiday abroad last year after a year of breast cancer treatment. Had to settle for UK. It was very difficult to find anything nice, everything found was booked up to November. We did get away and thanks to a good British summer it was lovely. I booked short, self catering, luxury accommodation so we did not have to mix with people.
This year I am resigned again to UK holidays because the places I would visit such as Portugal and Spain are unlikely to be vaxxed up / opened up. Plus I couldn't bare quarantine in an airport hotel.

I've booked three short breaks. May - might not happen, July and Aug which I'm optimistic will.

Choccorocco · 01/02/2021 13:00

Yes, booked already - a week away in the summer break and half term. Both in England and self-catering to minimise risk of not being allowed to travel and catching/transmitting covid. Not having something to look forward to is too depressing and I would rather look at 4 walls somewhere else for a week, even if it is raining! We usually go abroad but book around now - imagine lots of people will be doing the same so I wouldn’t be surprised if availability of uk places is more limited than usual especially later in the year.

Chailatteplease · 01/02/2021 13:00

Planning on booking Spain (honeymoon) for end of July. After my first vaccine the nurse said I’ll be allowed to travel after my 2nd in April.

Floppywin · 01/02/2021 13:03

Booking UK again this year - did try booking Channel Islands but the owner changed their mind about letting this year "due to Covid" and property was removed from the holiday site etc -deposit returned so back to square one.

Will book a couple of mainland UK one week breaks.

RosesAndLemonade · 01/02/2021 13:04

Yes but we've found something in the UK and that can be moved If there are any lockdowns or restrictions. I wouldn't risk booking abroad or something that wasn't totally movable.

Delatron · 01/02/2021 13:08

I think we’re going to hedge our bets and book U.K. soon but if Europe becomes a possibility I’ll be booking a flight straight away.

LadyCatStark · 01/02/2021 13:12

Nah, I live by the sea and less than an hour away from the lake district so why would I bother spending the price of a foreign holiday on a holiday cottage that I can spend a week watching the rain out of the windows when I can do that for free at home?

Bubbinsmakesthree · 01/02/2021 13:14

I’m going to book something in the next few days. Will be Airbnb with free cancellation, and we’re going to avoid prime spots as I think places like Cornwall or the Lakes are going to be heaving.

Last year we had a good summer holiday in self-catering in the UK that was quite remote and lovely - I just want to find something similarly good this year!

Butterymuffin · 01/02/2021 13:20

Each to their own, but after a year of going nowhere, it will feel like a holiday just to be somewhere that's not my own house!

Have already booked a UK holiday for August and am considering booking another for some other point in the summer. I think restrictions will be very much lessened by then, and I also think nice places will be booked up pretty quickly.

fedup2017 · 01/02/2021 13:25

Not a chance of us booking in the UK.
A self catering cottage costs ££££ and is often not as nice as being at home.
Our last holiday in the UK was in 2012. We camped-it rained. Cornwall whilst pretty was damp, overpriced and full of traffic. Plus the sea was murky, cold and not safe for children to paddle in.
I'd rather save my money and stay at home.

We have a villa in Tuscany rolled over from last year. Will go there if we can if not will visit family and do day trips instead.

Fyi we went to the south of France July /August 2020 for 2 w... Stayed in a villa and drove. It was hot and glorious and we didn't get covid. Broke no rules and didn't have to self isolate on way back.Fingers crossed for this summer.

inquietant · 01/02/2021 13:25

I think travel bans are going to feature for some time yet, as the biggest risk to the UK economy after everyone is vaccinated is a variant/vaccine escape.

I'm not even booking in the UK yet, however, as things could be a) amazing b) shite or c) anywhere in between by the school summer holidays.

Oysterbabe · 01/02/2021 13:25

Yes I've booked a UK break for June half term.
