Will you book a UK summer holiday?

Now is the time I usually book our summer holiday abroad but I don’t think that will be happening this year. I’ve been toying with booking somewhere in the UK instead and was going to spend the next few weeks looking.

Then I was reading in the Sunday Times travel section yesterday that travel experts predict that UK holiday accommodation for the summer will be completely booked up by Easter. So I went ahead and booked the place I’d been looking at.

Do you think they’re right and will you be booking something in the UK?

I live in a tourist town and it was rammed last year as soon as it opened up on 4th July right up until October. People here say bookings are up even more this year so fully expecting it to be very very busy.

Porcupineintherough · 01/02/2021 13:32

I've booked a week away for the June half term (UK based). Umming and ahh - ing about whether to book another uk based week for the summer and wait to see what develops.

Rollergirl11 · 01/02/2021 13:33

Fyi we went to the south of France July /August 2020 for 2 w... Stayed in a villa and drove. It was hot and glorious and we didn't get covid. Broke no rules and didn't have to self isolate on way back.Fingers crossed for this summer.

Yes but I have a feeling that travel abroad will be more restricted than last summer now that the vaccination roll-out is in full swing.

I have booked four cheap UK breaks April, June Aug and November hedging my bets in case any get cancelled. I had booked us on all inclusive last year which was cancelled last minute. I cant do that kind of stress again as it was a lot of money and we hadn't been abroad on a family holiday for four years. I want to save cash for when things are stable

SmallYappyTypeDog · 01/02/2021 13:34

I have booked the Isle of Wight for July. We normally do a small trip there on top of a foreign holiday anyway. Its nice to have something to look forward to again!

lunapeace · 01/02/2021 13:41

I've booked a holiday cottage in the UK during the school holidays with my sisters family.... I do hope household mixing will be allowed!

PolarnOPirate · 01/02/2021 13:42

Yes, we already have but in a super random place as loads already booked up! Get on it!

WouldBeGood · 01/02/2021 13:46

No. As it will be extortionate for the same shite weather

Sauvblanca · 01/02/2021 13:47

We've just booked a week's holiday in the UK this summer, hoping we'll be able to go but fully accept that travel restrictions may still be in place and we'll have to cancel (again). Would have left it until nearer the time but when I had a quick look at the cottage's availability calendar there was only 1 week left in the summer.

Free cancellation until the day before, so nothing to lose by booking now.

Baamoooink · 01/02/2021 13:52

Have booked a short break for end of July in the uk, and looking at booking another for end of August. We didn’t go away at all last year, as our Spanish holiday was cancelled, so really fancy a change of scene, even if only a couple of nights each time Smile . Had hoped to go to France, and almost booked it in December before this wave escalated (lucky I didn’t!) but think it’s too risky now.

OiAlexaShutUp · 01/02/2021 13:58

I thought about it. I booked a UK break this time last year and we were lucky enough to be able to go last August. Although I did spend a few weeks before hand panicking if it would happen or not.

I would really like to book something. But don't want to risk losing my money. I'd sooner wait and spend that money on a few day trips with DC in the summer.

afternooncuppa · 01/02/2021 13:59

Depends on cancellation policy. Who knows what's going to happen in the Summer? Most places I've been browsing through won't give a full refund and zilch if cancelled 4 weeks before so I'm put off to be honest.

Also, went on a UK break last Summer and wished I hadn't bothered - most attractions closed, queues, social distancing, had to book if we wanted to go to the pub for a drink which meant we could never get in and don't start about restaurants - no chance of getting anywhere the whole week we were away. So we basically paid £1000 to sit in someone else's house instead of ours. Never again until there are ZERO restrictions.

MrsGannicus · 01/02/2021 13:59

We've got a holiday in France booked that was moved over from last year (were due to go the day after travel quarantine was announced).
I'm now wondering if I can book a UK holiday park with a Coronavirus guarantee as a back up in case we can't go to France again.
If we can go to France, would I be able to move the UK booking to Easter 2022?

Alfaix · 01/02/2021 14:00

Yes, so far have booked:
Lincolnshire hot tub lodge 4 nights at Easter (not sure this will happen but refundable if still government restrictions)
Glamping 3 nights Nottinghamshire May bank holiday- more hopeful for this but can move to next year no problem.
2 weeks in July- have a villa in Spain reserved but no money paid (just timeshare type points) and no flights booked. Think this is unlikely to happen so have booked a SC cottage in Devon via booking.com with free cancellation up to a week before. Hedging our bets!
Also a week in a hot tub cottage in Norfolk near the coast in August.
Just looking at August bank holiday short breaks at the moment.
UK really expensive this year but we’re determined to get out and have some fun if we are allowed to!Enough of our lives has been wasted staying at home.
If we can we’ll go to the Canaries or Cyprus in October half term but that would be booked a few days before if it’s looking possible.

Alfaix · 01/02/2021 14:05

We had 2 lovely UK breaks last summer- Northumberland in July and Somerset in August. We had a hot tub in Northumberland.
We did lots of NT places including Dunstanburgh Castle and Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne and the Forbidden Corner. In Somerset we did Stonehenge, Longleat, NT places, beaches and Sea Life centre.
We ate out loads as well. It was possible to have a good time despite the Covid restrictions as they stood then and I am hoping this summer looks similar. You had to book ahead a lot- it was like a military operation!

Baamoooink · 01/02/2021 14:07

We’ve used Airbnb as a lot offer free cancellation up to a few days before, so if the situation’s looking dodgy nearer the time we can cancel.

Skyppy · 01/02/2021 14:34

@LadyCatStark

Nah, I live by the sea and less than an hour away from the lake district so why would I bother spending the price of a foreign holiday on a holiday cottage that I can spend a week watching the rain out of the windows when I can do that for free at home?
UK holidays are very expensive it's true. The last time (apart from 2020) I had a main holiday in the UK was 1977 when we went to cornwall and it rained solid for 14 days.

Those who think they will go abroad this year do you really think it's worth it when you will have to isolate in some crummy hotel room for 5-10 days on return?

I have booked a Lakeside lodge here in June. I could only get 3 nights as it was booked up the entire year until December. I've been before and it's beautiful.
Also a penthouse sea view apartment in August where at least I can look at the rain from a different location.
Each of these would easily cost more than a villa abroad.

PQWQ · 01/02/2021 14:40

No, bit if nearer the time we are allowed we will be going somewhere in the UK which I will book a couple weeks ahead of time.

Busydoingnowt · 01/02/2021 14:45

I’ve booked 2 U.K. holidays for the summer. There doesn’t seem to be an issue with availability currently. I am not so sure that people are going to be rushing to book. I have hotel and flight vouchers from last year which I’m not going to be able to use and it all just becomes a massive pain in the arse to deal with as well as a financial risk. I’m willing to take the risk it but others won’t be.

Donotgogentle · 01/02/2021 14:57

Yes, booked cottages with the National Trust which will offer a refund if we can’t go because of Covid rules.

peak2021 · 01/02/2021 15:03

Not booked yet but do not have school age children so can go outside school holidays.

Lyricallie · 01/02/2021 15:13

I'm debating it. In theory getting married in July and wanted a wee Italy break. However that is looking pretty unlikely. So wondering if I should bite the bullet and book somewhere in the UK. I stayed in a really nice cottage last summer just my fiance and I in Kelso and really enjoyed it. So maybe go back there.

HesterShaw1 · 01/02/2021 15:20

If UK holidays were possible last year, then barring absolute disaster there is no way they won't be possible this year. And given that accommodation is going to be at an absolute premium, I would crack on and book.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/02/2021 16:15

No, don’t see the point and the more people travel the Moreno the virus spreads.

For me a holiday is about relaxation, no cooking etc and having to wear masks, hope others don’t get close, not eating out etc wouldn’t feel like any sort of holiday. We’ll save and go more places when safe.

Weallfloatdownhere · 01/02/2021 16:24

Booked a couple of hotel breaks via booking.com with free cancellation up to the day before. One in May and one in June. Not particularly enthused about either but will need a change of scene by then. Will go abroad instead if possible (not if we have to isolate in a crappy hotel for 10 days on arrival back to U.K. though)
