Smelling smoke

I have in the last week or two been smelling smoke randomly where there is no smoke to smell. Everything else normal. Is this a covid thing? And if not what is going on? I have a bit of stuffy nose but no difficulty smelling or tasting other than this weird smoke thing.

My friend had covid before xmas and has been able to smell smoke ever since. It makes her feel sick

Mumsnut · 01/02/2021 11:04

Heck. I had this at Christmas and never thought of Covid

Watching this as I have it too. I spent ages cleaning the tumble dryer filters as I couldn't think what else it could be.

I went to London February 2020 and came ba k with an awful virus where I coughed for over a month. GP said possible covid but obviously unable to confirm way back then.

I've smelt faint smoke smell everywhere since.

Smelling phantom smells is called Phantosmia and can be related to lots of things unfortunately, use or withdrawal from Anti depressants, stress or anxiety amongst other things. I haven’t heard of it being related to Covid but it’s entirely possible.
A change in taste or smell definitely is a Covid symptom, often affecting younger people with long Covid I’ve heard.

I have a cold that has turned into a horrible chest infection at the moment, no blocked nose now, and I am smelling smoke all the time. It's very odd - i made dp go around the house looking for burning things today!

AllAroundTheWrekin · 01/02/2021 11:31

Maybe it's an after effect of all viruses mixed in with anxiety! Definitely no drugs or depression here.

Had this all summer, a particularly acrid bonfire sort of smell. Most unpleasant. I am pretty sure that I had Covid during the first lockdown - not badly, but I lost my sense of taste and smell for a few days.

Fingers crossed, it eventually disappeared and hasn't come back.
