This is the problem with the rich countries being able to get the vaccine before other poorer countries. I don't know what the solution actually is - but if rich countries have enough and excess vaccination IMO they should concentrate on giving it to countries who are really suffering e.g. India, Brazil, Mexico - but we'd probably end up giving the doses to Australia/NZ who are doing well.

A programme for poorer countries has been set up.

BBCONEANDTWO · 29/01/2021 18:41

All this happening is probably just the tip of the iceberg to start the end of the EU.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 18:43

The U.K. is not a member state. It has no say in how the EU chooses to act to protect the interests of its members.

Where did I say otherwise? The EU have been very quiet re Germany's own vaccine buying though have they not?

Cam77 · 29/01/2021 18:43

@CrotchBurn
“”In all fairness though I do feel for the Irish government. Its hands are pretty much tied. It relies on both sides equally in different ways but there is historic resentment towards the UK. The only way RoI can maintain its economic existence is through its membership of the EU. However, it is geographically and historically involved with the UK. It's a pretty fine line to tread.””

That’s a weird comment. You do realize “big” doesn’t equate to “rich”, right? You do realise Ireland outperforms the UK on almost every important metric - health, education, standard of living and would do so with or without the EU.

Hammonds · 29/01/2021 18:43
@Hammonds
The U.K. has a lot of extremely talented and capable people working using their skills and knowledge for the benefit of the country. Bozo isn’t one of them.
Tbf you’d expect the EU to have just as good, capable and talented people working really hard there too. Bozo is the leader that put his hand in his pocket first...

Ohthatsgreat · 29/01/2021 18:43

@Waspnest

I read the BBC article and I'm still a bit clueless.

So is the EU breaking international law like the UK government was told it was doing?!

Not breaking international law but the EU is using a mechanism(?) to allow for border checks between RoI and NI to check for vaccines crossing the border. In effect creating a hard border. The threshold for using this article was meant to be very high and journalists seem very surprised it is being used to soon and for this situation. Which says something I guess.

I fully agree and they're not getting enough of the spotlight or appreciation.

Yup

It is permitted in the agreement but as a last resort scenario.

The last thing the world wanted was a hard border and breaking of the GFA (remember the shit the UK got for wanting to implement the internal market bill?)...same thing really but it's ok because it's been implemented by Brussels.

That's how I understand it.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 18:46

Criticising the EU over the handling of this does not mean
a) You love Bojo
b) The UK gov haven't made other mistakes.
c) You want Europeans to die.

Bookriddle · 29/01/2021 18:47

@CaveMum

I’d imagine there’s a lot of lobbying from Commonwealth countries right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if those are the places any UK excess end up, at least to begin with.
Even before this mess, I'd of still liked to see our excess go to commonwealth countries before the eu
MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:48

Not commonwealth

I’d go for dire straits countries. If Cth amd dire straits then yes but not countries that have no or few cases

Ohthatsgreat Thank you.

So that isn't going to please Joe Biden.

This is like the EU has carelessly dropped a pebble into a pool and the ripples are spreading further and further.

CountessFrog · 29/01/2021 18:50

Our leftovers need to go to the EU. They are our neighbours and they are having an equally hard time.

Can’t believe anyone thinks otherwise

Maybe if they acted with a bit of dignity and humility, instead of throwing their toys from the pram and acting like spoilt brats.
Motorina · 29/01/2021 18:52

@Ohthatsgreat thank you for that. So all those who posted that this definitely wasn't an attack on the UK, and people were being histrionic for saying it was, should eat their words, right?

Me too I can’t believe Commonwealth would be a factor why would it?
Waspnest · 29/01/2021 18:52

Our leftovers need to go to poorer countries who cannot afford them themselves. I'm sure the EU can afford their own.

This.
CrotchBurn · 29/01/2021 18:54

@Cam77
Ireland relied on massive EU cash injections followed by undercutting other EU members on corporate tax to have Google, Amazon etc move their HQs there. Without the EU, what exactly would Ireland's selling point be? And re healthcare, I dont see charging people €60 a pop to see their GP (which is what my dad pays) as outperforming the UK on healthcare.

Also: where's Ireland's vaccine?

itsgettingweird · 29/01/2021 18:57

@MarshaBradyo

Spanish one is reporting that the British have things to hide and that’s why they’re refusing to show it

All you can do is ignore desperate taunts.

Spanish need to look at who created their problems - the EU. Not U.K.

I know. What can the uk have to hide? They don't have any contract with eu. It's with AZ and private contract.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:59

@countessfrog leftovers should go to whoever at the time needs them
Most be that france or africa.
But the reality is we are months away from leftovers, was it yesterday I think
They said 80% over 80's had first jab so thats still some to go and only first jab
My 87 yr old nan 2nd jab not until april

deliciouschilli · 29/01/2021 18:59

The EU have gone stark raving mad!

StephenBelafonte · 29/01/2021 18:59

Of course any spare vaccines should go to poorer countries.

Although I though the WHO had taken steps to ensure that poorer didn't go without the vaccine.
