@CrotchBurn well this is the new arms race. Countries are certainly making strategy moves who they help out.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 29/01/2021 18:12

What a load of nonsense..mostly the loudest shouts to the eu have been '' big beautiful blue, we will miss you, your kind benevolence, your seemingly God like ability to rise above all usual human ills of corruption and greed, and act for the good of each person in each country... Beautiful eu ... All you beautiful faceless burocrats, we can't believe what our evil population has done and we are going to get back into bed with you, as soon as we can... And 🌬 some more cash on the black hole of cough cough corruption good causes....

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:12

@Cam77 should that not if been why they went separately as some were doing at the beginning ?
If its more challenging to do more , why not do as countries ?

Wildswim · 29/01/2021 18:12

No criticism from the Irish Taoiseach today. He thinks the EU are doing a 'good job' with the vaccines and has behaved 'well and effectively' in procuring vaccines.

www.cnbc.com/2021/01/29/ireland-martin-eu-and-astrazeneca-vaccine-dispute-not-a-brexit-battle.html

And the irish media don't seem particularly interested in the whole thing.

SushiSoozie
I think the UK does have friends. Perhaps not so many in the EU

I think they are going to have plenty more friends in the months to come

Cam77 · 29/01/2021 18:12

We should havd gone for no deal IMHO

Why would you want even more red tape with the countries that make up 50% of our trade partners? Sounds like utter madness.... is why out of 650 British MPs only about 10 of them actually wanted no deal.

Hammonds · 29/01/2021 18:12

I can’t believe they still havnt approved it! WTF are they doing Shock

One good think to come out of Brexit eh!

Mingmoo · 29/01/2021 18:13

I really get where you're coming from - but who's to say that you and your dad are any more important than someone in South Africa, Brazil, India who might not have enough vaccine.

If you were looking at ethics you'd have to look worldwide.

Sorry, I can't quote this for some reason but yes, I don't think I should be vaccinated before someone vulnerable in SA or Brazil. The point is that if all the vulnerable people are vaccinated should we look to taper the supply of vaccines. My DH has been done through his work and they had severe trouble finding people to take up the vaccines they were offering, in a bit of the health service that deals with very sick people. About a quarter of their doses a day were not being taken up by staff and they were having to bring in people like my DH who is part-time and really not a priority, so as not to waste a dose. I'm glad DH has been done but he's 43 and fit and well.

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:13

@Motorina

And for that matter, the UK has spent 4 years shouting fuck the lot of you at the EU. It's time to wake up and realise you have no friends left.

Well, that's clear.

I was about to post saying (as I have done repeatedly over the past few days) that I think we should share vaccines with RoI. But posts like this make me think bugger that then.

Yeh, I don’t blame you.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:13

@motorina not sure we could go direct we would have to go to eu as they have bought as one

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 29/01/2021 18:14

Oh dear Soozie, please remember slightly under 50% of the UK very much wanted to remain in the EU. I went to uni in Europe, grew up in UK and US, am very international. Have friends and family all over western Europe. No fan of Tories or Brexit - which is a major pain the arse for our family income. I'm sure I have posted on anti-Boris and anti-Brexit threads!

But I can untie my flags from the pole to see that the EU acted slowly and is now posturing and bullying. Many of my friends and family in the EU are also seeing through the IRE is being directed at the UK. The sooner they calm down the tone, the sooner things will be sorted but of course this will play out badly.

Motorina · 29/01/2021 18:15

@donewithitalltodayandxmas I'd be inclined to offer it direct, anyway. I see no reason why EU rules on joint procurement on vaccine should bind us, given we are no longer in the EU.

It would be up to the RoI whether they accepted or not.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:16

@Mingmoo is it not because we are still hoping HI may be possible?
None if the vaccines are 100% and we still don't have enough proof in real world as such, its ever evolving and things can change , we have seem that already

Floppywin · 29/01/2021 18:16

Oxford AZ seem to be expected to save the world, all the grief they're getting - read the attached and see their plans for this year for the vaccine - all at cost.

The EU ie. a group of richer countries throwing toys out of their prams because they have been so slow to approve vaccine, slow to place orders, wanting a better deal/price as they're a bloc.

The day EU approve vaccine the French President also discredits the vaccine as inferior etc

Imagine being AZ Oxford and having achieved all they've achieved and receive this grief from EU to distract from their own ineptitude.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 18:17

EU triggering article 16 is making waves on twitter. I want to understand the implications. The DUP are furious.

I don't understand the implications yet, need to read up.

Germany looks to be in the best position to leave if they want to,

It would surely collapse without Germany?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:17

@Motorina yes true but would probably be seen as anti eu and I always think on life , always be the better person

I feel quite angry with the EU for making things so difficult for AZ. It's not a good look.

It's this blind towing the line at all costs. I wasn't born here but was raised. I have family from & in Ireland, Spain & France & outside Europe. I was a remainer but they have fucked up & damn right I will criticise as my loved ones deserve better.

Cam77 · 29/01/2021 18:20

@donewithitalltodayandxmas
I agree with you. I think the EU overreaches sometimes. However, when you look at the big picture though I think the U.K. is weakened outside of the EU and the EU has been weakened without the U.K.

Mingmoo · 29/01/2021 18:20

I really don't think this is true, for what it's worth, but I also think it's morally wrong to withhold help because people in Europe think Brexit was a horrible, mishandled mess. We all really need to separate ourselves and our national identities from politics (and especially the past four years). For me, personally, as someone who lives in the UK and is married to an Englishman, the hallmark of the British is willingness to do the right thing even in hard circumstances, and I'd hate to see that principle disappear just because a load of self-interested politicians have convinced the entire country that everyone hates you.
Ohthatsgreat · 29/01/2021 18:20

Macron’s comments about the AZ vaccine being ‘quasi ineffective in over 65’. What a mess, does this not feed anti vaxxers in France? They have more vaccine scepticism than here in the U.K and this surely isn’t going to help.

marbellamarc · 29/01/2021 18:21

The EU meanwhile clearly didn’t do a great job

Mass understatement!
