And you think the UK arent?

What are the UK government doing which makes you think that?

CrotchBurn · 29/01/2021 18:03

WTF is Article 16? Sounds scary😂

SushiSoozie · 29/01/2021 18:03

The UK offered to work jointly with Ireland to procure vaccines as a two-island approach and Ireland said no, they'd rather go with the EU

Well of course they did. The UK just spent 4 years shitting on Ireland and ignoring Northern Ireland and endangering the hard won GFA. Why would Ireland trust the UK on anything?

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:03

@Cam77

Seems like the UK is going to have to bail Europe out (again) and let them have their vaccines

The U.K. is part of Europe, as many leading Brexiters take great pains to point out. The question is what kind of relationship it wants going forward with its European allies/key trade/security partners.

When posters say this I wonder what they’d post if it was other way round.

I can guess how scathing it would be

Wildswim · 29/01/2021 18:03

In NI 65 year olds are being vaccinated, and in ROI a 90 year old is still waiting to be called.

The two programmes are running at such different speeds, how will this work re the border when the north is ready to lift restrictions and the South isn't?

MissConductUS · 29/01/2021 18:04

I think there's a good chance that this is the beginning of the end for the EU. So many lives lost needlessly due to their arrogance and incompetence. Germany looks to be in the best position to leave if they want to,

CrotchBurn · 29/01/2021 18:04

@SushiSoozie
Their loss 🤷‍♀️

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:04

@cam77 they are not acting like allies now , but yes your right people shouldn't confuse europe and the eu, we will always be part of europe .

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:05

The UK offered to work jointly with Ireland to procure vaccines as a two-island approach and Ireland said no, they'd rather go with the EU

Oh really. Up to them but at least they were offered

BBCONEANDTWO · 29/01/2021 18:05

@Mingmoo

My dad is in his 90s and lives on his own, in an EU country where they are waiting patiently for the vaccines. He has two serious medical conditions and he is very high risk but without vaccination he has very little company and he's terribly lonely. Also it's risky for me to see him and care for him. I'd like to think that IF the UK gets to a stage where they are vaccinating people like me, who are healthy and mid-40s with no underlying conditions, AZ might divert more of their production to EU countries who signed up later. It doesn't feel ethical to say 'first come, first served' in the circumstances.
I really get where you're coming from - but who's to say that you and your dad are any more important than someone in South Africa, Brazil, India who might not have enough vaccine.

If you were looking at ethics you'd have to look worldwide.

SushiSoozie · 29/01/2021 18:06

And for that matter, the UK has spent 4 years shouting fuck the lot of you at the EU. It's time to wake up and realise you have no friends left.

Boris has done a great PR job on you lot. Bought up a load of vaccines are you forget about every other terrible thing they've done, its genius in one way. Relies on the gullibility of the British public, but then half of them fell for the NHS bus and all the Brexit lies, so not hard.

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:06

Must be so hard to know that there
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:07

@SushiSoozie no we haven't we chose to leave the eu , we still want to work with the eu hence doing agreements etc.
Your the one saying no friends , yet I have lots of european friends who don't feel like that

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:08

Lol at no friends left. Oh dear...

At least the vaccine is in high demand. For a while there we were told no one would want it

Mingmoo · 29/01/2021 18:09

@CrotchBurn

Ireland will do anything to not align with the UK, despite having an entire economy and pop culture based on the UK's. It has essentially become a vassal state to the EU and a tax haven.
I don't think that's true - Ireland has tried to remain on good terms with the UK. But if you're in the EU of course you're going to assume that being part of a big trading bloc would be an asset in procuring vaccines etc. The UK government has done a brilliant job in securing vaccinations and getting the population protected but don't lose sight of the fact that it's all a huge gamble - that the vaccines work, that they're safe, that they're effective. So far, three for three, thanks to absolutely brilliant scientists here. But I think it's a reflection of being prepared to take chances with people's health in the same way that they were prepared to lift lockdowns etc to help the economy. On one side it has worked, on the other it's been a disaster, but it's the same attitude.

I generally just think it's unhelpful to view it in national or post-Brexit terms and we should all be viewing this as a global challenge, and trying to lend support where we can as when countries sent doctors and nurses to help in badly afflicted places. I do wonder about the noises coming from the EU at the moment. I'm fiercely pro-Europe and I have no idea what they're playing at.

Xenia · 29/01/2021 18:09

Similiar issue to Scotland and Northumberland where I am originally from now we don't had soldiers on Hadrian's wall any more. It is one reason the UK is considering having a UK wide approach after this lockdown rather than scotland going its own way and wales etc.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 29/01/2021 18:09

@SushiSoozie and we have not brought up all the vaccines , the eu has deals set up for more than needed if they all come good .
Its already being said the uk will give away if they have to many according to someone on news now

MarshaBradyo · 29/01/2021 18:10

And the EU us going to have fewer friends when with its export authorisation procedure

Shame some people are so blinded by EU they can’t see the damage they are causing to member states

Frodont · 29/01/2021 18:10

@Belladonna12

And you think the UK arent?

The UK haven't said or done anything wrong. This is an argument between AstraZeneca and the EU.

This. The UK has done really well re vaccination. Katy Bingham did an amazing job and deserves an apology from the press who vilified her.
Viviennemary · 29/01/2021 18:10

We should havd gone for no deal IMHO. In any case what on earth has an agreement with Astra Zeneca and the EU got to do with the UK. We aren't in their club now. They do their own deals and we do ours.

Cam77 · 29/01/2021 18:10

I do find it amusing though , so many people think bojo is useless yet this useless man has been smart and shown up the EU, imagine being Merkel or Macron and being out smartest by bojo, can be good for their egos as we are now seeing grin

Oh give over. The U.K. had to order for 65 million. Well done to the UK team that managed that. I don’t think it was Bozo who personally did the contracts and negotiating btw. The EU meanwhile clearly didn’t do a great job, but they have to order for 300 million with a lot more bureaucracy to hurdle.

CrotchBurn · 29/01/2021 18:10

@SushiSoozie
I think the UK does have friends. Perhaps not so many in the EU. But it doesnt necessarily matter since Europe as a whole is an ageing continent and most of the action is happening in Asia and the US still.

And with friends like the EU (see Greece, see Italy and the joke that was the EU response to them) - who needs friends?

Ohthatsgreat · 29/01/2021 18:10

More details on EU and NI situation. All journalists seem to be saying this is quite remarkable from EU

www.politico.eu/article/eu-imposes-export-controls-on-rich-nations-from-saturday/

Motorina · 29/01/2021 18:10

Well, that's clear.

I was about to post saying (as I have done repeatedly over the past few days) that I think we should share vaccines with RoI. But posts like this make me think bugger that then.
