Do we think an extension delaying opening or is he going to try and get children back in sooner...

I have to say I think the latter would be a fucking disaster but I wouldn’t be at all surprised...

Keir Starmer has said vaccinate teachers over half term and reopen schools

Thank god - someone with a brain at last

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I can’t believe that there are people out there so dim and yet think they’re so clever. This wouldn’t work.

The voice of reason 🤣 lord help us all.
x2boys · 27/01/2021 13:42

Oh FFS @Thedogshow I want my kids to be back at school as much as anyone but not at the expense of teachers health 🙄

Velvian · 27/01/2021 13:42

Even if teachers are vaccinated, what about parents? It doesn't really solve the problem. I'm not prepared to take one for the team at this stage.

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 13:43

8th March is the earliest, (making a decision in 3 weeks then giving notice to schools) it's too early to decide yet

forinborin · 27/01/2021 13:43

I cannot see how with the current vaccinations rates everyone in priority groups could be vaccinated by mid-Feb (given that the 8th of March is dependent on this). That would require a significant increase in intensity.

itsgettingweird · 27/01/2021 13:44

@RigaBalsam

He said its not possible to return after half term.
Yeah 8th of March is earlier date they are considering.

So vaccinate teachers above the clinically vulnerable? Firstly, that’s unscientific. Clinically vulnerable people are more likely to die. Many of these clinically vulnerable people will be parents. I doubt many pupils will be impressed by their teacher pushing in front of their vulnerable Mum or Dad.

Secondly, the spread in schools is NOT caused by teachers. It’s spread by the children, particularly teens, so Covid will still run through schools and from there out into the community. A Covid outbreak in a school bubble will still necessitate everyone isolating so the fact the teacher has had a vaccination isn’t going to help maintain education (God, I hate that stupid slogan from one of the teaching unions).

So - clinically vulnerable people will be thrown under the bus, Covid will still spread via schools, and education will still be interrupted.

Pointless.

swaziscot · 27/01/2021 13:44

Monday 8th March - schools hopefully reopening then

Feels the same as saying let's vaccinate bar staff and let the pubs open.
VinylDetective · 27/01/2021 13:45

@Thedogshow

I don’t think schools should ever return.

Why should teachers have to teach them? They are vectors.

So what if the outcome of being off school is terrible for them? It should ONLY be about the teachers. It’s all outrageous and unsafe.

Of course doctors and nurses, carers and supermarket workers have to be with lots of other people every day, but they’re not in nearly as great danger as the teachers.

I’m assuming this is irony?
Peppafrig · 27/01/2021 13:45

Vaccinating teachers some of them in early twenties and thirties before the clinically vulnerable is disgusting

WhenSheWasBad · 27/01/2021 13:46

It isn’t about the teachers it is about community spread.

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 13:46

@DrinkFeckArseGirls

11+ doesn't exist for state schools in most areas. Didn't in the 80's when I was at school, didn't when my kids reached that age in two other areas, my exh again comprehensive. They aren't going to make plans that only affects private schools and a few areas like Kent

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/01/2021 13:47

@forinborin mid Feb is the target for vaccinating groups 1-4 (over 70s & extremely clinically vulnerable). End of March is the target for everyone over 50.

DareIask · 27/01/2021 13:47

This absolutely

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 27/01/2021 13:48

@TokyoSushi agree with you - let everyone have a go, not just certain year groups. Won't hold my breath though.
Oh just heard won't be before 8th March at the earliest

itsgettingweird · 27/01/2021 13:48

Oh my word he's a twat.

Schools are safe and he should say it.

It's just that they bring together loads of people and so are vectors of transmission.

So do pubs, gyms and shops and cinemas. He's closed them as they aren't safe to open because if this. Why not admit schools aren't any different.

Agree with him about priority vaccinations.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/01/2021 13:48

Sorry - end of March also includes clinically vulnerable aged 16 to 69

Stovetopespresso · 27/01/2021 13:49

I still think all of this is down to the fact BJ won't properly ensure those frontline workers we depend on can stay at home after being pinged by the app as they don't get paid adequately to do so

HostaFireAndIce · 27/01/2021 13:49

I'm not convinced that vaccinating teachers is the answer, but I think 'disgusting' is a little over the top. How do you feel about all the NHS workers in their 20s and 30s who have been vaccinated? What about the ones who don't work in hospitals or knowingly come into contact with Covid patients? Does that disgust you too?

Zandathepanda · 27/01/2021 13:49

My clinically vulnerable Yr12 hasn’t been vaccinated yet. No idea of dates for her.

Cookiecrisps · 27/01/2021 13:49

@Thedogshow why have a pop at teachers? We have ZERO say in when schools reopen. All the other jobs you have mentioned have Covid measures in place which, although they are not perfect, are more than we’ve got in school. In primary our measures amount to wash your hands and hope for the best. No masks, no SD and in my school we’ve been told to shut the window when children say they are cold so no decent ventilation yet we are doing the best we can for all the children both at home and in school because we care. Currently have 20 children in my bubble despite school being ‘shut.’

Schools have lots of staff working on site including dinner supervisors, cooks, play workers, office staff, TAs, site premises staff to name a few but you just choose to have a pop at teachers.

marieantoinehairnet · 27/01/2021 13:49

Whatever he's saying now, take with a punch of salt, there'll be no chance if it going to plan, I predict schools out til Easter...

Oh ffs- I wish I had taught you when you were at school- your comprehension skills might be better.

Relieved it isn't just after half term.
