The Express reports:
"No indication has been given as to why the briefing has suddenly been called, however, it comes less than 24 hours after false reports in the German media caused alarm by claiming the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was ineffective among over-65s."

It could also be to make the announcement about hotel quarantining for those entering the country. I would imagine both subjects.

I can see Starmer's questions at PMQs tomorrow.

So Prime Minister, what lessons have you learnt?

SunshineOutdoors · 26/01/2021 17:33

What was his answer about schools phased returning? I was listening but didn't catch that bit.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/01/2021 17:34

He didn't answer. Said it would depend on the vaccine roll out and numbers, tbc basically.

MaxNormal · 26/01/2021 17:35

What exactly was the point of that update?

JovialNickname · 26/01/2021 17:35

Does anyone else think the person doing the signing on the BBC news channel looks like a drunk Rishi Sunak?

dottiedaisee · 26/01/2021 17:36

He just doesn’t answer one fucking question....am certain there are people who would vote a pile of shit if it was christened Boris and had a blue rosette on it !!
And yes I really genuinely do think I ,would have taken the advice from my advisors and done a better job !

adeleh · 26/01/2021 17:36

I could have done a better job than Johnson. I'm not saying I'd have done a brilliant job, or even a good one, but it would have been better.

I'd have cancelled Cheltenham races last March.
I'd have cancelled the concerts that saw people flying in from Madrid, a known Covid hotspot last Feb/ March. I remember at the time saying he should cancel them.

I would not have wasted billions on appointing people with no experience, such as Dido Harding, to manage Track and Trace or given the contracts for PPE to people with no experience.

I would not have defended Dominic Cummings and let people think that breaking the rules was OK.

I would not have shaken hands with Covid patients and bragged about it.

I would not have made jokes about 'Operation Last Gasp.'

It's really not very difficult to see ways in which most of us would have done a better job.

It's very difficult indeed to see why people want to defend this. The UK deserves better.

Yohoheaveho · 26/01/2021 17:36

What exactly was the point of that update?
to try and placate us peasants I guess?

JiminyLeeCricket · 26/01/2021 17:36

Jesus. Our PM is incoherent.

Yes I thoughtof him too :o
BananaPop2020 · 26/01/2021 17:37

@JiminyLeeCricket it’s just unbelievable isn’t it?

StealthPolarBear · 26/01/2021 17:38

This was a non update

Yohoheaveho · 26/01/2021 17:38

He just doesn’t answer one fucking question
he bats them away doesnt he
it's like a game of 'wiffwaff' to him:(

I agree. Chris Whitty cannot say what he really thinks. He would probably agree with you.
SunshineOutdoors · 26/01/2021 17:38

Ah, thank you. Should have realised there wasn't a real answer given. I just zoned out for a minute.

minibike · 26/01/2021 17:38

@StealthPolarBear

It wasn't an update. It's marking 100,000 deaths
thedancingbear · 26/01/2021 17:38

I would not have made jokes about 'Operation Last Gasp.'

Fucking hell, I'd forgotten about this. What a callous cunt. 100000 deaths and he's taking the piss.

I don't subscribe to Nye Bevan's view that the tories are 'lower than vermin'. I rarely agree with them but very many of them are in politics for the right reasons. I make an exception for Boris.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 26/01/2021 17:39

I also think it was one of the most pointless briefings, other than that he needed to be seen to be acknowledging the 100k milestone. And it did give the journos to ask questions.

Yep.

Captain Hindsight will be on form
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 26/01/2021 17:40

@MaxNormal

Over 100,000 people have dead

Our prime minister had to appear and say something. Not an ignorable amount

ihearttc · 26/01/2021 17:41

I can’t face listening to him anymore unless it’s to tell me things are opening again. However he apparently said something about exams, can anyone let me know what said or where I’d find the transcript?

Travelledtheworld · 26/01/2021 17:42

@adelah spot on.
Thanks for the summary.

Add: Not wasted £££ on Eat out to help out.
Locked down the UK on boxing day when schools were on holiday and many people were already off work.

Calmandmeasured1 · 26/01/2021 17:43

Watching it now - is he actually going to say anything of note,
In excess of 100,000 deaths is worthy of note. The PM has expressed his condolences for this terrible milestone. "It is hard to compute the sorrow contained in that grim statistic".

Quite likely given that the EU are making moves to stop the vaccines made in the EU leaving the EU. Thanks Brexit voters.
You blame the people who voted to leave the EU for the EU's crappy behaviour? Biscuit

Funny, how when he calls for things in advance of the changes the PM makes, the PM calls him this nickname.

I don't think you or the PM understand that hindsight is when you say something should have happened after the event has happened.

Bless
