GP giving vaccine to his mate

So an acquaintance of mine has told a mutual friend that his friend, who is a GP in out local area, called him up at the end of a vaccine session and invited him down to the surgery to get a 'leftover' vaccine. He went and had it, and is telling people how delighted he is about it.

This acquaintance does not really work (independently wealthy/lazy), is in his mid-50s and has no health issues. I am livid. My brother lives in a care home has not had the vaccine yet, and I know lots of other people, myself included, who are working front line jobs or have health conditions that won't be getting it for a long time yet. I see from the press today that this seems to be happening all over. I suspect, knowing this man, that this was pre-planned rather than a last minute thing.

Don't know why I'm posting this really as there is nothing that can be done about it now, but I found out about this last week and I am still so cross!

Good! Glad to hear that GPs are proactively ensuring that doses aren't binned!
Thank you for sharing!

csigeek · 26/01/2021 18:12

Assuming the GP doesn’t personally know all of the people in the local area to call up and offer it to then I think he did the right thing not letting it go to waste.

lavender222 · 26/01/2021 18:34

Glad it didnt go to waste. The place I work acts as vaccination centre and my boss call staff up at the end if the day if he has spares. Sadly, I havent been called yet but I live in hope :-)

Roasted02 · 26/01/2021 18:42

@TillyTopper why shouldn’t we shout about it?

helpIhateclothesshopping · 26/01/2021 18:45

Towards the end of the day, lots of vaccination centres have been frantically ringing round to get anyone to use them up, especially in areas where there has been heavy snow which may have prevented elderly people getting to the centre safely and causing them to ring and cancel. I know a 17 year old who got vaccinated and I can only speculate that the reason he got his was along those lines - maybe working/volunteering at the vaccination centre. Some of my husband's NHS colleagues got calls at the end of the day because they were along the corridor and could get there quickly.

mumoftinyterrors · 26/01/2021 18:46

Don't be stupid OP, I'd rather GPS gave the dose to someone instead of throwing it away like the NHS are demanding.

People need to think logically, but logic seems to be in short supply with anything covid related 🙄

Passenger42 · 26/01/2021 18:48

What a ridiculous post, did you expect the GP to throw it in the bin, get a grip!

yellowmelon · 26/01/2021 18:48

I believe each dose has a few extra mils and they can then get added together to make a full dose at the end of the day. I don't think they can offer this as a vaccine to someone with an appointment - so it maybe an acquaintance, a colleague etc who can come short notice.

louisejxxx · 26/01/2021 18:52

I find this really encouraging that they are trying to make sure there is literally not a drop wasted. Whether the guy is lazy, works or not, doesn’t come in to it - the fact is it’s another person ticked off the list.

saraclara · 26/01/2021 18:57

Absolutely. And another person who won't be able to spread it to others.
bemusedmoose · 26/01/2021 19:00

it happens all over - they get binned after the session is over if unused. So it's bin or phone a friend.

I dont like the fact vulnerable people arent getting them first but if they will only go in the bin otherwise - surely it's better than waste. Though i get the feeling people are getting paid to help dodge the wait just as much as using up the left overs. No one in my area has had it or been offered (NHS staff, Elderly and at risk) yet 30 mins down the road in a different borough they are dishing it out like sweets to anyone who can get there. It's a complete lottery.

niugboo · 26/01/2021 19:04

YABU.

They have to be used up. They can’t practically start going through lists on a computer at the end of the session and inviting people in and hoping they turn up. Plus these people will have slots.

Use in any way they can. It’s one less person on the list.

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:05

Rgars ludicrous

NoKingDingaLingTitsInAbsentia · 26/01/2021 19:07

Honestly if our local vaccine centre wasn't a 40 min walk each way (not getting on the germ bus!) I'd be hanging around there every evening in the hope I got asked if I wanted to go in and take one of their spare ones!

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:08

Thats

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:10

I'm waiting for my appointment, apparently I can have one due to where I work. Have to drive 75miles to get it mind

Nhsisfucked · 26/01/2021 19:11

I could see the outrage on here if someone had a last minute call to get there within ten mins etc, it would be called a stupid ridiculous system etc. We are literally calling anyone we can at the end of the day, fire, police, funeral homes etc, like everyone has said it’s better than going to waste. If there was a ‘spares’ list it would need changing daily as it would be the people already on the list who is due to have it any day anyway!? There’s enough work to do to get the appointments booked it, repeating the same information over and over again.
I actually think we are doing an amazing job so far, it’s such a mammoth task!! People just need to wind there necks in and wait their turn!!

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:13

Some nhs workers have been told to wait till off for two days to get vaccine so if ill can be ill in their own time.

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:16

My friends sister works front line as a nurse london area. When vaccine arrived, all the consultant's and management lined up. Nurses treating the covid had to wait

thebestnamehere · 26/01/2021 19:26

@LoafEater you need to get a grip love

Yourcatisnotsorry · 26/01/2021 19:30

I’ve seen several instances of this in the handful of people I know who’ve got the vaccine now. It’s pure corruption. Have an open standby list of key workers, as soon as you get a no show let someone grab it not ‘doctors mates, councilors mates etc. (my examples have been council spares)

ADealingMummy · 26/01/2021 19:35

I know of a gp surgery who vaccinated the local dentist. This was so encouraging to hear about.

angela99999 · 26/01/2021 19:40

I had my first jab (Pfizer) on Sunday, though I'm just under 70. I was offered it when they called to arrange my husband's appointment - he's in his mid 70's and has a chronic heart problem.

We've recently moved house so are new to the practice and aren't "mates" with anybody there; as others have suggested I'm sure that they're just trying not to waste any of the Pfizer vaccine.
I suppose some people may suggest that I should feel guilty but I'm honestly just relieved to have had the first dose. We have quite a few more elderly neighbours who go to the same GP practice who have all already been vaccinated so I'm guessing that our local vaccination hub is doing well with their schedules.

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:44

I heard boris's father got both doses of the vaccine.
So glad we live in such an un-corrupt country.

Ddot · 26/01/2021 19:45

I had to email my MP to get my 91 year old mother done
