GP giving vaccine to his mate

So an acquaintance of mine has told a mutual friend that his friend, who is a GP in out local area, called him up at the end of a vaccine session and invited him down to the surgery to get a 'leftover' vaccine. He went and had it, and is telling people how delighted he is about it.

This acquaintance does not really work (independently wealthy/lazy), is in his mid-50s and has no health issues. I am livid. My brother lives in a care home has not had the vaccine yet, and I know lots of other people, myself included, who are working front line jobs or have health conditions that won't be getting it for a long time yet. I see from the press today that this seems to be happening all over. I suspect, knowing this man, that this was pre-planned rather than a last minute thing.

Don't know why I'm posting this really as there is nothing that can be done about it now, but I found out about this last week and I am still so cross!

@Pyewhacket

An acquaintance of a friend of a friend Hmm

Thats not what my post actually said. He is actually an ex-boyfriend of mine who I lived with for while a long time ago, but we are now more acquaintances than the friends we were for about 25 years, so yes I do actually know he has no serious health conditions.

SIL is having her first one tomorrow. She's 42, no health issues and works in an office, for the NHS but no where near a hospital and is currently working from home.

My parents are 78 and 79, they've not had theirs yet Angry

Obviously I dont want any of the doses to go to waste, but the GP couldn't think of anyone on his list of patients who would be more medically in need? No diabetics, no one with a LD or asthma on his books? Ok, fine, its great he got it then.

Throwing the vaccine in the bin aside, I can’t quite work out of this is 3rd or 4th (or even 5th?!) hand information. Just a tad unreliable don’t you think OP? I’d untwist your big girl pants.

Maybe he knew he could get there quick?!

How else do you expect GPs to deal with ‘no shows’. Any vaccine not used within a couple of hours has to be thrown away.

there are bigger things to worry about

Far better it goes to anyone than goes to waste. It’s irrelevant that you think he’s lazy tbh.

An acquaintance of a friend of a friend Hmm

Exactly what I thought. The most truthful of sources.

Does he also have a cousins friends dog who works for the MoD?

Right, yes, all GPs have got time to go through their entire patient list at the end of the day, when they know there's vaccine leftover Hmm

My dad is about to start chemo for cancer. His GP friend snuck him in to give him the last dose in the vial as he said it wouldn’t work so well once he started chemo. My dad would be eligible for the vaccine in the next group but, for the sake of a few weeks, it would work less well for him then. My 70 year old nan doesn’t have to leave her home as we deliver everything to her. My dad now has to go to a Covid ridden hospital every day for 5 weeks for chemo. Damn right he should get it before her. Sometimes you have to do what is right rather than what the incompetent government tells you to do. All people about to start chemo should get the vaccine before they start and I’m glad my dad’s GP made that call on his own.

Even if it wasn't about expediency with leftover vaccine wouldn't have a problem with it. GPs and other frontline HCPs have gone through a lot this year. Consider them clapped.

Around here they haven’t finished over 80’s yet. Yet I know people who have also had the vaccine with no underlying health issues as they are classed very loosely as frontline NHS workers. Yet neither works directly for the NHS one is a private Funeral Director (also all the staff at the undertakers have also been vaccinated).

Yes, it’s fine he got it. ‘Not lazy’ isn’t ever going to be a criteria for getting vaccinated, so it’s probably best to accept that now or you are going to be very angry during the entire roll out. Which really won’t be good for you.

That's good they have been vaccinated, it is unknown how long a dead body is infectious with Covid for, and we need the service they offer to keep running.

Much better than it going straight in the bin.

pinkgin85 · 25/01/2021 10:12

I'd be more angry if they were wasting vaccines. Honestly the quicker they vaccinate anyone and everyone the better!

'I know that sounds unfair but it is still better than binning it.'

That is not the only option. They have access to all patients records they should ring the next person on the list. If they've time to ring their pals, they've time to click on patients records.

Rather this that it being thrown out to be honest. Let's just get people vaccinated!

@ScottishStootie......

I didn't say get added under someone else's name, i said in place of. If someone doesn't turn up for theirs then they can replace their details with the person getting it, which is happening. All i was meaning was i hope they are all doing it by the book. I think you're the one being ridiculous.....talk about jumping the gun.

Is there really no middle way between GP's mates and the bin?

I'm surprised this is the system and disappointed that they're not going about it better.

Sound like pure jealousy to me really... Surely it's better than it going in the bin. If your brother still hasn't had his vaccine by the mid febuary, (when they said all care home people would be done by) then I may be a little more angry.

If I worked in a school, I'd be asking my GP to call me if there was a spare dose

We have the third best vaccine rollout in the world and the best in Europe... But you are dissapointed with the system?

Far better than wasting the dose. I know of a teenager who has been vaccinated. I'd rather that than it was thrown away
