Riots against lockdown in Europe

818 replies

The scenes of young people burning down a COVID testing facility in the Netherlands and burning the Danish PM at a stake in protest against lockdown have really shaken me. Would it happen here? Who is organising this? Fascists? Sometimes I read comments against lockdown on here and I think such a mood is being primed.

Oh, give over. Anyone who thinks rioting is self-destructive (it is) belongs in North Korea? Talk about utter overreaction.[/quote]
No, anyone who thinks locking people in enclosures for two weeks and spraying them with water cannons belongs in north korea - you really think thats an okay way to treat people?

i think you KNOW what my comment was in relation to so dont make yourself look silly and make out that it was a perfectly innocent comment

QuantumQuality · 25/01/2021 12:31

It’s not the left, it’s fascists. I actually recognised some of the faces from anti-refugee protests. They’re basically football hooligans looking for a fight.

joystir59 · 25/01/2021 12:33

Hopefully not burning the actual Danish PM at the stake?

trulydelicious · 25/01/2021 12:34

@toconclude

Just like labelling anything you don't like as "The Left

As I said up thread, 'The Left' has a definition. Look it up in the dictionary if you're unsure

Bartlet · 25/01/2021 12:34

@ineedaholidaynow. They’ve done it for a year - how much longer do we all need to live in limbo to ensure that your mum doesn’t get covid?

LastTrainEast · 25/01/2021 12:37

Rent-A-Riot. Not that you have to pay them for the most part but there are a bunch of people who will riot against anything you like if they get to get together to bond and smash things/shout a lot.

But this will surely confuse those on MN who claim that only the UK has lock-downs and only because Boris hates them personally and/or wants to destroy the country.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/01/2021 12:37

But burning down a COVID testing centre? That is just psychotic

Well I guess it's one way of reducing the numbers Wink

Apologies for the flippancy, and of course it's a dreadful thing to do, but like so many I'm hardly surprised; you simply can't lock down an entire population for nearly a year and expect no kick back

Furonthecoat put it much better than I can though

formerbabe · 25/01/2021 12:38

@ineedaholidaynow

I like my DS and I like my DM. We are all suffering in this pandemic, but that is what happens in pandemics. My DS wouldn’t want his grandmother to be left to die so he can do his GCSEs. He certainly wouldn’t be rioting for that. And my DM doesn’t have a huge house, large pension and won’t be signing up for a cruise. She has had her life hugely impacted by lockdown, but that doesn’t seem to matter to some people on here as supposedly she has had her life so should sacrifice it, literally, for others. What age should that sacrifice start? Should I buy her a job lot of tablets so she can kill herself as her life is ruining her grandson’s life?
Im sure if push cam e to shove, you'd choose your ds over your DM though?

Anyway, losing a grandparent when you're a teenager isn't such an unusual or tragic event that it would warrant sacrificing your future over.

trulydelicious · 25/01/2021 12:39

@QuantumQuality

Wow! You must have photographic memory when it comes to recognising faces at a (considerable) distance, sure. Hmm

You're a delight

formerbabe · 25/01/2021 12:42

Just pragmatic and realistic. Grandparents die. I sincerely hope everyone experiences losing one... because the only alternative is you die before them...which really is tragic.

trulydelicious · 25/01/2021 12:42

@LastTrainEast

Rent-A-Riot. Not that you have to pay them

A lot of them are indeed paid (money, future favours, condoning 'debt' etc)

wanderings · 25/01/2021 12:43

Take note, Saint Boris. Do you want riots on your watch for a second time? (Remember "Boris, where's your broom?" just after the London riots, when he was mayor?) I'm surprised this didn't happen much earlier; there's only so long the government can keep toying with the public's heads.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 25/01/2021 12:43

former babe

whilst stunned at what you have just written, I also feel there are varying degrees eg is the GP terminally ill, in good health?
Then we get on a very slippery slope don't we....killing off GP when they could have decades left - to ensure top grades for a student with decades left?

Its all about exam grades and this is what we have become as a society. Bump off granny to get your B.

Downriver · 25/01/2021 12:44

I don't buy the idea that it is a bunch of chemistry and art history students, pissed off at university fees, spontaneously deciding to burn down a testing centre. They don't have uni fees in Europe anyway!. I think it is whipped up by the US influenced far right who hate the state and want to produce chaos in uncertain times. I am rather terrified at how much empathy for the arsonists there is here and how much misunderstanding there is of the actual situation of elderly people in this country who get the lowest state pensions in Europe. Cruises, for fuck sake!

OP posts:
QuantumQuality · 25/01/2021 12:44

@trulydelicious Not really. I thought it looked like a similar looking crowd so I compared the fairly clear photos of both in the local paper. What makes you think the photos were taken from a distance? They weren’t hiding, they were publically rioting in a city centre.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/01/2021 12:44

Do we need to take this further. It keeps being said that the younger generation are going to be paying for this for years. My DS won’t be working to pay for my DM’s pension but he will be to pay for mine and for the NHS to pay for my future healthcare needs. So to reduce that burden should all parents kill themselves before they reach pensionable age, as we have had everything and the youth have lost everything. If we get ill we should refuse healthcare as that is another financial burden we are putting on our children.

Beaniecats · 25/01/2021 12:44

It is happening here it just doesn't get reported
Relief that people are fighting back tbh

PhilCornwall1 · 25/01/2021 12:44

Only those who have had the vaccine have been microchipped.

Are you sure?

What about us CEV lot that have ended up with the Vitamin D from the government through the post. Is it really Vitamin D, what's really going on here??? 🤔🤔🤔

Removes tinfoil hat.

boobybum · 25/01/2021 12:44

@furonthecoat Great post. It breaks my heart that my child is accruing close to £60k worth of debt and completely missing out on the proper uni experience. They already missed loads of teaching before Covid because of the strikes.
Looking on the bright side - they’ll probably never find a job that pays enough for them to have to pay back their student loan.Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 25/01/2021 12:45

Gosh hadn’t seen this

formerbabe · 25/01/2021 12:45

Don't be ridiculous. No one is suggesting the mass murder of the elderly. Just suggesting that decimating the economy, education and mental health of the next generation in order to prolong life at all costs is probably not the best idea.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 25/01/2021 12:46

Sorry but its just as likely to the far left - I find it strange people don't accept this?

Or just people who are fed up and some left or right mixed in?

2bazookas · 25/01/2021 12:46

@carlaCox

burning the Danish PM at a stake in protest

Probably should clarify you mean burning a picture of the Danish PM at the stake! I read this and thought "what?!?!".

Quite.

OP might need to re-think our own enthusiasm for burning political effigies, aka Guy Fawkes Night, "bonfire night" on November 5th.

feelingquitehopeful · 25/01/2021 12:47

truly That just isn't right, I am sorry to say. The lockdown sadly does not end when the infections go down and hospital admissions slow - you would think that would be the end wouldn't you? But no, SAGE are now talking about waiting until ALL the over 50s are vaccinated!! It seems to me like they intend to extend this as long as possible until the whole country is vaccinated even....so the hospital admission rate is by the by it now appears to me.

We were told we were locked down to save our hospitals. That covid would spread whatever we do, but the important thing is to ensure our hospitals can cope.

This message is slowly being replaced with something else entirely, and your mental health, your kids health, education, businesses, livelihoods, mortgages and life itself is all irrelevant
