Vaccine priority group 6 and high BMI

ProbablyFault · 24/01/2021 11:07

Does anyone know whether individuals with high BMI are included in vaccine priority group 6, and (if so) what the BMI cut off is? I'm looking into this for a family member, but struggling to find any official info. Thanks.

Is it not BMI of 40+ that is a risk factor

Mancity100 · 24/01/2021 11:10

Dont wanna sound harsh but best way to beat covid for them would be lose weight

MrsBlobby43 · 24/01/2021 11:13

Bmi of 40+ is a risk but as far as I understand there are no plans to include them to be vaccinated earlier. Since March I've reduced my BMI from 48 to 31. Has your relative been trying to reduce theirs?

dementedpixie · 24/01/2021 11:14

Nhs has bmi of 40 as moderate risk

As it's listed in the pre existing conditions then I'm guessing yes although I know that's not official. I'm lucky enough to have a high BMI and a condition so that hopefully bumps me up a bit Wink

Wow bet they didn't know that Hmm
rosie1959 · 24/01/2021 11:17

Was chatting to my DH about this as although he has a BMI of over 40 he rarely visits the GP.
I presume they would have his weight somewhere. He did say his records should show he is a BFB

Wow, well done, that’s brilliant! Was that diet or exercise or both? But yes, it is 40+. I checked a sim a bit porky and have very bad asthma. But my bmi is a lot lower and so I don’t think I’ll qualify until the vaccine program gets to my age group. So focusing on being less porky (easier said than done when in peri though Wink.....)
AKissAndASmile · 24/01/2021 11:20

BMI 40+ would put you in group 6

ProbablyFault · 24/01/2021 11:34

Thanks for the helpful replies.

I'm not sure whether they've been trying to lose weight, and I suppose I don't feel that comfortable asking them. Just trying to work out what the official guidelines say about this.

OP posts:
Drinkarsefeck · 24/01/2021 11:38

Agree, bmi over 40 puts them in the cv group, so group 6 for the vaccine.

ProbablyFault · 24/01/2021 11:40

Can someone who thinks that this puts people into priority group 6 possibly link to where this is stated? I think it does too, but I can't find the link that says this for the life on me! Thank you.

Wow, now get this poster a job as a government health advisor! How wonderful of you to solve all their problems in one little comment, I doubt any overweight person ever had the idea to just lose it. Hmm

JFC if people are over 40 BMI there are some serious physical or mental health problems that led to it. Nobody gets that big just because they like a bit of cake for fucks sake.

ProbablyFault · 24/01/2021 11:43

Thanks HairyFloppins, that's perfect.

Just common sense, eat correct food and stay healthy would solve a lot of health issues

What’s wrong with Mancity100’s point? It’s true 🤷‍♀️ God forbid on mumsnet that any comment on excess weight should ever just be accepted. Not every overweight person has got to that point due to some complex, deep-seated issue. Some just eat too much - and I include myself in that category Grin

To answer the OPs question - GP practices code their patients according to particular conditions or comorbidities. So for example if all people with caring responsibilities are included in group 7, say, then as long as that person is coded as having a caring responsibility at their GP practice, then when the GP practices “pull off“ everyone in the group 7 cohort from their computer systems, people with a caring responsibility would be included in that Smile

Chaotic45 · 24/01/2021 12:13

Do GP's know the BMI of their patients?

It’s a good job you mentioned this because so bet they weren’t aware of this.
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 24/01/2021 12:19

BMI 40+ are in group 6.

Anyone who thinks their GP isn't aware of their weight should phone them and check.

I did this. Had to go in and get weighed but at least it is now (hopefully) on their system.

I am working on losing weight and exercising more so hopefully will get my BMI down below 40 fairly soon. Whether that is before I'm vaccinated or not I don't know

AvonCallingBarksdale · 24/01/2021 12:20

They wouldn’t necessarily know the BMI - yes if you’d had your over 40 MOT or another reason to have it measured by your GP. A lot of the recommendations from the JCVI and .gov don’t always teach the GP practices or are interpreted as just that - ie recommendations. It’s not as straightforward as your BMI is 50, therefore automatically you’re in this particular cohort. And vaccine stratification is done at national, not local level.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 24/01/2021 12:21

Reach not teach 🙄

What a ridiculous comment, you know exactly what's wrong with it, don't pretend you don't. It reduces all weight issues down to one simple solution. The reality is you are in the minority with the reasons behind your weight gain because if it was that straight forward then this country wouldn't have an obesity epidemic would it?

Morbid obesity should be treated as the illness it is not shrugged off with an explanation that is too simple even for my primary school child to believe.

Rowenasemolina · 24/01/2021 12:31

Another poster here that had gone from BMI of 40+ to BMI 25 during the Covid era.

Really, there is no excuse. I couldn’t be bothered to do anything about my obesity for decades, but that was a selfish luxury we no longer have.

Excepting people taking steroids, etc fir asthma, and other GENUINE medical reasons, it’s ridiculous that any of the population are still very obese.

Just lose the weight. That’s all. Just lose it.

How could anyone live with themselves taking a priority vaccination simply because they are fat?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 24/01/2021 12:34

Love the juxtaposition of Daybath and Rowenasemolina posts Grin
Daybath, did you find all of my post ridiculous or just the bit you disagree with?
