Is there a reason we are the country that's been worst hit economically and had the worst death rates

Trying to work out why, do we have a more elderly and unhealthy population? Has the whole thing been managed badly? Should we have resisted lockdown? We've ended up with the double whammy why is it?

@Kazzyhoward no not fewer people would have died but at least the economy would have been saved so one out of two ain't bad! (Not my view but arguable nonetheless)

The UK locked down at the same rate of infection as other countries in Europe. You can bash it all you like, but it's a fact

Yep better to look at numbers

Sarahandduck18 · 24/01/2021 13:28

What about smoking rates? Have they had no impact?

Forgetmenot157 · 24/01/2021 13:35

I think if every country collected and reported data accurately and in the same way there is no chance we would even be in the top 10.

The issue is that people want answers etc now. Whe. The real success stories during all this won't be known for 5-10 years.

Again that is just not true and not based in fact. UK was allowing concerts and sports events to go ahead at a time when it had a higher infection rate than other countries who had banned mass gatherings. The govt didn't even shut down many of these events in the end, the industry did it themselves because they could see it was unsafe! The Premier League being a clear example.

I can assure you it is. Infact, by rate of infection, the UK locked down before Italy

Lockdowns

Italy- 9th March-number of infections (total)- 9,172

UK- 23rd of March-number of infections (total) 6,656

UK was allowing concerts and sports events to go ahead at a time when it had a higher infection rate than other countries who had banned mass gatherings.

No it wasn't

Same for other countries

Agreed. Many governments with many agendas and national pride to grapple with plus the optics of appearing to be in control to calm their masses particularly in developing countries.

It will be years before anyone can start assessing the true scope of this event. Hindsight will be in abundance.

www.gov.uk/government/speeches/pm-statement-on-coronavirus-16-march-2020

From Mar 16th Johnson clearly set out guidance to avoid mixing etc with further rules a week later.

'We need people to start working from home where they possibly can. And you should avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues'.

They said continually we were behind Italy so when the actual enforced lockdown occurred it had to be at the right time to be most effective and of course for people to comply. We aren't China or South Korea, strong compliance like Mar and Apr in the UK as all know was very shortlived.

Threads like this always being out the judgemental cunts who can't get it into their heads that older people, fat people, people who dare to have long term conditions or disabled have a right to live and a right to be treated by the NHS which they also pay for.

Still for the Tory apologists it is better than admitting that we're in this mess because they kept voting in a political party that systematically stripped the public sector bare over a decade, so we were caught on the hop with a health sector (including public health who are the best people to manage a pandemic) that is unable to cope.

The reason why this country continues to do so badly is simple. You voted in a totally corrupt and incompetent government based on a slogan that is rapidly being shown up to be the lie that it always was.

Still carry on blaming people for daring to get old because that's a lot easier.

I'm not being ironic at all. I'm judging the people who think that older, fatter, disabled, ill people are worth less than they are. And I find them to be despicable, disgusting human beings.
