Anyone else think that our Government may be using the new variant as a bit of a cover up/excuse to disguise the absolutely shit show that was allowing Christmas Day mixing in England?

Maybe!!!

No

hopeishere · 23/01/2021 17:26

Not a cover up but convenient way to prolong lockdown as it's obvious people won't voluntarily modify their behaviour.

noblegiraffe · 23/01/2021 17:27

No, the infection rates show that there was a massive issue before Christmas Day.

The government fucked up massively, but it's not clear that Christmas Day mixing had any particularly disproportionate impact compared to what was already going on.

Beaniecats · 23/01/2021 17:27

They're using fear to force compliance seems to have backfired this time

EngTech · 23/01/2021 17:28

Conspiracy theories have a habit of contradicting each other 👍

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/01/2021 17:30

No cases started rising well before Christmas. In our area cases doubles week by week early December

noblegiraffe · 23/01/2021 17:30

If you want to see the impact of the new variant, just look at school attendance data for London and the SE in the couple of weeks before Christmas. In Kent, for example, last week of term saw only about a third of kids in secondary schools were able to attend. It was worse in some areas of London.

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:30

But in my head... so Xmas day 25th, takes day 5-20 days to get symptoms, then about 20 to get very ill and die- now we have highest death rate we’ve ever had about 30 days later. !

OP posts:
OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:31

Sorry 5-10 days to get symptoms!

noblegiraffe · 23/01/2021 17:35

Infection levels were rising generally before Christmas though and the graphs don't show a massive upswing after Christmas. We are seeing the effect of infection levels at Christmas, but they were high then anyway.

Government cover up...
OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:36

Ok maybe I want to rename my thread... Blaming new variant instead of admitting Government is shit and fucked up a million times

OP posts:
OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:37

@noblegiraffe

Ok thank you.

But maybe those younger ones weren’t seeing elderly/vulnerable relatives and then did at Christmas... so death rate now crazy high?

I assume you mean the government that heads up the whole of the Uk and not just England?

But yes, I do agree. They are trying to put the fear of God into us all. I don't think Boris is very credible now after yesterday's announcement

x2boys · 23/01/2021 17:42

How are they covering up ? They have always said January and February would be awful months ,people would never have listened if they had stopped Xmas day mixing completely ,look at the outrage over Eid

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:46

@boxingdayclearout

Yes I do, but I only really followed the England Christmas rules so didn’t want to say U.K. as know they all had different rules!

OP posts:
OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:46

outrage Would be far better than this many deaths a day!!

In all fairness if anyone contracted COVID over Christmas because they mixed households, that was purely down to them nothing to do with the Government. It was pretty obvious it would not be a sensible thing to do unless you took additional precautions, like all self isolating beforehand

maddiemookins16mum · 23/01/2021 17:52

Anyone who mixed over Christmas has only one person to blame....themselves.

Exactly, the risks were made clear. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you have to.
x2boys · 23/01/2021 17:54

Yes exactly @ineedaholidaynow ,unless you have been living under a rock for the past year ,most people knew Xmas mixing was always going to be problematic ,the government kept saying just because you can doesn't mean you should ,people also need to take some personal responsibility.

Sittingonabench · 23/01/2021 17:56

I don’t think it’s conspiracy but I do think they are taking advantage of the situation... in the same way they used COVID to cover up for Brexit...

x2boys · 23/01/2021 17:58

And even if the Government had said no Xmas mixing at all ,you only have to read some of the threads on here to know lots of people wouldn't have compiled ,short of locking people in their homes I'm not sure how we can prevent people who refuse to follow the rules

OverTheRainbow88 · 23/01/2021 17:59

taking advantage of the situation..

Thank you, this was the phrase I was looking for

No. The numbers for Christmas weren't actually that bad in the end. We would be where we are now anyway.

To try to get people to comply for a bit longer yes.

Not quite. It's being over egged to disguise the fuck up of having London and other areas in tier 2 through December and the fuck ups over waiting too long to take action when they knew the variant was spreading fast.
