Wearing a mask going for a walk

Would you wear a mask going for a walk?

I haven't worn a mask while walking to date but I'm thinking about changing this from today. Going for a walk later on. When I am on the quite road, I won't be wearing a mask. When I join on the main road and the main walking path I will put on a mask then because its a small path and keeping 2 metres apart from passerbys will be hard.

Nope.

BillyAndTheSillies · 23/01/2021 14:15

More and more people are wearing them on the streets near me in London so I had started as well.

At first it was just me leaving it on once I'd left a shop for the walk home but it just became second nature to keep it on. I don't if we go to our local forest where social distancing is easily done.

Cardboardeaux · 23/01/2021 14:20

No, absolutely not. And they will be going in the bin as soon as no longer legally mandated.

mumwon · 23/01/2021 14:33

I wore one the other day when walking on narrow path but it caused me problems with the constant lenses misting up - while it happens a bit in shops the temperature difference outside makes it much worse
I wonder if the lady who jumped off the path wore glasses
Can anyone tell me if people get issues with contact lenses - out of curiosity?

SmudgeButt · 23/01/2021 14:37

I don't wear a mask but I also don't go for walks so I guess that's ok.

Remmy123 · 23/01/2021 14:37

No - no need

AuldAlliance · 23/01/2021 14:45

I wear a mask in the street because it's mandatory here (not UK) and I can be fined €135 if I don't.
I walk along a canal path where it's not obligatory: 80% of people have masks on or pop theirs on when they draw near.

I wear contact lenses (hard gas permeable) which never steam up. I've never known them to steam up, hadn't realised lenses could. Maybe other kinds are really different...

U8myufo · 23/01/2021 14:52

No I don't. It's mask creep. The only time I would is if I was on a shopping street in between shops and couldn't be bothered taking it on and off. I don't see anybody on my walks anyway, but even if I did passing them briefly on a path wouldn't worry me. Although I'm sure the risks aren't zero, I feel they must be minimal. Shopping streets, or where I was planning on having an extended conversation with someone outside and couldn't distance would be the only time I would wear one outdoors. Each to their own though.

2020BogOff · 23/01/2021 15:01

Does anyone really think you get infected by briefly passing someone outside?

Personally I think it's at work (which lots have to do), inside in supermarkets and other places that are allowed to be open, in medical settings like hospitals and pharmacies or at home socially with (legally allowed) family.

PinkFondantFancy · 23/01/2021 15:09

Absolutely not. I'm not convinced they do anything indoors even, but wear it because we're required to. The second it's no longer required I'll be binning it. I won't be wearing one outside. It's where I draw the line

CornishYarg · 23/01/2021 15:12

No. I'm asthmatic and while I'm OK wearing a mask inside, I would really struggle to wear one while walking, especially if I'm going at a brisk pace. I would have to slow my walking speed right down to be able to breathe in one, meaning I wouldn't really be getting any exercise value. And frankly getting a bit of exercise is the only reason I'm trudging the streets in freezing weather!

I avoid anywhere really crowded and I'm not worried about the risk while I quickly walk past someone.

inappropriateraspberry · 23/01/2021 15:16

@LucilleTheVampireBat

Hell no.

The "it keeps my face warm" people - how did you go on before rona? Have you heard of scarves?

But I wrap a scarf around my neck, not my face. I'd have to wrap it quite tight to stay across my nose and mouth, which wouldn't be comfortable!
Taylrse · 23/01/2021 15:25

Never outside.
The chances of catching covid outside are very unlikely.

Maybe hold your breath as you walk past people! It's what I do with smokers ;)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/01/2021 15:34

No and I will be binning them as soon as they are no longer mandatory. I only wear one on the rare occasions I go into a shop, it goes on as I go in and comes off the minute I'm out the door.

I'll never understand people saying they are second nature. I have to keep one in my coat pocket as I never remember to pick them up.

PurpleDaisies · 23/01/2021 15:35

No. The risk outside is tiny unless you’re in a packed crowd.

NameChange84 · 23/01/2021 15:38

@evouk

I think 99% of ppl who wear a mask on a walk with nobody else around do it because they think it protects them which it doesn't as your eyes are still exposed
I also wear wraparound sunglasses to protect my eyes.
McCorona · 23/01/2021 15:39

I keep a mask in my pocket. I don't wear it outside as a matter of course but if I'm feeling uncomfortable in terms of thee being too many people in the vicinity, I will put it on. On a sunny Saturday afternoon like today, the park is very busy.

HippoOnMyRoofEatingCake · 23/01/2021 15:49

Does anyone really think you get infected by briefly passing someone outside?

I don't think many people do think that, no. But I guess if you live in a town or city where multiple people are passing multiple people, the certainty of that is lower.

I think most countries that have made masks mandatory in all public places just did so out of simplicity. I definitely think one of the biggest problem's with the UK's approach has been it's bizarre need to over-complicate everything and constantly change the rules. People get confused and are more likely to bend rules, etc.

In my country, they just made masks mandatory in public at the end of March. And said don't meet up with people you don't live with.

In the UK, it's all "Masks don't work. Okay, they do but only on public transport. Ok and in shops too." as well as the weird support bubbles of 6, unless you live alone then it's 4 plus your age divided by 2, unless it's Christmas then it's 3 more than it was in August if you were outside but 2 less than if you're inside. And the list goes on.

And don't get me started on the slogans! Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, Save BHS!

Why so scathing? They’re not harming you, probably quite the opposite. Masks protect others. Maybe be appreciative instead?

One of the 1% here. Wear a visor too and yep, I feel like an idiot 😂 I tried sunglasses for a while but walking only after dark, I tripped up a LOT.

With A CEV husband, it’s that or no exercise though.

Meggymoo777 · 24/01/2021 01:01

I wear a snood OP! Keeps my neck warm when out walking and then I just pull it up over my face when I'm approaching others walking. They're super handy for walks!

mellomore · 24/01/2021 01:48

I don't. We're in central London so the streets/parks can get busy, but I wear my mask where it's legally required, and don't wear it otherwise. It's not always possible to maintain 2m distance on the pavement but I always make an effort to walk on the furthest side (but not stepping into the road). I don't stop to chat to anyone or go on walks with anyone outside my household, I'm always passing people quickly. It's more common to see them outside on the streets here though, and some members of my family do. Our household doesn't have anyone in the 50+ or vulnerable category.

BunnyBoilerRhian · 24/01/2021 02:15

Not usyally but when the shops used to be open i was yold it was safer to leave it in than keep touchjng it and my face putting it on and off between shops.
I have noticed more and more people wearing them on my afternoon walks.

It's nice to see people putting some effort in. Unlike the mindless twats that just walk straight at me, dont think to pause when I can't move off thecoavement to stand in the road because of traffic.

The ones wearing masks are the ones that also make the effort to social distance as we pass on our walk a or thank me/acknowledge when I've waited somewhere or crossed the road or something to ensure a safe distance is kept.

I do wonder if the mouth steam that's evidently visable now it's so cold, and we can all see how far it floats and how long it hangs in the air, might be part of the reason more people are mask wearing outside.

GlowingOrb · 24/01/2021 02:25

Anywhere I will be less than 2m from others, i where a mask. A walk through my neighborhood doesn’t require a mask.

Tavannach · 24/01/2021 02:43

I wear a mask when I'm out for a walk. There are places that are still quite busy here (inner London). It's handy to have it on if I meet one of the neighbours, and it keeps my face warm.
