Wearing a mask going for a walk

Would you wear a mask going for a walk?

I haven't worn a mask while walking to date but I'm thinking about changing this from today. Going for a walk later on. When I am on the quite road, I won't be wearing a mask. When I join on the main road and the main walking path I will put on a mask then because its a small path and keeping 2 metres apart from passerbys will be hard.

I meant more crazy Grin

I wear a scarf wrapped round the lower part of my face for warmth at the moment. It's a happy side effect that it serves a double purposes as a mask.

HereComesATractor · 23/01/2021 13:20

People are definitely more likely now to put their mask on before they pass me outside when I have the children with me, even though it’s very easy to keep more than two metres apart. Many older people in particular are really fearful of children now.

EileenGC · 23/01/2021 13:20

Depends where you are.

Countries like Spain or Italy, it's compulsory everywhere.
Where I live in Germany, we have certain streets where it's also compulsory to wear a mask because they're really busy. Inner city I must say.

I don't wear one if I don't have to. I wear one on the streets that require it. I also sometimes put it on if it's very cold and windy, helps keep my face warm.

HereComesATractor · 23/01/2021 13:21

@Akire

If you live in a built up area and 1 in 20 people that pass you could have covid I’d rather not take the risk.

If you can catch in a supermarket where everyone is wearing a mask, why is it unbelievable that you can get when someone passes you outdoors. Or indeed stands behind you in Tesco queue for 20min

inappropriateraspberry · 23/01/2021 13:22

Maybe,if nothing else it would keep your face warm!

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/01/2021 13:24

I certainly do if I'm walking along a city street (I live in central London) I wouldn't if I lived somewhere rural and was unlikely to get near another person, obviously.

Akire · 23/01/2021 13:25

But the virus doesn’t instantly combust when it touches the air. If I sneeze a metre away from you indoors and outdoors you are still going get most of the spray. Unless it’s blowing a Gale and the wind is going in the right direction!

AlwaysLatte · 23/01/2021 13:25

Not on walks near me (fields and woodland) but if I walk into the village where I might pass others on the paths I do.

Lipz · 23/01/2021 13:25

Where I live it's mandatory to wear them outside when it's busy. At first it felt weird and unnecessary but the other day while out for a walk I did encounter a busy narrow street and for a good bit along was very close to others and some were sneezing, coughing or chatting etc and I had forgotten my mask and I actually found myself holding my breath 😳. It's second nature now just to wear one, I actually feel weird without one. It's not doing any harm, wearing one, if it reduces the risk even by a tiny percentage then it's worth it.

Personally I hate wearing a scarf however much my asthma nurse has been trying to convince me to wear one over my mouth and nose during winter. I find masks much easier.

Turn out it much easier to breathe when it’s cold if I’m wearing one. 😂

AnaisNun · 23/01/2021 13:26

Only on very busy pavements - particularly where we have lots of queues outside the shops on the Main Street.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/01/2021 13:26

WalrusWife

There hasn't previously been enough studies to prove the value of masks to protect the wearer. That doesn't mean they dont. But If you think about it if a mask stops a virus particle going one way, it's going to work the other too. After all a virus can't suddenly say, "hang on, this mask is the right way round goddamit I wont go through it then if only it was the wrong way round".Grin

Maybe worth giving people a little more space generally if you find people are jumping dramatically out your path regularly.

VillaMia · 23/01/2021 13:27

I wouldn't as always just walk in open countryside, where it's easy to socially distance. I am starting to see more people in masks on my walks though.

If I was in a busy location - walking between shops, etc., then I would.

Reallybadidea · 23/01/2021 13:27

I really quite like having a mask on outside to keep my face warm.

LaBellina · 23/01/2021 13:28

No unless its very crowded.

But I believe it's unhealthy to stay indoors most of the time and when you are outside, to breathe trough a mask. I'm a firm believer in fresh air 😅. So if I can keep enough distance from others I wouldn't. I only wear a mask when I'm inside a place with a roof over it or as said before any crowded place outside.

GothamGirl1970 · 23/01/2021 13:28

Yes but I live in London

notangelinajolie · 23/01/2021 13:30

I live rurally and don't drive so my walking route is limited to country lanes with no foot path, muddy fields or the canal tow path. I choose the latter so I wear a mask because there tends to be a lot of runners.

ScrapThatThen · 23/01/2021 13:31

I would consider it if walking with a friend because the new variant is more transmissible and we would be next to each other for a long time. Or if in a busy space. I don't think you are being completely over the top.

BananaPop2020 · 23/01/2021 13:31

I personally cannot wait till we can throw masks away forever. I absolutely hate the things.

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 13:32

Hazelnutlatteplease - luckily the power of masks doesn’t require belief in order to work. I wear them in supermarkets. That’s what the law required from me. The propaganda has been very much “I wear a mask to protect you.”

DH and I always walk in single file when passing people. I’m not going to start jumping into roads, other people can if they want. But surely they are safe wearing a mask without jumping into the road if masks are so great.

Chickychickydodah · 23/01/2021 13:35

I wear a mask as soon as i walkout of my door, only time I take it off is in my car when I’m alone.

TempsPerdu · 23/01/2021 13:39

No I wouldn’t, and especially not when I’m out walking with toddler DD. She needs to see my face.

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 13:39

The people who live opposite me wear a mask to put the bins out at 10pm at night when nobody is around. Each to their own I guess.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/01/2021 13:40

Absolutely not. I want to breathe in fresh air when I'm outdoors.
