Wearing a mask going for a walk

Would you wear a mask going for a walk?

I haven't worn a mask while walking to date but I'm thinking about changing this from today. Going for a walk later on. When I am on the quite road, I won't be wearing a mask. When I join on the main road and the main walking path I will put on a mask then because its a small path and keeping 2 metres apart from passerbys will be hard.

Probably doesn't help that I have a small face so find most masks brush the bottom of my eyelashes if I look down. If barely covering the tip of the nose or worn under the nose there would be no vision problem.

Before Christmas I kept on losing sight of my 5yo on the school run when she was close to me (masks required).

Surgeons often use special prism glasses to reduce neck problems from constantly looking down.

Kazzyhoward · 23/01/2021 12:58

Sometimes. I've started wearing one when it's busy on my daily walk (canal towpath). It's very narrow and groups of people make no attempt to social distance, some don't even try to go into single file, so you're rubbing shoulders with them. There are also a lot of joggers/cyclists who make no attempt to social distance either, some of which are breathing heavily (again whilst rubbing shoulders) and a few have even spat on the ground as they pass.

MajesticWhine · 23/01/2021 12:58

No I don't do this. And I wouldn't do unless it was mandatory or scientifically proven to be of benefit. Prefer some fresh air on my face on the few occasions that I can go outside.

Pinkblueberry · 23/01/2021 12:59

Only because it’s cold! I’ve quite enjoyed wearing a mask in the winter to keep my nose warm. Unless you’re in a crowded area it shouldn’t make a great difference to safety when you’re outside.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/01/2021 13:01

@randomsabreuse

Really sounds like your mask is wrong. You need a metal nose clip that keeps the fabric tight to the nose. The shaped ones drop down and opposed to the surgerical shaped ones that go straight across.

tappitytaptap · 23/01/2021 13:02

Nope, it’s bad enough wearing them in supermarkets etc! I’ll take the minimal chance and not wear one outside thanks.

BohemianDream · 23/01/2021 13:02

No, but I'm not mental. Yet.

Akire · 23/01/2021 13:03

I have been doing from the start. I live very near shopping area and so likely have people walking past you constantly or running past on the park. It’s far less stressful than stopping to put a mask on every 30 seconds when someone walks past you.

I know it’s outdoors and somehow this supposed to make uncatchable but a badly timed cough as they walk by half a metre away and wind in the right direction and full germs in your face.

Pinkblueberry · 23/01/2021 13:04

Yes have done. It reminds others to social distance and gives a degree of protection if they dont.

I’ve found the complete opposite - social distance seems to have gone out the window where I live since masks became common place - I think it’s made people very complacent. My DH had a bit of run in with someone who stood very close to him in a shop recently - he asked him to please keep his distance to which he replied ‘but I’ve got a mask on’...

bloodywhitecat · 23/01/2021 13:05

No but I live in the arse end of nowhere and am more likely to encounter a rampant unicorn than other walkers.

Russellbrandshair · 23/01/2021 13:06

No of course not.

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 13:06

DenisetheMenace - nope we always move to single file if people are walking the opposite but I think most people did before Covid.

In my experience, it’s people wearing masks who tend to dramatically jump out of the way.

GambasPil · 23/01/2021 13:07

No, I don’t wear one outdoors unless I’m going in and out of several shops that are a short distance from one another (which is, for obvious reasons, quite a rarity). Then I keep it on just because it’s a faff to keep taking on and off.

Russellbrandshair · 23/01/2021 13:07

Although I’ve found that they’re good if you’ve just got out of bed and can’t arsed to do your makeup etc!

RoseMartha · 23/01/2021 13:09

Not for a walk
When shops were open that were not in a shopping centre I would leave it on in between going to the ones I needed to.

MoirasRoses · 23/01/2021 13:11

No thanks. I keep mine on between shops (when they are open) or pop it below my nose for some fresh air but deffo not out walking. Cases are not being spread outside, it’s indoor mixing in workplaces, schools & bubbles that’s causing transmission.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/01/2021 13:12

In my experience, it’s people wearing masks who tend to dramatically jump out of the way.

Maybe that's because they are more likely to be critically vulnerable HmmConfused

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 13:14

Hazelnutlatteplease - then why does it need to be a dramatic waving hands around and jumping into the road just because they are vulnerable? I’m asthmatic and pregnant, don’t wear a mask outside and don’t jump into the road to avoid passing people.

Wearing a mask also does not mean zero risk. And I thought they protect others and not you or something?

Brunt0n · 23/01/2021 13:14

No and I saw someone at the playground this week wearing one and thought that was pretty sad, that it’s come to this

movingonup20 · 23/01/2021 13:15

No but we are in a lower infection area, well compared to most of the country at least (high compared to summer here when it was under 30 per 10k)

Akire · 23/01/2021 13:16

If you live in a built up area and 1 in 20 people that pass you could have covid I’d rather not take the risk.

If you can catch in a supermarket where everyone is wearing a mask, why is it unbelievable that you can get when someone passes you outdoors. Or indeed stands behind you in Tesco queue for 20min

Akire · 23/01/2021 13:17

*outside Tesco queue

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 13:17

People who want to wear masks outdoors - wear a mask.
People who don’t, don’t.

You do you.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 23/01/2021 13:18

Was walking about 30ft behind a woman last week, she turned, saw me and put her mask on and then turned again ( I hadn’t got any closer) and decided to take further action by putting her hood up.
I concluded she’s either a fugitive and thinks I’m hunting for her or (less crazy) she thinks my breath will travel some distance in front of me and subsequently end up in front of her.

HereComesATractor · 23/01/2021 13:19

No, I live rurally and it would be pointless, also it is harder to communicate with small children with something covering my face so as I usually have them with me I wouldn’t bother. If I were walking alone and very cold I might pull my neck gaiter up over nose and mouth, but I wouldn’t use a mask
