Do you think shutting down more would help?

I hear people all the time saying they need to shut things down more.
I. E construction, take away places etc

Would this actually work, would the government consider it do you think.

I'm on the fence really as things like construction is mainly outdoors but with certain aspects probably hard to distance etc.
I went past a large development the other day and saw just 3 wearing masks. But again may be because it's outdoors?

I can't say about take aways for example Costa because I don't use them anyway.
But I do use take away food delivery on a weekend sometimes.

I think more importantly is getting employers to comply properly with the existing rules. There are loads of employers who are not supporting people to work from home, even though jobs can be done from home.

DeathMetalMum · 22/01/2021 22:59

New cases have dropped fairly quickly in the past three weeks. I think the current 7 day average is just over 38,000. Yes patients in hospital are still high but it will take a few weeks after the number of cases fall for those to also fall. We need to wait a little longer to see how effective these restrictions are before changing them again.

My DH works on a construction site and he works on plots alone all day. Early on the site managers tried it on a bit by trying to multiple people on one plot but were told fairly swiftly to do one by all concerned.

No, we need taxes paid to fund the NHS.

EatingAllTheCookies · 22/01/2021 23:27

@Imiss2019 I'm glad your dh and his workmates stood their ground

Yes a friend of mines employer has said even if they tested positive they're to go in or be jobless but can work slightly away from others.! One lad went in and was positive and the others all found out after over a week he juts had twmo and loss of taste not visibly ill, The poor lad was so scared to lose his job and apprenticeship he went in.
Its not a job can be done from home and the poor lad has strict parents and expect rent etc on time so he wa scared to lose wage

B&M home stores could close....the facebook groups are now going wild over easter decor in there!!! they will all be out en masse

same with the range and home bargains

essentials doesn't mean essentials really at all

Allaboutthatbass · 22/01/2021 23:30

@EatingAllTheCookies that is awful! Employers like that deserve huge fines.

Throwaway99 · 22/01/2021 23:34

I don't think closing B & M and The Range will make much difference. Plus B & M sell Ruffles chocolate bars and where else could I buy them?

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/01/2021 23:34

Not unless the number of cases stop dropping or slow down to much.

We are doing well so far and the vaccinations are speeding up. By the time the priority groups are all vaccinated in March we should be looking good. Nice low case numbers, low hospitalisation and deaths.

i work in retail....it would certainly help. in fact they should be closed before takeaways

they are rubbish at enforcing any SD in those stores here. its a free for all

I think we should've locked down more harshly after Christmas, I know it's not a fix all but a shorter, harsher lockdown might've slowed it quite a bit

Throwaway99 · 22/01/2021 23:37

It would make no difference at all shutting B & M.

XenoBitch · 22/01/2021 23:38

New cases are dropping so introducing new measures makes no sense.

Why all the hate for places like B&M, The Range etc? I am low income (UC) and rely on them for tinned goods, cleaning stuff, pet food etc.

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:40

no hate for them.....but the queues and the way they are heavily promoted on social media means they are constantly full

so thats a constant stream of customers in those small cramped aisles. how is that fair on staff?

I admit, I have not seen it overcrowded or anything in my local B&M.. and The Range is huge so no problems there either.

Trouble is, if shops such as these are closed, it will mean more traffic for the supermarkets.

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:43

yes, true

I had to go this week as the only place I could a broom ( I know Wilko but I hated scanning my stuff at a staff till last time) and pink stuff. Homeschooling has taken its toll on my house.
middleager · 22/01/2021 23:48

I saw pictures of a crowded airport and just wondered what's the point in trying to shut more down when crowds look shoulder to shoulder at airports daily.

Daisysflowers · 22/01/2021 23:50

No! The economy is already a mess without shutting more down. We need things to open so things can be funded like the NHS.
