Do you think shutting down more would help?

I hear people all the time saying they need to shut things down more.
I. E construction, take away places etc

Would this actually work, would the government consider it do you think.

I'm on the fence really as things like construction is mainly outdoors but with certain aspects probably hard to distance etc.
I went past a large development the other day and saw just 3 wearing masks. But again may be because it's outdoors?

I can't say about take aways for example Costa because I don't use them anyway.
But I do use take away food delivery on a weekend sometimes.

Please don’t shut down construction. We’ve got a building site near us, all day long there are parents with small children walking past and stopping to watch the diggers and dumper trucks working. Take that away, it’s going to be a really long few months! (Obviously I’m joking, but the diggers are the highlight of our day and make a boring walk slightly more interesting).

LegoAndLolDolls · 22/01/2021 23:53

I know lots of people are physically in work so maybe some employers could do more if they have allowed home working in the first lockdown.

Personally I'm not sure there is much left to shut apart that. If covid is benefitting massively from B&M, home bargains and takeaways then logically we are screwed. Tesco, Sains and waitrose must turn over so much more than HB, take out and B&M surely?

user1487194234 · 22/01/2021 23:56

Definitely not
We have enough restrictions in my opinion
Any further restrictions are unlikely to make any measurable difference
Restrictions on liberty need to me absolutely justified

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 23:57

turnover will have to slow down if they are limiting people in store though

our sainsbury's is one person per family and we are back to long queues. the store is quite empty due to this

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 23/01/2021 00:04

GirlCrush

Yep I heard them

They said a lot of don't knows about the new variant. That is because several bits of research are in. All those different studies have said something different. One even suggested the new variant was weaker. Anyway all that show more dangerous only make it a statistical slight difference.

At the same time they are say hospitals are 78% more busy that first peak. So my first thought was that explains the extra deaths. Not oh my God panic.

If hospitals are over stretched. Staff are over stretched. More deaths happen
Hence the whole save the NHS thing we are doing. Tonight WHO has basically confirmed and are saying the same.

Israel has also released more data about the vaccine today and it is looking very good.

We already know the vaccine reduces serious illness and hospitalisation greatly. The affect of the vaccine will show in a month on our hospitals admissions.

Today there was a lovely story about a care home in Devon and how they think the vaccination has already saved people.

We are looking pretty good to be vaccinating 500k a day soon.

Everything going in the right direction if you ask meGrin

GirlCrush · 23/01/2021 00:07

yep, all going in the right direction on paper. a glimmer of hope

until i come on mumsnet and read opposing opinions

actually,,i thought the high death rates were still down to christmas mixing.

It seems like ppl are walking into The Range & seeing it crowded. Can't the loudest critics of the Range being open go to a more expensive store selling same types of basics? Then you'll reduce the crowded problems.

Throwaway99 · 23/01/2021 00:13

Ain't no one shouting for Waitrose or M & S to close.

My local Range has socially distanced queue out side. Limited numbers in side and definitely less people there than the local supermarket.

I think people look at social media and think all store are the same.

MrsFezziwig · 23/01/2021 00:23

no hate for them.....but the queues and the way they are heavily promoted on social media means they are constantly full

If you still feel the need to do your shopping at 11 o’clock on a Saturday morning this may well be true, but I go (regularly) in an evening and there has never been more than a handful of shoppers in B & M (different branches as well).

Same applies to most supermarkets. I queued once at the beginning of the first lockdown and decided I didn’t fancy doing it again, so I go in the evening. People need to think outside the box a bit.

SophieGiroux · 23/01/2021 00:24

This is what we need to get rid of! This is Heathrow today. All the things we are sacrificing seem pointless when this is going on and you can bet that most people don't bother with quarantine when they arrive.

Thegereldine3000 · 23/01/2021 00:32

Being in lock down 3 clearly shows they don't work. If shutting things down was the solution, this would have ended after the first lockdown.

PoppiesinOctober · 23/01/2021 00:49

No.

What mumsnet has against B&M and The Range, i'll never know. Closing them won't make one iota of difference.

MN seem to think that B & M and The Range are responsible for the whole pandemic.
PoppiesinOctober · 23/01/2021 00:53

MN seem to think that B & M and The Range are responsible for the whole pandemic.

Ain't that the truth.

I've been to both this month. Didn't have to queue outside, very safe and spaced out inside, and most definitely wasn't packed out. It felt safer than any supermarket to me.

Throwaway99 · 23/01/2021 01:03

Perhaps the answer to all of it is to shut all shops except for Waitrose and it will all be over?

LilyPond2 · 23/01/2021 01:08

I think there should be much more focus on making sure employers do everything reasonably possible to make their workplaces as safe as possible. I think this issue is getting far too little attention, with the BBC more focused on reports about individuals who have been fined for travelling too far from home.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/01/2021 01:44

It probably would help. I work in non essential manufacturing and we've had multiple cases of Covid.

But I don't think it will be done, we can't afford to shut more places and put thousands more on furlough.

Peppafrig · 23/01/2021 02:57

I work in construction and it’s impossible to socially distance on the sites I’m on not all construction happens outside. Plus we all travel to sites in work vans 4 to a van. I’ve had to isolate a few times but luckily not caught it so far . If they aren’t going to close it then they should limit it so you can’t go work in a low prevalence area if you live in high prevalence area. For instance we have workers crossing the border from London to work on sites in Scotland then we wonder how the new variant got here .

ChocOrange1 · 23/01/2021 05:01

@PregnantGotCovid

I think more importantly is getting employers to comply properly with the existing rules. There are loads of employers who are not supporting people to work from home, even though jobs can be done from home.
Yes I agree with this. The government need to act on workplaces where 20+ people are being forced to work together in close quarters, probably travelling on public transport to get there, because employers think they're less effective working from home. This will be a much bigger driver of infection than a takeaway where it's easy to social distance and limit numbers, or construction workers outside, or individuals going for a walk.
Redrivershore · 23/01/2021 06:19

Our large Waitrose sells all sorts of nice household stuff, I was browsing the toasters the other day, it must be just B&M and the Range that people moan about on here.

PrincessNutNuts · 23/01/2021 06:49

The building renovation happening near me is half a dozen blokes all working indoors.

And yes, of course tighter restrictions would reduce infection levels faster..

We still have people ambling around the shops for something fun to do.

And employers forcing their workforce to work in unsafe conditions.

There are many more people at work and school than there were in March.

Tier 4 during school holidays was arguably more effective than current restrictions.

If we want faster results with a chance of preventing the 60,000 covid deaths by May we should go harder.

lightand · 23/01/2021 07:33

No.

I think the tide is turning in peoples' thinking. Much like the school lockdowns. Many people originally did not send their child to school, but with this lockdown many many more are wanting their child in school.
Mental health is suffering. Country finances cant keep coping with shutdowns. NHS needs to function, both in having the country pay taxes, and probably having more ICU staff etc.
People are realising that covid is here to stay, at least for the forseeable future, and the UK needs to adapt accordingly. Sooner rather than later.

Notanotherteenmovie1 · 23/01/2021 08:28

For god's sake, not this again. B and M etc. Sell food, medicine, toiletries, household products etc.

If you close all these so-called 'non essential' places then everybody will just cram into the supermarkets.
It's spreading largely in hospitals and care homes, not because somebody went out to buy some paint.

Sick of these people whining, they won't be happy until every last bit of fun or enjoyment is sucked out of our lives and we are all glued into our homes with bread and gruel rations sent once a fortnight.
