If the new variant is more deadly

I really dont think they'll open before summer

The government need to get a plan if action now

I dont think shops etc will open up either, we need much more people vaccinated twice to see if the vaccines help us

Shit.

I can't stand this over-thinking and panicking. Give us a break! What's the point of worrying into a frenzy when no-one knows. Take each week at a time. I can't stand the drama ffs!

Itisasecret · 22/01/2021 20:04

@CertieCumboyle

FWIW, my daughter's school emailed today to say they are expecting to return after Feb half term (England, independent school).

They are obviously planning for all eventualities, but a Feb return isn't off the cards yet (thank God).

That doesn’t mean anything. That’s the official guidance, I don’t know of any school telling parents they expect to be closed until Easter. Most have only planned to half term for closures.

They will find out with everyone else.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 20:04

I think if they told us now that we would be in lockdown until the Autumn, I’d feel beyond anxious and depressed.

They could never do that because they simply don't know.

That's what I think a lot of people find hard to swallow - they want some level of certainty but that isn't possible in a pandemic.

peak2021 · 22/01/2021 20:04

I think they will go back in some form. Perhaps not all year groups, but I think some will.

Backbee · 22/01/2021 20:05

Nah it'll reach a point where it is fucking ridiculous to have them still closed, and quite frankly an absolute travesty to children.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 20:06

That's why I personally don't think think should do lockdowns by timeframes but by hospitalisation numbers. When hospital cases are at X number for over a week, you release restrictions (while keeping others in place which will need to be there til everyone is vaccinated).

TwelvePaws · 22/01/2021 20:06

im thinking (hoping!) its the 1.3-1.4%?

Yes, this is correct.

13/14 would be frightening. That would be almost 93%. 😬

DonnaDonna01 · 22/01/2021 20:07

I know it is my own fault for reading these threads but it’s the exact same thing over and over. How long will x last, the posters at one end saying months/years and the others saying weeks. Then the arguing and abuse starts. I’m beginning to wonder if we deserve to be let back out the way people behave on here. No one really knows, no one needs to argue - it’s individual interpretation and speculation.

tatutata · 22/01/2021 20:08

Learn some grammar.

BungleandGeorge · 22/01/2021 20:08

Call me a cynic but I presumed the mutation was a convenient thing to blame our awful mortality rate on. Rather than blaming it on suboptimal control of the virus and insufficient healthcare services.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 20:08

sorry if this has already been clarified
if 1000 60 year old men got covid ten of those would likely die (1%)
new varient means 13 or 14 out of 1000 (so 1.3-1.4%) or 13 out of 14??

It's the same. 1.3-1.4% of 1000 men is 13-14 men.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 20:09

Oh sorry I misread your post completely!

Fizbosshoes · 22/01/2021 20:10

Thank you! I should have read the thread more thoroughly. I thought sounded unreasonable but it was slightly ambiguous from the original post.
loulouljh · 22/01/2021 20:11

Is it more deadly?? I really doubt it. More scaremongering rubbish..

TwelvePaws · 22/01/2021 20:11

🤣🤣🤣

Fizbosshoes · 22/01/2021 20:17

@Livelovebehappy

And I would rather they review month by month. I find it easier to cope if they say lockdown will be reviewed in a month, rather than them say we will be in lockdown until September for example. I think if they told us now that we would be in lockdown until the Autumn, I’d feel beyond anxious and depressed.
I think they will do this. In the first lock down they reviewed every 3 weeks, I think. I'm just working towards half term at the moment with the view it will likely be Easter (as far as my kids are concerned, we're working towards half term as I know they will feel despondent if they think its longer) And if its beyond easter then we'll deal with that when we have more info. Its impossible to say what the scenario will be at any given point in time more than a few weeks ahead. We can't say "we definitely wont be back until September" as its not yet known although they haven't ruled it out. My DD is year 10 and concerned about some of the more practical subjects such as Art. If they aren't back until September, I would hope they would take that into consideration for GCSEs next year but I don't expect them to make a decision on that any time soon.
FrippEnos · 22/01/2021 20:18

@frozendaisy

What is sort of clear is schools are a priority this time. But we shall see.

hahaha comedy gold.

MargosKaftan · 22/01/2021 20:19

Right - on another thread on here the numbers have been discussed, the situation now is 1 in 10 adults have been vaccinated. 1 in 10 and we've only been at it for just over a month and that included Christmas. That's such good news.

End of Feb, its reasonable to think that close to 20% of adults will have been vaccinated. By Easter, between 30 and 40% of all adults, and there's growing evidence that having recovered from covid gives immunity. Realistically, over half of all adults will have either had the vaccination or have immunity having already had it, in areas with high infection rates now will be closer to that herd immunity levels. The numbers in hospital will be very different.

Warmer weather improves the situation further.

And the cynic in me suggests they will not want us all in tight lockdown and home schooling if they can avoid it at all for the local elections planned in May.

There are a lot of doom mongers on here. Focus on the positives.

Staffy1 · 22/01/2021 20:20

*but now we are hearing the vaccine may not work on the variant we are now experiencing.....will need to be 'tweaked' as apparently this variant is more deadly

so everyone trots out for a new vaccine once its developed*

@GirlCrush, i thought they still gave some protection, as in made what would have been a serious illness into a milder one, or is this opinion out of date now?

Staffy1 · 22/01/2021 20:21

These asterisks to bolden a quote are quite temperamental, aren't they?

DfEisashambles · 22/01/2021 20:21

I’ve learned a lot by it being discussed. A lot of questions repeated and opinions as to when xyz will happen yes, but as we can see, things change quickly.

If I didn’t want to read about something I’d skip it.

LynetteScavo · 22/01/2021 20:22

@MargosKaftan the vaccination roll out has been fantastic, but two doses are needed. We'll get there, and it won't be too long.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 20:23

These asterisks to bolden a quote are quite temperamental, aren't they?

I don't think they work if what you're trying to put in bold has separate paragraphs with spaces in between - you have to "bold" each paragraph separately.

Livelovebehappy · 22/01/2021 20:24

donnadonna01. That’s funny, but scarey too, that you think they would keep us locked up at home if we step out of line! The world is going crazy.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/01/2021 20:24

My money is on Easter. What I'd like is week on week off next term with half classes. Primary teacher.
