If the new variant is more deadly

I really dont think they'll open before summer

The government need to get a plan if action now

I dont think shops etc will open up either, we need much more people vaccinated twice to see if the vaccines help us

Shit.

Mass testing was ceased probably because it's not accurate enough

blue25 · 22/01/2021 18:11

I agree. Unfortunately I don’t think schools will be fully open until September.

Lostinwinter · 22/01/2021 18:12

I don't think anyone knows how the virus is going to behave, & how quickly the lockdown will reduce transmission.

KatherineJaneway · 22/01/2021 18:12

I agree.

IncidentsandAccidents · 22/01/2021 18:12

I feel optimistic that they will open after Easter.

MrsBennettsSecretSon · 22/01/2021 18:12

The idea is unbearable though Sad

OliveTree75 · 22/01/2021 18:13
@ChimaeraEgg you are rude and condescending. People are worried and at home, homeschooling whilst trying to work. So obviously it’s not welcome news. You seem unbalanced yourself, awfully invested in calling everyone panicking idiots and perhaps need to step back from these threads so it can be calmly discussed.
I think saying "off you trot..." is ruder tbf.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 18:14

Funny....I got called a "doom monger" for predicting the first lockdown. I got called a doom monger for saying it would last longer than a few weeks. I got called a doom monger for predicting there would be a worse peak in the winter

Well yes, Whitty also gets called a doom monger.

It is more people who post things like schools will definitely be shut until the summer stating their opinions as fact that I would call doom mongering.

DfEisashambles · 22/01/2021 18:14

As they’ve just said - If 1000 60 year old men got covid, ten of those would likely die. With the new variant it would be 13/14 so that has complicated matters a bit. If it’s true the vaccines work on the new variants there’s still a lot of hope.

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 18:15

Firstly, I do realise that as I am at home myself, in a 500sq ft flat with no garden, working whilst trying to home school a 5 year old.

Secondly, I didn't call anyone an idiot. Do you not agree that people take things out of context because they haven't read what was actually said?

Staffy1 · 22/01/2021 18:15

The best solution is stepping up the vaccinations, get more places doing them, round the clock, provided the supply exists. Also sticking to the 3 week gap that was meant to happen between jabs, so that they actually work as well as possible. The vaccination program should be an absolute priority.

Spiratedaway · 22/01/2021 18:17

Jesus no one knows .... something needs to be done to protect lives and also major mental health

DfEisashambles · 22/01/2021 18:17

@ChimaeraEgg

“Yes of course it is better. Sadly if this whole shit show proves anything it is that a good 90% of the population have no critical thinking skills, no comprehension skills and no concept of nuance.”

‘Off you trot’ directed at someone who comes on expressly to berate people for fear mongering when they’re calmly discussing schools in relation to the announcement is not ruder than your deluded opinions on how stupid everyone is.

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 18:17

@Toomanyparsnips

Will you give it a rest. You've got no idea. Bloody doom mongers on her, honestly. Yes it's serious at the moment but why oh why are so many people intent on whipping up a frenzy of despair and panic at every opportunity.
bit of an over reaction? most sensible people realise 2021 is pretty much heading the same way as 2020

schools going back AFTER Easter is surely good news, not 'doom mongering' at all! where is this 'frenzy of despair"?

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 18:19

It wasn't me who said it was.

Freddiefox · 22/01/2021 18:19

@ssd

I also read the new south African variant might not respond to the vaccine. Schools arent going back...
Schools will go back, they can’t stay closed forever. But we can do it differently, we can have half a class, face masks, visors, boxes, outside classes. We need to be creative, and recognise that our children might be a bit uncomfortable. I’d rather my children received an education with a face mask and visor for a few hours a week than the home schooling I can offer.
GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 18:20

but now we are hearing the vaccine may not work on the variant we are now experiencing.....will need to be 'tweaked' as apparently this variant is more deadly

so everyone trots out for a new vaccine once its developed?

Elephant4 · 22/01/2021 18:20

From a personal point of view I think I could just about cope with the dc home learning for the rest of the school year (although id obviously rather not) as long as they aren't still confined to the house like they are now. They need to be able to interact with their peers and and maintain relationships outside the home.

@3littlewords I feel the same.

My kids are learning the same or better at home. Their schools are not great tbf.

But they're missing their friends so much and I'm worried for them.

NothingIsWrong · 22/01/2021 18:21

There are going to be a lot of very broken parents and children if the schools do not go back until September. I already know several people barely coping

ChimaeraEgg · 22/01/2021 18:21

I'm certainly not going to berate anyone for being rude because they express an opinion I don't like. I'd be calling people on here rude all day every day if that were the case!

GirlCrush · 22/01/2021 18:21

anyway, schools aren't closed.....plenty are going in as it is, the rest are being home schooled

its better than nothing

MynephewR · 22/01/2021 18:21

I think they will be back sometime in the next half term, Easter at the latest.

Also this Everything gets taken out of context and whipped into a frenzy by people who haven't actually bothered to read or digest information properly
Why would the new variant having a slightly higher mortality rate mean that the schools and shops won't open until summer? Cases are decreasing, warmer weather, vaccine roll out going well, the fact that pandemics have waves and we are coming out of the latest one are all reasons that restrictions will start to be lifted in the spring.

DfEisashambles · 22/01/2021 18:21

@ChimaeraEgg apologies if it wasn’t you that said that.

SpencerGregson · 22/01/2021 18:23

Actually, for once I thought Boris Johnson gave a sensible response when he said the plan was still to review on 15 Feb. That absolutely makes sense and there's no point in second guessing until then.

Bloody hope schools do open before Easter, though! I like the point upthread about lobbying MPs. I really hope gov gets rid of its resistance to rotas and lets children in part time in small groups. It would make such a difference to be able
to tell them that they can see friends even just one day a fortnight (but hopefully more!). With smaller groups, it might be possible to teach more in a shorter time too.

Although I could see this being logistically difficult in my younger DC's school due to the number of children already in.

CountessFrog · 22/01/2021 18:23

A request please.

If you are going to post doom mongering shite, please use the correct words.

You must use ‘I’m afraid’ and ‘nope’ and ‘unfortunately.’

And please refer to your friend who is a hospital
Cleaner and swears blind that ITU is full of children.

I just can’t take you all seriously. At least using the right terminology reminds me of your superior knowledge and foresight. It’s amazing that you haven’t been consulted by SAGE yet. Why is that, exactly?
