To think that we need to Reopen Gyms

Coconut1978 · 22/01/2021 13:04

With the weather this time of year it’s so horrible to exercise outside and the parks are packed making it difficult to run.

It’s really hurting my mental and physical health not being able to adequately exercise.

I’m at a low risk of covid if I was infected and have already had the virus and recovered.

We know that obese nations like the US, UK and Mexico have done worse with the virus than nations like Japan and the Netherlands who are healthier.

I think as long as numbers are managed you should be able to book to use the gym and social distance and clean in there.

There are so few cases linked to gyms and they are a really low infection risk but are so beneficial to many of our mental and physical health.

Aibu to think gyms should be included in our daily exercise given our climate and poor health.

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 23/01/2021 10:08

They should open the open air pools and tennis courts before gyms.
Our outdoor gym equipment is taped off Hmm. That's overkill.

MrsPernicious · 23/01/2021 10:36

I couldn't be arsed to move the coffee table and cat scratching post, roll back the rug and move the sofa for it but I need to have a look and see what else is out there

Some people would call this activity a warm up exercise. Mind set is every thing when it comes to keeping fit under less than optimal conditions.

MiddlesexGirl · 23/01/2021 10:39

Unfortunately most gyms have absolutely crap ventilation so are breeding grounds for coronavirus. Except of course the ones that took over all the sports halls in earlier tier measures, thus preventing access by the regular users Hmm

ThePricklySheep · 23/01/2021 11:14

Pink Why do you need to move the rug? I just do it on ours. It moves a bit but nothing bad happens.
Or have you a strip of space at the end/down the side of your bed? You just need enough for a burpee/lunge. It really is just a meter by two that you need.

Remaker · 23/01/2021 11:28

Gyms are safe? Where did this idea come from? In Sydney which has had very few outbreaks, one of the significant ones was named after the gym where the outbreak started. Gyms were some of the last businesses to reopen after our lockdown. Outdoor exercise is far safer. Covid is an aerosol borne virus, people huffing and puffing in an enclosed space has to be one of the worst environments, surely?

Sorry OP I think this is a case of people elevating their desires to the status of needs. You don’t need a huge space to exercise at home.

Desmondo2016 · 23/01/2021 11:31

@EmmanuelleMakro

Definitely agree. Near me is an open air (heated) pool that had tip shut -totally barmy. The gvt and lockdown fanatics on here are presumably couch potatoes who are glad of the excuse to settle for a Netflix life with complete contempt the mental (and physical) health of those who are more responsible about staying healthy.
That's utter tosh. I personally think the opposite is true! You're obviously not serious enough about keeping fit to be innovative in your approach to it and are not educated enough about about how to keep fit and strong to understand that there's more to working out than donning your lycra and chucking some lumps of metal around in the gym. Happy to send you some ideas if you're struggling 👍

The cult of ‘training’, unless you actually are an athlete, is a modern fad. It is definitely not a necessity to be prioritised in tough times
Oh god yeah, these people who think they're 'athletes'... who do they think they are with their 'training'
a brisk walk was good enough for my grandparents and it should be good enough for everyone!!!

RJnomore1 · 23/01/2021 11:49

Mind set IS everything.

I totally acknowledge that after my three jobs work on my doctorate and looking after the house/family I am not of a mindset to exercise at home as well. I am knocking yesrs off my life as a result.

But telling me I can and should is not going to make a difference. I’m not mentally weak. I’m carrying a massive load- I’m just acknowledging my own self is not motivated at home.

Re safety this seems positive although admittedly with an agenda

Not sure if you’re joking or not. But resistance work is proven to be hugely beneficial for bone health and helps reduce osteoporosis. The is particularly important for women.

Plus lifestyles are generally more sedentary day to day. Housework is less labour intensive. Lots of people work in an office so sit down all day. For many of our grandparents they would have had no option but to walk to school.

So I think well done to those who purposely try and make their lives as active as possible because without them the obesity problem in this country would be even worse.

MsMartini · 23/01/2021 12:59

@Desmondo2016 I agree - I see properly fit, strong and athletic people training hard all around when I go out. They are being inventive, using bodyweight, bands, benches, railings, running, boxing, doing HIIT...loads of stuff. All that is easier if you are reasonably experienced because you know how to make adaptations. But there are plenty of options. I've just done a 12k through quiet streets and bit of parks and a 15 minutes abs on a rug at home. Yesterday, I walked and did a chest and triceps workout in a local park using a football boot scraper thing that has a solid bar across the top for dips, a low railing for push ups, and a post and band for chest press. Tomorrow I will walk and do a class in my living room that uses just a resistance band and little space. It is possible.Yes, for some people it is harder to motivate yourself without a gym routine, and for many people that's energy they just don't have right now. But if you do, and you can afford gym membership in terms of time and money, you can find ways to exercise now, I think, if you want to.

Sexnotgender · 23/01/2021 13:13

Took my toddler out this morning for yet another walk.

Weirdly there were loads of really fit looking people in the park. Seems it is possible without a gym... who knew. Guess they got bored of watching Netflix and decided to make the best of it.

Frenchdressing · 23/01/2021 14:25

Joe Wicks has a ‘hotel friendly’ workout that is good if you live in a flat. No jumping on what is someone’s ceiling etc.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/01/2021 14:34

@Frenchdressing I'll have a look at that one (with the sound down as he's so annoying!). I live in a ground floor flat but I still worry about the noise as we've got laminate flooring. No jumping would be better for my various ailments!

@ThePricklySheep I have to take the rug up as it slips all over the place and I've nearly ended up doing the splits.

alltheadrenalin · 23/01/2021 16:31

Some right sanctimonious people on here. Not everyone wants to adapt to home workouts. I like lifting heavy weights and power lifting. this is something that's not replicable at home.

Desmondo2016 · 23/01/2021 18:05

It is for me because I have heavy weights at home. In my gym Smile. But you're being very narrow minded and short sighted if you think a) gyms should reopen so you can carry on exercising as you wish and b) gyms are the only place you can achieve the results you want to.

Gyms simply should not reopen just because it's some people's first choice way to work out!

Well tough. I’m getting a bit sick of the fitness industry and their whinging about gym closures. I’ve had to unfollow a few accounts on Instagram due to the endless complaining and conspiracy theories that they keep spouting.

It’s perfectly possibly to buy some heavy weights. My DB lifts some at home and he’s never set foot in a gym.

I’ve had to unfollow

MrsPernicious · 23/01/2021 18:21

alltheadrenalin that mind set is so bad for your mental health. Have you considered practicing radical acceptance?

LAlady · 23/01/2021 18:28

I love the gym, go 6 days out of 7. Do classes and was back when they opened.

I've continued to work out everyday through all lock downs with Les Mills On Demand - after body pump this morning, I walked 8.5 miles (something I try and do a couple of times a week).

If you want to work out, you can. I'd love gyms to reopen but now isn't the time. I also work in a school, still go in everyday, but school opening to all pupils has to be the first priority.

DailyCandy · 23/01/2021 18:29

Daft suggestion.

Emmie2021 · 23/01/2021 18:30

Yep

Anyone would think the Gov wants us to all become obese inactive sheep

MrsPernicious · 23/01/2021 18:42

Thanks @Emmie2021 , you have reminded me why I prefer canicross to the gym Grin

If you want to get fit, just do it.

alltheadrenalin · 23/01/2021 19:39

^^ no it sounds bloody I awful 😂 you can't replicate power lifting equipment in a terrace sadly. Heavy dumbells aren't an equivalent. Felt safer in a sanitised spaced out gym then I ever have in a supermarket

alltheadrenalin · 23/01/2021 20:23

Please google powerlifting, I can't fit a bench, squat rack and Olympic size bars in my house.

Only a tiny percentage of the population has gym memberships. It is entirely possible to stay fit without a gym, especially if you use the money saved on membership to get yourself a few weights and some resistance bands, you'll have plenty to do for those who aren't practising competitively.

Yes, for powerlifters it isn't the same but at a time when entire industries have been shut down and children not allowed at school - and, for that matter, professional athletes losing their one shot at championships that are closed and young athletes in this country losing over a year of training Vs those in other countries that have lower rates and non-elite training open - I can't bring myself to shed a tear at @alltheadrenalin not being able to fit Olympic size bars in the house.
