Sarah Jarvis on Jeremy Vine

Hi,

Is it just me or has her once very clear, informative, balanced way of delivering medical advice/info, tipped over into an absolute doom and gloom fest?

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of gloom right now. I'm not denying that, but for goodness sake, stop telling us that we need to just accept these strict measures indefinitely!

This morning she almost gleefully declared "let me shower on your parade Jeremy" with an actual smile, when he said that surely once we've hit the vaccine roll out target, we can start to look forward and look at easing restrictions. I'm sorry guys, but no. Suck it up.

Erm no. I do believe in lockdowns. I am very much in support of restrictions when needed and they are needed, but you can't throw away comments like this. Some people - many people - will be hanging on every word of these professionals and we need to see some light. For example, yes, if x, y and z happens, then we should be looking at easing a, b and c.

Yes, it's all unprecedented. Yes, we don't have a crystal ball, but this approach is irresponsible and actually, quite dangerous.

Anyone agree?

Yes, I agree.

Spiratedaway · 22/01/2021 10:19

She gets on my norks !!! All these people spouting all this are still getting their monthly pay and pensions

PumpkinsMum18 · 22/01/2021 10:21

I think she is just so bored of repeating herself over and over answering the same questions just rephrased as different debate topics! She cannot say what people want to hear, as if it turns out in the future she was wrong, she would have to back up her opinions that she didn’t believe in the first place!

Malbecky · 22/01/2021 10:26

@PumpkinsMum18, I agree. I don't want to be lied to and told "everything will be ok by x month, I promise". We all need the truth, but there is a way of delivering it that doesn't completely destroy your will to carry on!

OP posts:
Topseyt · 22/01/2021 10:29

I agree with you too.

Some people really do seem to enjoy having these restrictions though. It gives them the power to criticise and police others. Curtain twitchers for instance, they are having a marvellous time counting how many times their neighbours have left their houses.

PumpkinsMum18 · 22/01/2021 10:36

@Topseyt definitely!

I only started watching Jeremy vine around this time last year when I started mat leave. I’m beginning to wonder what they talked about before COVID?! Brexit I spose?

SquishySquirmy · 22/01/2021 10:40

I didn't hear this so can't comment on SJ, but I agree with your point in general.
I want them to be honest and realistic, and to treat us as grown ups when they deliver bad news.

But there's no need to revel in the drama quite so blatantly (not saying SJ did this, but the tone of many respected commentators has been a bit too excited, bordering on gleeful, at times).

Its insensitive and irresponsible.

Malbecky · 22/01/2021 11:17

@SquishySquirmy, yes, exactly.

It's not just the delivery that I disagree with though. Some, like SJ, seem to think that until the risk levels drop to zero, then we have to accept that we don't leave the house.

Surely this is about greatly reducing the risk, not eliminating altogether.

It's not just SJ, but her manner and her tone has increasingly got on my nerves.

It doesn't seem to matter what scenario is presented to her, it always seems to be answered by a big sigh, "sincere" head tilt and "I'm sorry.. but no", as though we will just accept that until Coronavirus disappears altogether, that we need to lock ourselves away.

Also, what great level of expertise does Sarah Jarvis have? She's not a virologist. She's just a GP.

StCharlotte · 22/01/2021 11:22

I wonder if she still believes masks are a waste of time. She was pretty adamant early on.

(I have no idea what to believe any more!)

Malbecky · 22/01/2021 11:23

Yes @IcedPurple, I was also thinking this. General Practitioner. Just a celeb one. She is no more qualified to advise on the subject than my own GP, as far as I know.

OP posts:
Malbecky · 22/01/2021 11:25

@StCharlotte, I remember that. She was "very concerned" by the use of masks in the beginning.

So pleased to this thread. Not a denier, not against lockdown. I do feel that while people are losing livelihoods, businesses & work they love, many medical people are enjoying raising their profile a little too much. As stated up thread they are still getting salary, pension etc intact Covid is 'busy season' foe them. Many are not specialists & their commentary is really annoying me.

Jellykat · 22/01/2021 20:21

God i can't stand her, she delivers info with such arrogance and if any listeners get some fact wrong she sounds so sneery..

MissyB1 · 22/01/2021 20:26

On the masks point, she wasn’t the only healthcare professional to have been very dubious about mask use. Medics work on evidence, and the evidence wasn’t there. My own Dh (very experienced hospital consultant) was equally dubious.

I don’t mind SJ, don’t have any strong feelings about her. It’s that bloody Dr Christian bloke I can’t bear.

dappledsunshine · 22/01/2021 20:26

I cannot abide her op. And Dr Hilary can do one too.

Oh my god yes! I can't even watch JV now because she's always on it. People are fragile and if 'experts' can't give hope they at least need to present a balanced view. She may help them to ignite a debate but media need to take some responsibility and ensure it's balanced.

RaggieDolls · 22/01/2021 22:12

Is this the same Sarah Jarvis who ridiculed Caprice in March last year when she said we needed to lockdown and wear masks. I think the main thrust of her argument is that lockdowns don't work.

What a turn around. I hope she's since apologised to Caprice but I doubt it.

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 22/01/2021 22:17

Never been able to stand her. Smug and self satisfied.
