Advice re self isolation - slightly complicated!

My husband is currently in hospital with Covid, he is on critical care but improving so that’s good. He only tested positive this morning on his 7th test, symptoms began on 11th January, 1st negative on the 12th. Saw GP on 18th who thought covid and said to isolate until 21st despite negative test, another negative test that evening. He was admitted to hospital on the 19th where he tested a further 5 times and treated for covid as that’s what they believed it was. Positive test finally came through this morning. Where do we stand re isolation?

Technically if you haven't had contact in the 2 days before a +ve test I don't think you need to isolate. If you're sure he did have it when you last saw him I would do 10 days from last contact as self isolation (as to test 7 times the Dr's must have been fairly sure he had it all along)

I am sure and doctors are too as he had everything but the positive test. We’ve both been together since the 11th when his symptoms started and not been out anywhere as I’m working at home.

Personally I'd isolate for 10+ days from today,

I figure I would if I tested positive, so if I could in that case, I can now🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm not sure exactly what should happen here but I agree with muddled and think it could be a good idea to isolate for 10 days from the last time you saw him. Especially if you're working from home and can isolate easily.

I can isolate and will if I definitely need to but my only concern is I’m 13 weeks pregnant and have my scan on Monday. I’m right at the end of the window for the tests for Downs Syndrome etc. so am worried about the delay. I don’t want to put anyone at risk either though!

Can you get hold of your midwife to ask for their opinion on your scan? I have a feeling mine was a little late but I can't remember. I just did a quick Google and NHS suggests that there are other options for more tests further along your pregnancy if you can't fit it in before 14 weeks - www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/screening-for-downs-edwards-pataus-syndrome/

I would follow your GP's initial advice to self isolate for 10 days from the start of his symptoms as this is the formal guidance for households. That means your SI ended yesterday. I hope your DH continues to improve.

Lifeispassingby · 22/01/2021 11:57

If his symptoms clearly started on 11th then 10days isolation takes you to 21st. It depends if you believe the symptoms started on the 11th or later. To be sure if you isolate until 29th when he went in to hospital then that is probably a safest. Could you afford the appointment to be put back a week?

His symptoms definitely started on the 11th, he’s felt exactly the same all the way through, we only knew he had deteriorated on Tuesday because of the pulse oximeter reading. The recommendation for the scan is up to 13 weeks 4 days and another week would take me over but I would pay for an NIPT test rather than put anyone at risk. It’s just quite confusing.

Yes, isolate 10 days from the onset of symptoms, so the 21st

Lifeispassingby · 22/01/2021 12:53

@PurpleFlower1983 based on what you’ve said I would say 10 days from the 11th so you are ok from now x

Thanks everyone. My husband has put the details into test and trace so I will see what comes back. He couldn’t put the 11th in, the earliest it would let him was the 13th so we will see what happens. There is conflicting advice online so I will wait for the official message.
