Lockdown until summer?

Arghhhhhhhhhh.....

I actually can’t take anymore. I’m barely holding on by a thread as it is and I’m really trying to not read the news but it’s everywhere.

I was expecting March/April but summer?!

@Puppylucky

British summer time starts in March which is what the PP was referring to
British summer time and they start of summer are two completely different things.
DumplingsAndStew · 21/01/2021 19:41

Oh for goodness sake. Of course he can't guarantee it, he's not psychic. That doesn't mean it's going to happen!

Beaniecats · 21/01/2021 19:42

@FreshFreesias

Lockdowns will never end. Another virus will come along and it will start all over again. People need to rise up, like they have in Italy 🇮🇹 for example,and demand their freedoms back.
This absolutely
Notanotherteenmovie1 · 21/01/2021 19:44

I heard this tonight too and it honestly made me question what the point was. This is no life. Why are we waiting for a specific day when the Government tells us we are 'allowed ' to see people?

faerin · 21/01/2021 19:45

I wonder how many people would actually support lockdown until summer. Would people really tolerate this much? I'm not in support of this at all.

Frazzled2207 · 21/01/2021 19:48

I can well believe that some restrictions will still be in play in May, and probably later.
Doesn't mean that we are basically under house arrest until May.
I suspect there will be a lot of pressure to open more shops and outdoor sport etc by the end of next month.

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 21/01/2021 19:48

I actually would rather not live than live like this for the whole year.

In my mind not ruling something out is not the same as saying it will definitely happen.

Boris doesn't know anything more than me or you with what's going to happen over the next few weeks and months in regards to the figures. There may be more strains/mutations yet there may not be. Cases may continue to go down (which should be followed by hospitalisations and then deaths) or they may go back up again.

If he was to turn round and say that they will lift some restrictions in March for example, but then another wave came so he couldn't then he'd be vilified for doing yet another u-turn.

From what I can gather is he said he can't rule it out, which is not the same as saying lockdown is staying in its current format until Summer. Currently cases are coming down and I did hear that hospitalisations were just on the start of possibly easing. Deaths should follow in the next few weeks. If that keeps continuing then surely the government will want to open some things up to get the economy going again. There is just no guarantees that its going to keep in the same direction it is currently in.

TheRaccoon · 21/01/2021 19:50

I’d actually prefer that he refused to confirm when lockdown will have ended by, he won’t know at this point anyway.

False hope has caused me and others a lot of stress over the past year, being told we can do something and then having it taken away is truly shit.

I’m hopeful that this current lockdown will start easing by end of March and we will then move into tiers with 2 week reviews like we had last time. Warmer months will help to keep infections down and then we just have to hope the government manage to learn some lessons from last year so we don’t get stuck into another cycle of lockdowns from autumn onwards.

I personally wouldn’t be sticking to the rules if a full lockdown is in place until May/June, I will go completely insane.

This!

He hasn't said we will be in lockdown until the summer, just that he can't rule it out. If he said, once again, this will all be over by x date he would get hammered in the press if for any reason that didn't happen.

I suspect there will be restrictions going into the summer, but that doesn't mean full lockdown, they need to ease things gradually

itsgettingweird · 21/01/2021 19:53

Refuses to say it won't happen is not the same as it will happen.

They've been accused time and time about over pro,Isiah and under delivering.

They've finally stopped.

Hairwizard · 21/01/2021 19:54

@Woofbloodywoof

Lots of businesses opening despite orders to close. Restaurants cafes etc

RosesAndHellebores · 21/01/2021 19:58

I think when the daily deaths come down and next week will look better than this shoots of optimism will appear. Let's not forget that once the most vulnerable are vaccinated the emphasis will shift to death rates in the under 55's which although utterly tragic are comparatively minimal. Not sure when but I think it will be an incremental lift:

Primaries
Secondaries
Universities
Gyms
Non essential shops
Restaurants
Hotels
Pubs
Sporting events

and riots happen in summer so they will be mindful of that

Nunoftheother · 21/01/2021 19:58

It's been reported on BBC We will never have our civil rights and freedoms back.
Don't be ridiculous.

Ffs.
SummerHouse · 21/01/2021 19:59

Let's just do today. Can you do that? That's all that's needed for now. Plenty of people told me to forget having a holiday last year. Well I had two. And they were great. But I also had days of crippling anxiety. Now back from the brink I am stronger knowing they will pass. When I am feeling like that I ask myself if I can get through today. Always yes. Always a better tomorrow.

Nunoftheother · 21/01/2021 20:00

@Beaniecats - snap! Grin

Don't be so dramatic and irresponsible.
AuntieStella · 21/01/2021 20:00

There's a difference between refusing to confirm a date - any date - and it being likely to come to pass.

Catastrophising now isn't going to help anything - just as expecting politicians to have crystal balls is futile.

Right now, lockdown is taking the edge of the second wave (though it will be some weeks before this takes the pressure off the NHS, assuming new infections continue to fall)

And we're making good progress through the first 4 priorities for vaccination.

So there is hope.

And I've found it really helps to live a bit more in the present, and to live as well as I can right now. Tough days from time to time, hell yes. But I try not to dwell there, because all it does is add misery based on something that hasn't even happened yet

Nunoftheother · 21/01/2021 20:01

Oops, meant @ilovesooty. Blush

ilovesooty · 21/01/2021 20:01

@StealthPolarBear

I'm glad he's refusing to make promises he maybe can't keep. He's refusing to rule it out, quite right, this is an ever changing situation, as Christmas showed.
I loathe Johnson but I absolutely agree with you.
Silvergreen · 21/01/2021 20:04

Bravest thing Johnson has done. He's obviously learning from his mistakes. It'll be interesting to see how he handles his backbenchers. I think things will look much better by the end of March and we'll be back into the tiered approach.

Splodgetastic · 21/01/2021 20:14

They should at least get rid of the stupid once a day exercise guidance

FTMF30 · 21/01/2021 20:17

I'm holding out until around March. I fully understand that BJ can't give a definite answer for ending or even easing lockdown, but I won't continue to live such a restricted life. I will visit family and friends by then.

Lemons1571 · 21/01/2021 20:19

The article is a contradiction though isn’t it? All that “restrictions despite a drop in cases” stuff. The cases are dropping because of the restrictions! It’s not like the virus is suddenly less contagious.

Also remember this is the man who said he wouldn’t release lockdown 1 until we were certain we wouldn’t get a second peak Hmm
