@mumlurker

Ending lockdown is not the answer - people who are suicidal are not suddenly going to be able to access better services if thousands and thousands are dying daily from covid and hospitals are over-run. As I said before, covid has exacerbated a pre-existing problem. Lockdown has not caused mental health issues in the majority of cases. And lockdown and covid 19 are not the same thing.
Speaking solely for myself here as someone with pre-existing mental illness who has subsequntly become suicidal due to lockdowns, I can tell you, ending lockdown would absolutely help.

I don't need access to mental health services. What I desperately need is legal access to be with my family, my friends, my loved ones. Keeping people cooped up like this is crazy-making, even for people without pre-existing mental illness.

enjoyingscience · 21/01/2021 20:49

I'm so sorry OP, and to everyone who has lost people. I get so angry at the 'suck it up' mob, who just expect everyone to manage whatever shitness this pandemic throws at them. No understanding that this has actually broken people, irreparably, and the longer it goes on the more who break. Empathy is in very short supply.

My mums partner has been sectioned - covid tipped his existing anxiety into a full blown breakdown. It doesn't look like he'll ever be the same again. All their plans out the window forever, not just for now.

faerin · 21/01/2021 20:50

I'm so sorry OP. My heart goes out to you so much. There needs to be serious investigation into the handling of covid.

LaMarschallin · 21/01/2021 20:51

@Neversleepingever

What is msm?

Mainstream media (as opposed to social media), I think.

Inkpaperstars · 21/01/2021 20:52

Covid19 isn’t killing healthy people in their teens-50s. It is depression.

Covid does kill healthy people under 50, but also by healthy you presumably mean without any underlying condition? Many who have an underlying condition still are well in everyday life and have decades of life expectancy? If that isn’t enough for you then surely the same applies to those who commit suicide due to the impact of the pandemic...they were depressed which is not ‘healthy’, they had mental vulnerability as an underlying condition. I do not see that as making them or the need to keep them well any less important, but it is basically the same as the attitude many take towards the physically vulnerable.

Also, the impact on our daily lives including economic is not about a choice between lockdown and going on as normal even if the people you selectively deem ‘unhealthy’ die. Covid running riot would have an enormous impact on people’s lives and cause much depression and suicide that way. People would not be keeping jobs, keeping loved ones, getting treatment for other things, going to school etc. Not to mention the suicides that may come from long Covid.

It’s terrible that people are being so impacted and much more should be done to help them, and to make sure the right measures are taken at the right time to limit the impact of the virus....unfortunately in the UK we completely missed that boat when it mattered. But the impact of Covid on mental health is happening, whether through lockdown or through the virus itself and the societal impact of exponential growth. The key to avoiding both is the same...keep cases down....but as I say we have already missed too many chances there.

NothingIsWrong · 21/01/2021 20:52

I know of one this week as well. Just a fucking tragic waste of life. I am closer to dark thoughts myself than I've ever been, but I have good support and will get through it. Not everyone does.

Inkpaperstars · 21/01/2021 20:53

Partly this is also bringing even further into focus the terrible state of mental health care in the UK, which predates Covid by a long way.

lovelemoncurd · 21/01/2021 20:54

I don't follow reality TV so wouldn't recognise him but sorry for your loss op. It's tragic💐

AliasGrape · 21/01/2021 20:55

Two people I know have killed themselves since the first lockdown began - teen daughter of a friend and a neighbour. In addition I know of 3 more - 2 men at DH’s work and a young friend of my niece.

It’s horrifying.

bjjgirl · 21/01/2021 20:55

So sorry for your loss, I too have recently lost colleagues to suicide and hear about people in my wider social circle daily.

I know no one who has died of COVID.

It is so difficult

Spiratedaway · 21/01/2021 20:57

@faerin me too I need to see my family and hug them I am truly devastated about mick

This is just so sad. This is going to be happening more and more. I'm so sad and angry at the same time
Thinking of you op Thanks

SirVixofVixHall · 21/01/2021 21:01

@BonnesVacances

I am sorry that lockdown is driving people to despair and for your friends OP. I wonder though if the answer is no lockdown and to have hospitals and health services overwhelmed and have even less capacity to deal with other medical emergencies.

I do think that a deadly or debiliating virus being left to transmit from person to person without any attempt at containment would have a greater impact on people's mental health, including those for whom lockdown is intolerable.

This. The alternative would be too traumatic for anyone.
Mum2jenny · 21/01/2021 21:08

So so sad for those affected by this. It’s a real social tragedy that the country has not put a better/ safer system into place.

southeastdweller · 21/01/2021 21:10

^This.

It's not like it has to be either lockdown or open up everything.

supersonicginandtonic · 21/01/2021 21:11

The mental health crisis is out of control and has been since the first lockdown. I work in substance misuse and many of my clients have mental health issues. I have had 8 suicides since April and also 3
Women beaten to death by their partners.

My sister tried to take her own life due to the isolation. I'm now caring for her 15 year old son.

It's honestly relentless.

Mum2jenny · 21/01/2021 21:27

Surely this cannot be allowed to continue. It is a total tragedy for families having to deal with this

Katie517 · 21/01/2021 21:52

It’s awful and the tip of a very big iceberg I think. The impression I get is the MSM and government simply do not care about the impacts of lockdowns they are blindsighted by covid and it’s disgusting. People are loosing everything they have ever worked for their is no hope for them to cling onto and add loneliness and isolation into the mix and it’s a recipe for disaster. We are approaching a year of restrictions it is too much and it has to end soon. Talk radio have been interviewing people the last few mornings about the impacts of lockdowns and it’s heartbreaking. The MSM need to stop filming crying nurses and take a look at the bigger picture.

@faerin

I can relate to this. I tell people I am struggling with my mental health (also have pre-existing conditions) and I just get told to see my GP. What will they do? Adjust my meds... which will do sweet FA because I am struggling due to being alone and isolated.
My old CPN would give me shit and kick my ass if I isolated myself and wallowed at home. Yet, now we are being forced to do that, and it is taking its toll. I have a friend who is offering to come see me next week and I will probably let her. She is that worried.

OP, so sorry to hear about your friends Flowers

Whitecup4 · 21/01/2021 22:54

Just seen about mick, terrible.

The aftermath of covid is devastating and not even started yet!

IthinkIm · 21/01/2021 23:01

Sorry for your loss OP.

My friend's DH died by suicide in June. His baby was 4 weeks old and his DD was 3.

Just awful for everyone.

Those on this thread who have said they would do the same, PLEASE PLEASE speak to someone in RL, don't do it.

Barnicus · 21/01/2021 23:04

Sorry for your loss op.

I hope you are alright too @justanotherneighinparadise Thanks

I do think the suicide rate is currently very high. I feel my local news and Facebook pages are full of stories (usually young men) who have gone missing then a short time later a body is found. I also know of 2 people who have found bodies. A young family member found someone who had committed suicide while out on a morning walk recently and had to call the police. Sad Similar to another poster a friend works in an industry that normally sees 3 or 4 suicides and month and said they are seeing around 10 or more now. It is just tragic. I realise this is only my own social circle but the rates do seem alarming high.

While I appreciate they are no where near the same death rates as covid I do think so many people are struggling in so many ways, left isolated with no support network and very stretched or limited services.

Barnicus · 21/01/2021 23:07

@XenoBitch please do see a friend if you feel it would help you. I hope you're ok
