A family member of mine works in ICU and after the first wave they said that the amount of attempted suicides they had on the unit was staggering. They are used to a certain amount, but it was over and beyond anything they had seen before. It makes you think about all those who never got to a hospital. Terribly sad.

Spiratedaway · 21/01/2021 19:35

I have been suicidal before and I think this is just knocking people over the edge ....

OP posts:
Indecisive12 · 21/01/2021 19:48

@Spiratedaway do you have someone supporting you through this?

Spiratedaway · 21/01/2021 19:53

It is in the news now

Suicide isn’t just because of covid. It hasn’t helped, I know.

jimmyhill · 21/01/2021 20:09

Threads of this sort don't help. ("MSM" Hmm)

The effects of being locked down for months on end, and having zero face to face contact with family/friends/partners is taking its toll on the population. Both my children have mental health issues. The support is not there. Ringing a helpline, or having cbt via text once every few weeks does not replace seeing someone face to face. If they just allowed long-term partners to bubble up (like they do in Scotland) that would be a huge help.
I really hope there is a way out of this soon.

Spiratedaway · 21/01/2021 20:12

It was mick norcross out of Towie !!! All over the news now ..

I am sorry for you OP. I didn't know him but I did used to watch TOWIE when it first started and he seemed like a decent guy ie a gent. He even made reference to his MH issues if i recall.

Fufumuji · 21/01/2021 20:22

I am so ducking angry no one mentions it it is all covid covid covid

There are about 5,000 suicides a year in England and Wales. Covid is killing more than that in 5 days at the moment (UK).
There is nothing as yet to suggest the suicide rate has increased much during the pandemic.

I am sorry for your loss. I would also like to keep some perspective as well.

I actually said if you read my other posts that covid is killing people of other factors too I know it is bad

What's there to get perspective about? Covid can kill people, people are killing themselves, and the numbers are irrelevant when you compare them because it's not a competition.
pinkhousesarebest · 21/01/2021 20:28

Two young boys from my dcs school killed themselves in December. Both threw themselves under a train. One 15, the other 17. Both beautiful. What is happening that our children feel so hopeless.

mumlurker · 21/01/2021 20:29

Ending lockdown is not the answer - people who are suicidal are not suddenly going to be able to access better services if thousands and thousands are dying daily from covid and hospitals are over-run. As I said before, covid has exacerbated a pre-existing problem. Lockdown has not caused mental health issues in the majority of cases. And lockdown and covid 19 are not the same thing.

randomer · 21/01/2021 20:34

I don't think Covid "makes" people suicidal, what drives it is of course complex and desperately sad.

Provision for any body with MH needs is absolutely pitiful. If people got excellent, on going support it would go some way to helping.

What is msm?

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/01/2021 20:39

If there was an easy quick way I’d do it in a heart beat.

Chosennonesneakymincepie · 21/01/2021 20:40

How awful Sad
We lost a very close friend last spring and at times we still can't quite believe it. I also know a woman who died this way in summer, leaving 3 small DC 😔
Our relatives lost a relative on the other side, aged 15 just before xmas... an utter tragedy 😔
It is very hard to process, it is unrelentingly confusing to accept, and all seems so senseless.
We are locking down the world to keep people alive and well. But some perceived healthy people can not live their life.

BonnesVacances · 21/01/2021 20:40

I am sorry that lockdown is driving people to despair and for your friends OP. I wonder though if the answer is no lockdown and to have hospitals and health services overwhelmed and have even less capacity to deal with other medical emergencies.

I do think that a deadly or debiliating virus being left to transmit from person to person without any attempt at containment would have a greater impact on people's mental health, including those for whom lockdown is intolerable.

Spiratedaway · 21/01/2021 20:42

How do you know lockdown has not caused it people are isolated , can't see their families !!!! It is fucking heartbreaking
OP posts:
mumlurker · 21/01/2021 20:45

I'm saying that more people will die if we end lockdown entirely than if we don't end it for a few more weeks/months. I'm also suggesting that for many people with mental health issues (I include myself here) their issues pre-date covid but may have been exacerbated by them.

mumlurker · 21/01/2021 20:46

*exacerbated by elements of lockdown. It's not like things were fine and dandy before covid came along.

mumlurker · 21/01/2021 20:46

I have lost family to covid, as have thousands of others. That is also heartbreaking.

blissfulllife · 21/01/2021 20:47

I am Mom of a 12 year old who's tried to commit suicide twice since April. Tomorrow will be the first appointment for camhs after all these months of waiting and waiting for help. Mental health services were stretched before COVID...now they've almost ground to a halt. My son lost his best friend to suicide in may , in his twenties. He'd reached out, but the help wasn't there. His gp didn't take him seriously and a telephone consultation wasn't good enough. Another friend who has a long history of depression was sectioned before Christmas.

Sorry for your loss OP. COVID is killing in more ways than just the virus itself that's for sure x
